Do ENVIRONMENTALISTS Actually Need to DITCH MEAT? | LIVEKINDLY

- Is it possible to be a meat-eating environmentalist? As the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned us, we have less than 10 years to mitigate climate catastrophe. The report called for “unprecedented changes” to all aspects of society to prevent warming beyond this level. Should ditching meat be part of this?
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the global livestock industries account for 7.1 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent per year, representing 14.5% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. It also notes that 26% of the world's arable land is used for livestock, not to mention that 33% of all cropland is dedicated to growing animal feed. Deforestation is a huge issue, as 1.5 soccer fields are cleared in the Amazon Rainforest every hour to make room for grazing cattle.
There is also the issue of water availability - raising animals for food uses 1/3 of our potable water supply. Yet, 700 million people across the globe suffer from water scarcity.
Ocean dead zones have been linked to livestock manure and agricultural run-off. As ocean temperatures rise, coral reefs are dying and the water is becoming more acidic as a result. Ocean acidification makes it harder for marine ecosystems to thrive.

Are you an environmentalist? What's your stance on eating meat?
They teach nothing to students about animal agriculture when studying to become a environmentalist. Very irresponsible or simply part of their agenda🤔
1) No meat. 2) Clean energy (EV's, solar, etc.). 3) Clean currency (Bitcoin). 4) Population (family planning, replacement rate only: 2 kids). Environmentalists are pretty good about #2 and #4 I think. Vegans are mostly for #1 and #2. We need to do all 4.
LIVEKINDLY
No human need to eat animal products for survival. Fallout benefits are improved health and help mitigate the changes which will cause the 6th mass extinction.
i went vegan for the animals, birds, fish and wildlife and obviously the planet benefits. where would we be without our mother the earth. mistreat her at your peril.
It makes the most sense ever that the cruelest industry also will ultimately destroy everything we love unless it is put down for good. It will destroy us, and life will begin again without us. Although, I think this revolution is happening for real and in time.
It just makes no sense when an environmentalist who's completely capable of going vegan just...doesn't.
It's because they're addicted to animal products.
Conveniencia.
Easy to be a virtue signaler, more difficult to actually do something.
100%
Agreed.
No, it's not. People ignore the connection between eating animals and the environment, but it's fact.
The connection is often overlooked.
I was that person for years ago. It's how we programmed to accept consuming normal thing thanks to media, education and government. But many of us start thinking for ourselves and search for truth. Being vegan is a very responsible and important lifestyle to adopt. It only means you are you better version of yourself then yesterday.
Even if they are eating nothing but wild game meat from wild animals that have died from natural causes?
how would that happen, exactly? A man strolls in the woods every day, looking for an animal on the ground that freshly died of natural causes, no maggots yet, no other animals have feasted on? Then picks it up, takes it home and cooks it and serves it to his family? C;'mon, Seriously
@@LiveLifeLori I have read and heard of people doing just that. It takes a bit of time and patience at times but it can be and is being done by a small percentage of the population.
You can't be an environmentalist and eat meat, period!
By the same logic, you can add many many items to the list of things that real environmentalists could/should/would never do. And not just the obvious ones.
I'm a vegan. I don't fly. I don't travel a lot. I don't own a car. I studied ecology.
But there are still things I do that are not environmental friendly.
Using the internet for example. Buying products that are packaged in plastic. Buying fruits that don't grow in my region or season. ...
Perfect environmentalists don't exists. And becoming vegan is just one step into the right direction. It's not enough, although it is certainly important. And it is not the only step. I would argue that a zero waste non-vegan is as much a good environmentalist as a vegan that don't care about their plastic foodprint.
And a person that donates millions for the environment is probably the most effective environmentalists no matter what he does in his private life.
@@Chiungalla79 i agree with most of your arguments but not the last one..
One who donates .. so also be conscious about what he is actually doing.. doing it responsibly or not..
Also.. it's not just about the so called 'perfection'.. but we wanna get as much result as possible.. and quilting meat is actually good for the environment and the animals..
You wouldn't wanna be treated the way those innocent beings are being treated..so yeah.. quitting meat or AT LEAST reducing one's meat intake is very important..
I push myself to the limits.. in terms of reducing my carbon, water , plastic footprint.. on earth..
I aspire to make good impact on people as well as on earth..
So yeah.. i too practice veganism , minimalism, zero waste (as much as possible)etc..
@@science-y9209
Okay, I should have phrased that differently. What I actually wanted to say is the following:
A person that donates millions for the environment is more effective than a person that just turns zero-waste vegan.
He would of cause be even more effective if he would turn vegan on top of that.
Although this might not be true. He might alienate people by becoming a vegan. He might be conceived as too extreme and loosing influence in the process.
Leonardos message today is "I`m not even a vegan, and I think this is a really good idea." and this probably has a more severe impact as "I`m another one of those extreme vegans, and I think this is a really good idea."
If he sits at a steak dinner with some big bosses from the meat industry and convinces them that they could really make even more money with less meat and more vegan fake-meat I would totally support that. Although I couldn`t and wouldn`t do it myself at this point.
@@Chiungalla79 what's the use of that donation .. if the environment can't make use of em.. will that donation inspire millions to reduce their meat consumption or buy responsibly. .
What's the use of all the money.. I ask..
You think it would fund institutions and environmentalists. .. but what change will they be able to make if we ..won't change..
I know you are a good hearted person.. but they should change themselves too.. with a positive attitude.. it shouldn't be that big of a deal..cuz if they are concerned.. they should do something about it..
And who knows where that money ends up ...
I don't intend to spread hatred.. may be it's not a positive way of perceiving things.. but that's what the truth is..
Also, I'm no millionaire, I'm just a pre med student.. so i certainly can't donate money.. but i can take small steps.. and every bit counts..

BRAVO !
I personally think we need to stop using the label vegan. I know it is short and easy, but the stigma is huge. We either need a new word, or the full, Whole food plant based.
@@williamcrowley5506 , what a load of shit - the word is VEGAN and it's GREAT , it's a no nonsense word that is not ambiguous , those who want us to use terms like whole foods or plant based are looking to water down the ethics and morals involved with VEGANISM , and will quickly start to add animal product or whatever is at their DISPOSAL into the foods they sell to non-discriminating vegetarians , at high prices ! DON'T BUY ANYTHING THAT SAYS PLANT BASED , BE PROUD TO BE A VEGAN , even if you are humble about it !
@@williamcrowley5506 there is no stigma just push back from meat/dairy/egg/fish producing industries who are destroyers of the planet. i have seen plant based used in articles where they also include animal flesh in the diet. so that is actually misused and ambiguous.
Ganpignanus .Gianni I disagree. It isn’t the industries that we run into on social media, it is people. There have been plenty of overzealous vegans over the past few decades that have aided that stigma, but it is no longer just about ethics, that reason never swayed me and it won’t sway a majority, this is about the planet and health.
Again, I said it was my opinion earlier. These are my observations having went whole food plant based 2 years ago at 45.
We had the "just" egg for breakfast, it's really good. We scrambled it with veggies!
How can you be an environmentalist when you refuse to change your own personal habits that is one of the leading causes of climate change? That's like a thief pleading with other thieves to change whilst they're robbing their pockets.
There's a saying .. don't overestimate yourself to change the world and never underestimate yourself to change your habits.. and one day you r habits will certainly change thw world..

Vegan for 12 years! Thank you for creating and sharing educational updates material that I can pass along to my patients, family and friends! Wonderful! Keep the videos coming!
I came to this part of my life after using food including animal products for escapism, to comfort sadness, and to not focus on being lonely. Unfortunately there are people who still rely on it as their only minor comfort. When I was ready and willing to change to full veganism, because I remedied all those broken aspects of me with seeking a personal fulfillment in achievement and productive socializing, the transition was voluntary and enjoyed. I don't think there would be a positive response to forcing people. It worked for me because the supermarket options for alternatives to meat, egg, and dairy became just affordable enough to enjoy daily. I say keep the system the same more or less, tighter rules for pollution policy, but heap on the alternatives at the grocery, fast food, and restaurants and really make the barrier to have other fake meats plentiful and cheap, and people will naturally switch because its just cheaper and just as good. Prohibition or cost increases will just make people feel controlled and mad.
I do love this channel is great fantastic fabulous educational for everybody to learn about this thank you

Yes, I am considered to be an environmentalist and also I combine this with being on a deeply spiritual path recognizing the sentient nature of animals and the consciousness within all of Life. I am a long time vegan an was vegetarian for decades before this, before the truth of the dairy industry was revealed. I feel that all environmentalists, truthfully, all people are being called to return to a plant based diet for the health of the planet and the freedom of Life. In my view, we cannot truly have world peace until we stop killing people and animals and treat all life with reverence and deep respect.
Thank you, kind, wise one.

Most food waste is found in growing plants. I can know it because we have been farming vegetables all of our lives. And yet I firmly believe we cannot live without eating animal food.
I went vegetarian for the planet, I got curious about veganism for my health, however it was the positive environmental impact of being vegan that made me give up the eggs, cheese, and milk.
I am an environmentalist (vegan) and believe that sticking with meat and vegetarianism except on very low level / subsistence (grey zone areas where impacts might be equal to or even less than average vegan), cannot be justified.

carbon is NOT the environmental disaster as claimed. trees and plants NEED carbon as food to survive. if we dropped carbon in the atmosphere down below 180 PPM (it's 350 PPM now)the trees would die in 2 years. dinosaurs existed in + 20 times the current carbon levels and hotter climate where there was NO polar ice caps!,the increased plant life supported +90 greater biodiversity than in the present-which is 11,000 yrs after the last ice age-which DID cause a mass extinction. However, suffering of animals IS a humanist issue .

livestock is responsible for 65 percent of all emissions of nitrous oxide-a greenhouse gas that has 296 times more destructive than carbon dioxide and which stays in the atmosphere for 150 years.{1}
In a similar vein, the focus is always almost exclusively on carbon dioxide but methane is 25-100 times more destructive than carbon dioxide [4] and has 86 times the global warming power {5}
Put in comparative terms, your average car produces 3-12 kg/day of carbon dioxide. [2][3] to clear rainforest to produce beef for one hamburger produces 75 kg of carbon dioxide.[2] Eating one pound of hamburger does the same damage as driving your car for more than three weeks.
If we completely stopped all use of gas, oil, fuel, electricity et cetera, and never used them ever again, we would still exceed our carbon equivalent greenhouse gas emissions of 565 gigatons by the year 2030 just with the impact of livestock alone. [6][7]

Somebody should ask the climate change girl Greta why she doesn't speak up about this more? surely this has more of an impact than complaining about flying on airplanes
She does talk about it, but she thinks it is a small decision for each individual to stop eating meat. She's trying to get to the government to change their laws instead, which would impact for example the meatindustry in a different way than just simply by people's individual decisions.
If we leave it up to only individual people to make the right choices when it comes to meat, oil, cloth production etc than we won't change enough in time. This does take governments and big organisations changing their ways so norms have no choice but to change in this direction.
Right now many don't have what it takes to go vegan as an individual. Many poor people don't have the money for vegetabels and for them it is unfortunetly probably just not possible to go vegan. Maybe they can have like a vegan day a week, but those with a really tight economy might have to choose between a vegan lifestyle or keeping their current one and having enough money for new shoes which they desperately need.
I understand the reasons for beeing vegan and I myself is mostly vegan by this point (I became vegetarian about a year ago and it's a bit of a process) but I know that some people just can't go vegan and these people shouldn't be villainized for not being able to. Instead I think their options should be increased by people with the power to make those decisions, like the government.

First off, obviously being truly Vegan is the best stance for proof of concept in environmental issues. That said, every single decision moving toward this Ideal is helpful. If we encourage individuals to explore the issues, while bolstering their every positive move, we both make environmental gains, and allow others to feel self-empowered, rather than forced. They are enmeshed in hegemony that openly tells them lies about health, masculinity, and the ability of individual actions to have effects. Vegans who shrilly condemn are the ones who make it harder for us who don't to get open minded folks to hear our shared message. Truth is truth, but people are emotional animals. Telling someone forcefully that their smoking will kill them, showing them disease pics against their will isn't as effective as pointing out the things they will miss out on if they die, and worse, the effects their habit has on their loved ones. Of course, different tactics work differently on individuals, but I am going from what converted me, and my experiences gently converting Progressive friends and family, dubious at first about costs, difficulty in meal prep, worries about how others will react, etc.. People normally think inside out, not outside in. Themselves, family, friends, locality, nation, then world, etc., versus the opposite. Understanding how people are motivated and working within our species' psychological makeup is the fastest way to total global veganism. So yes, someone **can** be an environmentalist while not Vegan, doing their part in their own ways, adding into helping. Are they the "best" sort of environmentalists? No. But none of us is practicing Ahimsa, now are we? Fabric softeners, plastic bag lubricant, vehicle tires, and just driving, all involve suffering we hate, yet often tolerate within ourselves, "until we can change things." Namaste, and Blessed Be.
