Thank you Dr. Wilder for this series. This has disproven my previous jeuvenile thoughts that this campaign was solely the work of Sherman's and Hood's decisions alone, and decided only by an unstoppable and inevitable momentum from collapsing Southern logistics. This has increased my respect for the Union Corps Commanders of the Western Theater armies in 1864. If you ever find sources from Confederate headquarters discussions at this time - I would love to hear you read them. The ineptitude is not only Hood's, but even down to a divisional command level. Were many of the Brigadier generals and staff distracted by thoughts of their homes, or political rivalries, or knowing that they would lose the war?
Johnston was a better commander than Hood: at least he knew better the mess the confederate command and troops were and avoided hopeless pointless battles.
I think Hood was advanced 1 rank higher than he could actually handle. Johnston I think was a scapegoat, because he actually knew what was unfolding around him.

Man, this was something. The Rebels lost many men in the battle. Pointless sacrifice.
Sir please can you explain how Howard stayed in the army let alone in command of anything after Gettysburg?
More like after Chancellorsville? He wasn't amazing at Gettysburg but he was competent.
Especially following chancellorsville and Gettysburg! Turn my flank and rout my whole command Howard lol
