  • 21/5/2024 AMMENDUM: I'm incorrect in saying this is Streaming from the 3DS, it simply isn't, it's sharing game files and saves to Citra remotely, which is still very useful for my use case but I don't want people thinking this is something it isn't.
    Have you ever wanted to play your 3DS on your PC or Home TV setup?
    Have you ever wanted to capture video and audio data on OBS?
    Have you ever just wanted to play a 3DS game using your own home controller?
    You used to have to buy expensive hardware mods, take apart your 3DS and solder those parts inside the device...
    Not anymore!!
    Now, thanks to Artic Base (Citra backwards) you can play your 3DS on your PC but the saves are on your 3DS, so just like the switch, once youre done, you can take your portable device and know your saves are up to date, because they never left the device!

    One thing to keep in mind is the fact that you won't have the DLC, probably if you install it on Citra those could work, or could also be on a game basis (tried it with Smash 4 and the DLC didn't show up on Citra, but on my 3DS after the test... no problems).

    One misconception I see alot of people getting caught on:
    This isn't streaming the visuals! The 3DS isnt actually running any of the code for the game, its your pc that does the heavy lifting!
    I'd say its less like a capture device and more like dumping a ROM to use on an emulator, but instead of dumping the whole game your 3ds is just sending over the essential data when needed, and your computer sends back save data so it stays on your 3ds.
    This means that there is NO latency! You'll only run into problems with loading screens being a bit longer, since thats when the data is sent from your 3DS to your computer, and you have to have a decent enough PC to run 3DS games. You may run into a few emulation bugs of course, but thats a given.

    • @PIXELPORTABLE
      @PIXELPORTABLE  2 месяца назад +11

      Yeah I think that's totally correct.
      Half of the problem is that I say it's streaming which provides the incorrect context.
      I'm just a guy on the internet and I don't know much about how artic base works (I've learnt a lot since I excitedly made this video).
      Citra does the heavy lifting and while it's great for me personally who likes to use my 3DS a lot it's not that useful for anyone who just emulates and hasn't got much interest in a physical 3DS.
      In their cases it's just better to emulate for them.
      Maybe I should make a clarification video that gives a simplification for how it works and who it's for.
      Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you took the time to engage with the community 😊

      So can you still use hd textures etc?

  • @Damariobros
    @Damariobros 2 месяца назад +28

    The advantage of hardware mods, however, is that you can still control and play using the actual 3DS, meaning zero input lag or latency, and you can use the actual touch screen. I feel it's easier to do that than to constantly switch between keyboard controls and mouse touch screen controls.

    • @PIXELPORTABLE
      @PIXELPORTABLE  2 месяца назад +5

      I don't think anyone would disagree that hardware mods are better, because they simply are. The problem is that they cost as much as the 3DS itself 😭

    • @Hario338
      @Hario338 2 месяца назад +6

      Small correction, there is no input lag or latency on artic base! Its not streaming the game in the traditional sense where the game runs on the 3ds and then the visuals are sent to the pc, its the GAME DATA that's sent to the PC, and the code and graphics are run directly on your pc through emulation.
      Think of it like dumping a game rom to play on emulator, but instead of having the whole game downloaded on your pc its only sending the essential data needed at that time, the only impact this has is on load times since thats when the 3DS is called to send over new data
      This does mean you need to have a decent pc to run the game, but given it allows for higher resolution and framerates I'd say its a fair trade off!

      Dude, articbase is not streaming video from the 3ds to the pc, the 3ds is streaming the files that citra needs to play the game on pc, it's very useful because there's no need to dump your games and savefile to play on your pc, but the game is running on your pc on an emulator, the point here is nintendo would never release an emulator to play your games even if you need to own the console and games to use it. And yes, there are plugins to stream new 3ds video to pc (the plugins run on o3ds too, but it's too laggy to call it playable) and it would've been a pretty good feature to have the possibility to watch your 3ds games on a bigger screen.

    Important question, would it be possible to still use the 3DS screen while Arctic Base is streaming to a secondary monitor?
    As I use Pixel Maker Studio to avoid screen burn-in that occurs on android devices; BUT, the top screen has an ever-so-slight yellow tinge that messes with previews.
    If Arctic Base can use Citra as a secondary display - on a properly calibrated monitor - that would be absolutely heavenly!

    • @PIXELPORTABLE
      @PIXELPORTABLE  2 месяца назад +1

      Unfortunately the 3DS has no functionality while it's sending the game data and save, this method is mostly just Citra.
      I do wonder if you could use a graphics tablet on your pc to emulate the touch screen.

    • @TheLunarDawn
      @TheLunarDawn 2 месяца назад

      That's indeed unfortunate, maybe it will be possible with a future iteration.
      Yeah a Cintiq is superior in every way, the 3DS is just more convenient for painting on the go versus any size of iPad...minus the FTP requirement to export files. Parts for maintenance are cheaper at the very least.
      The SD Card placement in the New3DS requiring disassembly, brings me to tears every time I want to move files to and from the PC. ;-;
      (Though I do remember being able to run a duo monitor display for Citra with the Android as a touchscreen, but still resulted in screen burn-in on the android itself.)

      2. Since this is mostly all Citra doing all the work you'll need a computer fast enough to use Citra. I do not know what the minim specs for Citra are unfortunately.

    Also GBA games will not stream because the 3DS has to switch out of 3DS mode and into GBA mode (which is different than DSi mode). Artic Base is weird. Why is the receiving endpoint hidden in an emulator? Other than that if it‘s more reliable than NTR CFW then‘s fine.
    However i bet that Artic Base doesn‘t run in DS mode. The Loopy Capture Card is btw already the better capture card because you can viably install it yourself. The Katsukity (according to Merki) needed you to remove a glob top with a CNC drill and then you had to solder directly to the 3DS processor.

    The PC needs to be powerfull to run this method? Because mine aren't so good to run emulation with Citra. I've been using NTR CFW to do this cuz the processing of the game still is on the 3DS itself...

    If it's through Citra, does that mean compatibility is as hit or miss as Citra? If so, its usability will vary by game, Citra is fairly shoddy with game compatibility.
    Either way I have a capture card so I don't need this, but it's a cool novelty nonetheless.

    • @PIXELPORTABLE
      @PIXELPORTABLE  2 месяца назад

      I'm not entirely sure, I guess it depends how Citra is handling the input from the 3DS, I would probably air to the side that you're likely right that it might have the same issues. I guess testing some of the problem games might be a good way to see this. Do you know any of the really bad games? I'd probably take a go at trying one to see if it's got the same issues or not as I think it's an interesting thought.

      @@PIXELPORTABLE Off the top of my head, Star Fox 64 3D seems perfect at first but the longer you play it the more broken it gets, the fire level in particular is unplayable. Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon also has a horrible stuttering problem when rendered at higher resolution regardless of PC specs. Tomodachi Life was plagued with bugs a few years ago but my understanding is that most of those have been fixed?

    If I have to run Citra, doesn't this mean the game is basically being emulated on it, and all you're doing is just giving your computer the game and save file or whatever?
    Meaning, you would need a good enough computer to even emulate 3DS, and at that point, you could just... emulate 3DS
    Can you use the 3DS as a controller for it, at least? Or would you also have to get another controller for your computer?

    • @PIXELPORTABLE
      @PIXELPORTABLE  2 месяца назад

      You're totally right that if your only goal was to just play a game on Cintra on a pc then this would be almost no value to you.
      Where this becomes more useful is if you're often taking your 3DS outside with you and want a way to kinda wirelessly switch dock it.
      It's got plenty of limitations.
      You can't use the 3DS as a controller.
      You can't use the menu, you can only play games.
      Apparently DLCs sometimes don't work, but it's not something I've tested.
      You'll need a computer able to run Cintra to use it.
      On the plus side, you get to keep your games and saves on the 3DS and need to do nothing after finishing your game, just pick it up and go outside to continue playing on the go.
      You get to stream your games and saves easily to OBS for content creation.
      You can play on a big screen, 4k 100 fps if your pc rig is good enough.
      It's not perfect by a long shot, but another way to easily capture data that's not an expensive capture card is a win for everyone in my eyes.

    So what exactly is happening here? The 3ds is beaming the rom to the pc and makes a temporary dump in citra? And once you stop playing it beams the savefile back to the 3ds and deletes the dump?

    • @PIXELPORTABLE
      @PIXELPORTABLE  2 месяца назад

      For the specifics I'd head over to PabloMK7's video or twitter and ask him.
      My guess (and it's a guess) is that the 3DS is beaming over the game and save data to Citra which is just using that in realtime to emulate the game. Nothing is dumped, he made that clear in a post.
      Like I say, all a guess, go ask the creator for the explanation.

    This is just emulation with extra steps. The only thing this does over "standard" emulation is that it pulls the game data and save from the 3ds over network. But the 3ds itself is otherwise doing nothing but acting as a file server. So rather than the emulator playing the rom from a file on your pc, it just pulls the time from the 3ds. So long story short, you get save file parity. That's it, that's the only difference. It is NOT streaming audio and video from the device, it is 100% local emulation on the PC and it's just reading the rom and save from the 3ds rather than from local pc files

    • @PIXELPORTABLE
      @PIXELPORTABLE  2 месяца назад +1

      That's true, you're not wrong that it's Citra doing all the work. It means I can play on my TV through my laptop, then when I'm done take the device outside with me complete with save.
      It's neat to have this option for me as I use my 3DS very often on the go, so being able to host the saves and emulate on a nice screen upscaled is a great solution for me as well as video capture without having to use checkpoint to mess with saves.
      Great to see any Innovation for 3DS iny eyes and a nice in-between for people who don't want to fully commit to Citra or fork out for a capture card.

    Also thanks for showing this app! Been using NTR for ages but this looks fantastic!

    So this is just emulation with extra step
    If i cant use home menu and online stuffs (pretendo) there is literally no point of using this method except sharing save files, that's neat

    • @PIXELPORTABLE

      Everyones use-case is diffrent and while it's not useful to you it certainly is to me, because I take my 3DS on the go, and use it often! So I don't want to keep backing up saves.
      For people not interested in the portability of the 3dS you're correct. For people that want to seamlessly use their 3DS on the go AND play on a big screen (much like a switch) then this is a great solution.
      It could be better for sure, but when the best solution is a lot of money on a capture card and then the skillsets to install it this has a pretty wide use-case for a lot of other people.
      Thanks for your comment all the same, and thanks for watching the video! I appreciate it 😁

      Unfortunaltly that won't work, Citra is doing all the hard work here still, so if PC can't handle running Citra then you won't be able to use this method sadly.

    So you are not using the console to play but rather the CITRA emulator as input !
    It's like using CITRA directly on your PC to play, difference is, the files are from the console
    Very interesting, but still not what I thought it' would be... but for capturing footage that's really cheap and easy !

    I thought this would allow you to play on your 3DS while streaming it to your PC for others to watch. If I was going to play the game on my PC I'd rather just have it running natively through the emulator instead.

    Wait isn’t citra shutting down?

    • @PIXELPORTABLE
      @PIXELPORTABLE  2 месяца назад +1

      Citra will no longer be further developed.
      But that doesn't mean access to the emulator is gone, in fact you can still find it online right now.
      This software uses a modified version of Citra designed to handle the wireless data input from the 3DS

  • @ERRORDownBad
    @ERRORDownBad 2 месяца назад +1

    Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the 3DS being a "portable console" though?

    • @PIXELPORTABLE
      @PIXELPORTABLE  2 месяца назад

      It just makes it the same as the switch. Easy to play a game on your nice monitor setup, then save, turn off and take it out with you to play the same save file on the go.
      Since it's wireless, and doesn't need a dock, it's technically MORE portable than the switch in some regards.
