Sydney’s Martin Place Station
Stuck in Time
Martin Place Station is a heritage listed station and is part of the Eastern Suburbs Railway.
It, along with Kings Cross, Edgecliff and Bondi Junction opened on 23rd June 1979.
This video features a walk through Martin Place station.
As you walk down the stairs from Martin Place into the station concourse it’s like stepping back into the late 70’s/early 80’s!

Hi Phil 👋 I watched this station being excavated while I was working in the Taxation office adjacent to the station. I was on the 7th floor looking down on it. The line runs directly below the Theatre Royal in King Street, and the theatre would shake each time a train passed below and eventually some sound proofing was installed beneath the tracks to absorb the sound and smooth out the ride. This is very noticeable on the train because the ride is smoother and quieter on this section of track. I am privileged to be able to say that I will have witnessed the opening of both Martin Place Stations in 45 years.
Hi Phil, great video. I remember when martin Place Station originally opened for the Eastern Suburbs Railway to Bondi Junction. It was quite close within walking distance to my workplace, which was in the former State Office Block building, that has since been demolished and apparently replaced by a hotel. It6 is hard to believe that was so long ago. I actually met Neville Wran on one occasion. He visited the State Office Block and entered my lift, as I headed up to my work office. From memory, the Premier's Department was on the 9th floor there. Back then, it was a real adventure riding trains on this line. I wonder if they will change the wall sign saying "Direct train to Bankstown" there once the Metro opens? See 10:19. Incidentally, when they first opened Martin Place Station, they had less lighting on the escalators, which made them appear much longer and more mysterious!!! Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
Martin Place is a beautiful slice of history but it does need a deep clean and some TLC to bring it back to its best!
Martin Place? Awesome!
Cheers :)
Martin Place Station is really cool
It sure is!
It has a lot of character
I love Martin Place station. The lighting, materials, colour scheme and signage are really cool. I hope it’s preserved as is for years to come.
Martin place station is awesome 💯💯💯👍👍
Still a fantastic station. Probably my favourite on the ESR - always loved the red theme colour. And I also love the huge lettering at each station on the ESR- it makes it so easy to identify where you are!
phil do you have any plans to visit canberra and take videos of their light rail? i think you will find it worthwhile. i love the design of their stations and trams. urbos 100 but slightly different instead including time that each stop will take to reach which i think is nice.
I use to work upstairs from Martin Place at one of the banks for almost 23 years. When I was working there, the shop at the corner of Philip St South stairs was a takeaway for the whole time I worked there. They knew my order depending what time of day I was there. At the bottom of the 3 escalators to the left use to be public phones and seating and the shop (which is now closed next to the hairdressers) use to be a newsagent. Across from that next to the entrance to the arcade use to be a Photo Processing shop (next to the ticket windows). Times have definitely changed there.
Saw the news report, they said the brightly lit huge areas are suppose to make customers feel safe but i feel like having guards or police patrol the station would achieve the same thing lol. They might do that once or twice a year maybe though
Nice work Phil, can’t beat that German bakery at town hall, so 1979 first opened gone so quick 👍
Cheers mate!
Oooo i’ll have to try the bakery :)
Martin Place maybe stuck in time but it still looks good
10:23 those hoardings have come down and the seats are back, plus there a roller door with will lead to the metro platforms
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your comment, watching and your support! 😊
yoo I never went to martin place because uhh of my age. im also a trainvlogger so most of the time I only experienced the a set the b set and the tangara. btw, great video! i should subscribe :D
Hey Phil awesome work - will you do a video on the full time metro city testing (video on Trial Running)?
Hey mate, if i can find a spot to see the Metro trains testing on the new section then yes :)
Good to know they kept up the century-old tradition (and longer) of a VIP lunch to inaugurate the new line in 1979. I wonder if they still do it for the Metro lines?
I don’t think they’ll do it for the Metro lines unfortunately
It's interesting to note that at the time of opening, the escalators from the platform to the concourse were apparently the longest and steepest on the network and those metal domes between them were designed to prevent people using the area between the escalators as a slide - on the opening weekend, I watched some guy do just that and he came out worse for wear at the bottom.
DO A TOUR OF THE MLC CENTRE FOOD COURT!!!!!!!!! One of the best places for lunch in Sydney (during the week)....
I could do that :)
@@sydneytrainsvlogs If you do it, great. If you don't, you're a douche.
That takes me back.
@@sydneytrainsvlogs yeah. I'm quite fascinated by the food courts in Sydney. They're all
Open on weekdays from like 10-3pm so not the usual 9/10-5:30pm time and they're super busy for the office staff lunch rush then dead. And they're like 15 of them and basically all
Closed on weekends. And they somehow survive.
Hope they never change it!
Oh and FIRST😂
I really hope they leave it as is :)

Martin Place station is heritage-listed, so they wont change it anytime soon. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Place_railway_station#Heritage_listing
Okay. On those platforms, in the wall that you see at the opposite end of your journey down the escalator, there will be a connection to the new metro line. I still find it unbelievable. I've touched that previous end-wall with the palm of my hand. Mining is an incredible job. (9:42)
Used to go there all the time to go to work or meet up with my then gf (now ex) in the mid 2000's to 2015 before I moved interstate. Hasn't changed much whenever I have been back.
And like the new profile picture!
Hey Phil awesome video
Hey mate!
Thank you :)
Martin place railway station was out of date from the moment it opened- loud screeching trains, massive gaps between platform and train, not much space for commuters to safely stand and wait esp in peak hour. Hard to believe this opened the same year as the hong kong mtr!
However, martin place metro will be so much better and befitting of sydney’s status as a global city
I feel like changing into polyester flares whenever I go there
Nice
Edge cliff is stuck in time too. Has its eastern suburbs line phone booth section still intact with 3 payphones still available. But if you turn around go into the little arcade there is another payphone. And if you exit that arcade there is another across the road. And up until 2015 there was two on the platform.
Also that photo is only available here because it's an old advertising board for when APN outdoor used to hold the contract for large concourse advertising. The billboards barcode is still on the side.
Edgecliff got quite a renovation a few years back. One of the escalators was moved to make way for an elevator/ lift, and the gate line was moved.
Much of the rest has heritage listings.
Paul has a detailed video on how the Metro will tie in to Martin Place station. Cheers
Cheers mate :)
I’ll have a look :)
The upper area originally had some commerce including a cafe. I like the station except the functionally useless, but elegant, curves in the platforms, result in some of the biggest gaps - both from the door across to the platform and down from the door to the platform, in Sydney. It can be quite scary getting off.
Not the 80's. This is the 70's for you.
Going to say something random, at least they renovated the toilets haha
It’s stepping into the 70s
Set of the Tangara was T69 and T70
Can anyone remember how the Hurstville trains used to run before ESR integrate it? Presume it would use Redfern 9&10, and central 21 and 23? I guess it would go around city circle but what service would it form thereafter?
Quite a few people seem to like the Eastern suburbs stations, but they've never really appealed to me. I think the tiled brutalist style is a bit depressing; like it was modelled on a 1960s Soviet apartment block. A few statues of Stalin and Lenin, and bit of Pet Shop Boys doing 'Go West! over the speakers would fit right in.
Much prefer the pragmatic functionality of the City Circle, the cathedral like architectural celebration and faint smell of curing concrete in new underground metro stations, the insanely wide platforms of the 'big sky' Western line stations, the alluring juxtaposition of new and old at Central and Parramatta, and the well-worn weatherboard splendour of the Bankstown line........ But to each according to their tastes, I guess...... Great tour.
Yay new vid
Yessss :)
When is it going to get the massive upgrade? What happened to the proposal ages ago it was meant to be huge. The artist impression on the news looked absolutely enormous, basically a multilevel shopping mall. This is depressing.
ur thinking about the new Martin Place metro station nearing completion that will have shops
Why was that guy that brushed past you on the escalator around the 8:00 mark so desperate to be in a hurry to get on the platform?
The train didn’t come for 5 minutes in his direction and once he reached the platform, he just strolled straight to the seat in a casual way.
Seems like he was unnecessarily hurrying.
Compared to the Melbourne City Loop stations constructed at about the same time the ones on the Eastern Suburbs Railway were pretty average really. If only the had done something better than threading it through Town Hall which overloaded that station and made it confusing as hell with 3 lines split over 3 levels and 2 islands plus 1 side platform.
Town Hall has 2 unused platforms at the time, so they chose to send it through Town Hall to save money probally.
@@ukraineball953 sure it was absolutely done that way save money, the project was an absolute financial and project management disaster through and through. But was that a good choice?
Obligatory "Melbourne is better" comment: ✔
@@owyman not for public transport it isn't, that's for sure.
@@kyletopfer7818 nor for anything else apparently, if the ubiquitous "Melbourne is better" comments are anything to go by. While you're commenting don't forget to add "Melburnians are more modest".
also there is Lift to streer visible on ahead when you entered at station - ruclips.net/video/88Cq_kfs3go/видео.html
Martin Place? I Went there once and found a sign saying metro connection
There will be a Metro station there too :)
lol :)
:)
@@sydneytrainsvlogs ok btw just wish if hornsby had sydney metro coz thats my local stop
Should be noted that Exit 3 was rebuilt recently to be off Martin Place and integrated into a new building, similar to all the new Metro entrances.
That northern end doesnt get a huge amount of foot traffic unfortunately, hence the boarded up shops.
Hopefully the platform gets a spruce up (new floor tiling as its not original) and maybe more modern brighter lighting.
The concourse looks a lot better now they have removed the old box that contained ticket machines and PIDs, and instead hung the PIDs from the ceiling.
those stairs never moved they are in the same place as before and the lift is still in the middle of Martin Place because the developer of 60 Martin Place refused to have it moved over to their building
hey Phil do you know what month the metro expansion will open?
Heya! :)
I’m hearing June or July
Chatswood - Tallawong opening was only announced 3 wks in advance. I'd expect something similar.
Would think the target is June (coincides with 5th yr anniversary) but many things could still delay.
