Shirley was one of the most underrated Organists of all time! Super lady! I wonder was Rhoda Scott related to her! She was another great female organist!l
Mrs. Stanley Turrentine is simply awesome. Rocky Mount, North Carolina's God child Harold Vick brings heat for the fire. I love this music. Grace and Peace to the children of destiny.
The timing of this writing is exactly the moment when B-3 organ took over after sax solo ended. Well..., what more I could say... This lady's got it. Being aware of all the other B-3 Hammond players, I deeply bow to this one: *Shirley Scott*. Hands down... ♫♫ ♥❀(~‿~)❀♥ ♫♫
Walking bass on the pedals without making it sound like mud. For those not accustomed to the Hammond: most jazz players use the pedalboard for the initial attack sound and texture; they don't, as a general rule, walk the lines with their feet (they do it with their left hand and accent with the pedalboard). This is amazing because she's capturing the sounds of both techniques with absolute clarity and precision. IN A SKIRT AND FLATS. One of the best to ever do it. Also check her registraitons on the upper manual; serious heavy stuff.
Thanks, I've always wondered how they managed the bass pedals. I notice a lot of fine B=3 players use bassists instead, and I can see why...most be hard to coordinate and swing, but Shirley Scott sure did it!!
Thank you for sharing Shirley Scott in this brilliant live performance. She was a dynamic musical artist. Shirley Scott could really create some magical moments with her playing.
I knew Harold personally in the mid eighties, he loved small groups with B3s and was able to deliver compelling performances like the one hinted at here although the recording quality is rough on this one. He was a sweet and thoughtful man and very much missed by many.
Fantastic Find. Thanks! Love this track. It has what is sadly missing with a lot of 21st century jazz - SOUL! (Yes, I'm an old git). I'm looking for the Don't Look Back album by Harold, but it's great to have the Shirley/Vick "One For Me". Fabulous 9 min version of Don't Look Back there!
Great clip Bob, thank you! That's AT (Arthur Taylor) on the drums in case anybody wonders. That tune is from the album "One for me", recorded in 1972 with Vick and Billy Higgins. Excellent album, now sadly out of print, but worth seeking out.
Just recently discovered Shirley... Trio classics vol. 1 and The well tempered organist are some of my daily listens at the time. Oh and shout out to Ron Carter below this comment haha.
Thank you so much for posting this rarity. There are not so many recordings with Shirley Scott playing her own bass line with bass pedals and left hand bass unisono. Superb´n groovy! "Don´t Look Back" was also recorded on her rare album "One For Me" on Strata East label.
@@piktip .. most Jazz-organists in history do it / did it this way: Wild Bill Davis, Jimmy Smith, Larry Young, Big John Patton, Don Patterson, Groove Holmes, Jimmy McGriff, Charles Earland, Jack McDuff, Dr. Lonnie Smith and...me, T.C. Pfeiler of course. Classic fullsize Hammonds (B3, C3, A100...) are not equipped with pedal sustain. With drawbar setting 808000000 on lower manual you can emulate smooth left-hand walking bass lines. With added "dry" pedal sounds you will get a special drive. Some organists installed aftermarket pedal-sustain or midi units later but I prefer the left hand & pedal system developed by my great friend, mentor & teacher Jazz-organ pioneer Wild Bill Davis in the 1940´s when he worked for Louis Jordan. Milt Buckner always played "dry" pedal bass lines only. The result was a funny bouncing style. He made a B3 sounding like a toy organ on many of his recordings. But that was his exceptional very own funny style because he was a funny character :-)
Really ?... *So what* (?). It seems that marriage did not hampered her artistic development by a bit. It might be speculation on my side but, I'm guessing, it was a blessing for her as an artist/musician to get out of the relationship that was not serving her higher goal ♫♫ ♥❀(~‿~)❀♥ ♫♫
Wow that must have been so exciting that you got a chance to see 3 jazz legendary masters in performing living color . I feel like I was born in the wrong era. I would have loved to have been able to see all of the jazz bands.
@@drlluc I love your correction: *CATALONIA (not spain)*. There must be a reason why Basques, Catalans etc... still insists on being called by their proper, national names Lol... Perhaps it was not meant for you to hear this one of a kind lady playing her B-3 Hammond. I could hear it just fine despite my advance age of (almost 66). There is this thing called *Karmic Justice*. It is one of those phenomenons that steps in whenever we are not able or, don't deserve to hear/experience something that we are not ready for. Give it some thoughts dude. Where you ready to listen to Ms. Scott playing jazz on her B-3 ??? if not..., not a big deal...
I love the way Shirley Scott swings, she sits at that B3 like she knows things are about to happen and she's in command.
A great talent. 👏🏾👏🏾
I'm ashamed I've never heard this before today.
This is mesmerizing! WOW!
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT Shirley SCOTT is that she really played for the music-made the others sound great too.
She was amazing with Lockjaw!
I totally agree with you!

I actually had the privilege of hearing Harold play in Rocky Mount one time circa '85. It was one of the best performances ever. Pure love.
Shirley is like a living Goddess of music....she was crazy talented. I am so amazed at what she is doing here both feet both hands.....incredible. N
Wow, that's a wild looking theater. Nice.
The fabulous Jazz Organist Shirley Scott, is working that Hammond B-3 overtime!!!

One of the best jazz vids on youtube, imo.
Major Shirley Scott fan. Great to see this.

That’s crazy talk, lol. No you are right, she plays that thing with a cold stone swing. Thanks for the background on her and the b-3

I played SOULIN' with Vick & Duke Pearson on my radio show in the 70's. they're solo's are considered classic's in my opinion.
Harold Vick Wow man dude is handling' business he has endless wind and ideas remind me of my mentor Michael Turré
good stuff, shame Harold was too quiet. I have come to him late...very underrated...

I just discovered Shirley Scott and I love her works. If you don't mind me asking, why she had to play bassline unison with left hand and foot?

Wow! I love her feel..............don't be funny guys I'm talking about the way she plays.
@Jay Sewall that “Cookin’ With Jaws And The Queen” album is a smoker!!!
Pity sound isn't normalized, but her performance in bass and left together plus all this dexterity are outrageous!!
El Palau de la Música Catalana, Barcelona!!! Uau!
Great tune! Anyone know where I could get the sheet music to it?

If this doesn't tickle your fancy, go see a doctor!! Marvellous!!
Along with Jimmy Smith, Shirley Scott was the best classic jazz organist! Love this song, too.
she ain't f'ng around now!!!!
buen gusto...

Ms. Scott was married to tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine for a spell.

@@fullmoon7192 I think you're dissing Mr. T, a fine tenor player, unnecessarily. But maybe all you've heard is his Creed Taylor produced stuff.
Does anyone know where we can access videos of other tunes from this great performance?

I saw them in Ronnie's :)

Is the drummer Art Taylor ?
I'm guessing it's Bernard Purdie.
One thing is for certain. He is playing the world redound make of drums 'Slingerland' which have been outsourced over seas somewhere.
Who gives a crap... It's Shirley who is the No.1 in this video. Haven't you get it yet ???
Not Purdie but Art Taylor
