      I think the similar price suggestion may depend on the discounts available. My Ze40 was £6200 off list after haggling. I suspect they will keep the list price the same but offer less money off (initially anyway). Hope you manage to get one, great little cars.

    • @robsmith1a
      @robsmith1a 5 лет назад +2

      @Charles-A Rovira If you don't like haggling just use a site like CarWow or similar, they effectively do it for you. There was no way I'd pay nearly £25k for a Zoe.. I don't see how enjoying negotiating is a moral thing. I am sure a lot of car dealers rely on people finding haggling uncomfortable in order to charge them more. For some reason with a Renault the list price is often far more than they are willing to sell the car for (my previous car was a Renault and I found a new one at a car supermarket at a similar discount), this is one reason why Renault always look so bad on tables of depreciation, many people pay less than the list price in the first place so they appear to lose a lot in the first year.

    I'm a city commuter and currently a diesel driver who makes the occasional jolly jaunt across the UK once in a while. The old R110 1st gen 40kWh Zoe with only 22kW charging was a deal breaker, but I could happily cope with 50kW DC fast charge for the long trips and 22kW AC for the inner city top-ups, assuming it actually stays close to those rates for a significant proportion of time. The increase to 52kWh battery is an added bonus. Bang for buck, I don't think there's likely to be a better car our there until Dacia (the Renault budget brand) comes along in a few years time. I'm saving up as we speak!

      Go for a used car instead, aim at a car that goes 40mpg at least, probably a diesel, let those with a bigger budget buy brand new cars, waiting for those new cars to lose in value, those that still run after 100000 km bone stock are the one to aim for.
      Trust me, let the market sort out the winners and losers of the electric "arms race" and then make your choice.

    I don't blame Renault at all for making the new zoe quick charge at "only" 50 kW.
    You see, batteries are not electricity storage devices. They are chemical energy storage devices, so charging a battery takes an energy conversion, and discharging a battery takes another reversed energy conversion, with both these conversions having power limits.
    Taking that into account, it is more cost effective to design a battery that charges at the same or lower power than the maximum continuous power of the motor(s) being used in the car. Teslas and Audis charge faster because their batteries are also prepared to give a lot of power to the motors.

    • @johnkeepin7527
      @johnkeepin7527 5 лет назад

      It may also be that there is more thermal loss at higher charging speeds. Also, many users are likely to use a.c. domestic charging, typically limited to 7.5 kW (32A at typical European single phase supplies). Often done overnight, especially if one has a deal with lower pricing at certain times of day, e.g. “night rate”.

    Have a couple of ZOE's at work. They are a bit zippy, have nice interior/tech and great for traffic. But keep in mind they aren't a good option for tall people unless only your torso is tall.
    While the head room is good, the leg room is not. My knees are more or less stuck between the wheel and the door and wheel and infotainment cluster for my other leg.
    So steering can be a bit annoying at times. But for short people, I'm sure the ZOE will get the job done nicely. It's quite popular with my co-workers, at least the younger generations.
    I'm so glad I don't have to go to the other side of town to refill gas while working. Just plug it in at the end of my shift. 268 km range is more than enough for a car used mainly in town.

    Another super-informative video! I tend to agree with all the points you made, especially the ‘low’ 50kW charge speed. In this new world of 200-mile, 50-60kWh battery packs, doing longer journeys is going to be feasible. But at that rate of charge, it’s still going to be relatively inconvenient, and I wonder how many lay-consumers won’t appreciate this subtlety until they’re plugged in at a rapid charger wondering why it’s going to take an hour to refill... but you’re right (and Renault themselves have said this): the Zoe is a city car, maybe even a second car. That extra capacity is there so if you don’t have charging facilities at home, your refilling stops will be fewer and further in between. I like this focus on a specific demographic and, although sadly not for me, I t definitely makes sense. Thanks again! Great round-up, superb knowledge and informed commentary. Top video!

      I dunno. This Zoe would get you from London to Manchester on a single charge. That feels like a pretty reasonable long-ish distance to drive. I wonder what % of car journeys in the UK are longer than that? Recharge overnight and you could drive back on another single charge the next day.

  • @Chilukar

    The zoe seems like a nice little car, but my biggest problem with it is the battery hire. Over 5 years average motoring in the UK that adds £5,400 ($6,800) to the apples to apples price, as well as drastically reducing its resale value.
    To put it another way it is £14/month more expensive than filling an average car with enough petrol to do the average mileage and that doesn't include electric costs. It takes the biggest advantage of evs and turns it into a negative.
    To me it smells of gouging those of us who can't afford an expensive ev.

    I’m not having that stuff about it not being a long range vehicle. It’s a car. People who buy a smaller car might rarely do long trips, but you’re likely going to do one at some point. If I lived in a city, I would ride my Brompton everywhere. They needed to go to 100kw CCS to keep up with Hyundai, Kia, VW, Peugeot, Opel etc.
    Yes, it’s an improvement but the fact here is that they haven’t taken advantage of their early lead in EVs. They haven’t done anything exciting. Just the bare minimum. That’s the reality of it.

      It keeps up with the Hyundai IONIQ face lift, which now has slower charging and less range for more money. It has almost the same range as a 64kWh Kona, with equally unpleasant rear seats, but the ZOE comes for half the price and twice the boot space. The smaller Kona still costs more, has less space, less range and charges slower. I can‘t quite see where it is not up to its game. Where‘s your problem with this car on a long trip? It‘s 700km from my home in the Swiss Alps to the mediterranean in south France. I could easily do that with one charging stop. Renault say it takes 70min on a 50kW charger to top it off. Mate, 350km is the better part of four hours of driving. By that time I am ready for a walk, some food, a couple of fags and my family even more so. It’s not a Range Rover, mate, you‘ll be glad to charge it every few hours.

      There’s just something about it that frustrates me. Just feels like they’re not trying that hard. But I guess they’re going to be selling it in higher volumes than everyone else right off the bat. So that would be significant.

      It's active battery cooling by fan forced air. Can be very powerfull and noisy if the batteries are hot.
      Not as efficient as the liquid Tesla's one but much more than Leaf's one.
      With this cooling we could charge a 22kWh battery at 43kW ! So with 55kWh battery pack at 50kW, twice less by Ah of battery.

    Recently bought a £100 cordless lawnmower with an 18v battery. What a revelation for convenience and ease of use a new battery however if required is nearly half the price of the mower. The Renault Zoe for my motoring needs is absolutely what I require as a retired person, but it is still too expensive compared to my nice little automatic petrol car. Couple that with renting a battery and this old git will not be trendsetting in my street yet. I'd go so far as to say when there is parity between petrol and electric cars I shall probably either be dead or surrendering my licence. Nice moves though and it is going in the right direction.
    I'm surprised that the motoring industry haven't collaborated to achieve a standard battery for smaller cars. Referring to the lawnmower you slide the battery in and out the front. I've often wondered if gas stations were converted they could have stocks of batteries on charge where a battery could be slid out the car on a fork and a fresh one pushed in.

      Hello Barry, Getting a second hand electric car is getting easier. I was at the recent fully charged show at Silverstone and there is a growing network of independent garages catering for any and all EVs. Additionally, there are cottage industries offering replacement battery packs. Note that an EV probably has a life of 500,000 miles and the battery will last as long - only with far less charge/range. The main consideration at present is if you have a private driveway to park on. This makes overnight charging possible and means you wake up every morning to the full range and pre-heated in winter - plus charged on economy 7 for pennies. Note also that maintenance on EVs is much much less than Petrol or diesel (and don't believe dealerships if they indicate otherwise). I hope you can get behind the wheel of an EV before surrendering your licence, they are glorified lawn mowers only minus the blades!!

Than you have to get it homologated as a unique case, which would allow your specific car to tow, but not the other Renault Zoe’s. And cost is easily over 2k€ if you manage to pass it the first trial, which is almost impossible in Belgium, first trial they always find something to fail your attempt, for example if you used a galvanized screw instead of a black one or something like that. That is also why I ordered factory installed tow bar on my golf, it is far less trouble to pass the yearly car inspection with that

Renault is trying to con people big time by ALLOWING them to "rent" the battery pack, which will basically add another 100 Euros to your monthly car payment. And from what I'm reading across the internet, the rental program is controversial and not well-received by most car buyers.
