Great interview. I’m a Mum with children raised in and left the faith. Hardest thing in the world is to have your life efforts completely rejected by your children who you’ve poured your life into. Sadly many families do judge you and even sadder shun you. We all rightly celebrate when a prodigal son comes home but as Catholics we need to do so much better in loving and supporting families whose child/children have gone astray while they are walking that road. This is what we aren’t prepared for when we raise our children in the faith.

Just reading this. I’m so sorry you are going through that pain and sorrier about the shunning. I think I’m shocked that you are being treated that way. I pray you find the Lord’s presence, grace, strength and guidance and a loving godly community ❤

@@CICMCB with some hindsight I’ve become more philosophical about the perceived shunning… I now wonder is it because people don’t know what to say or do so avoid you 🤷🏻 If this happens to someone you know treat them as you always would. If they wish to tell you more they will, if not then just being normal is the kindest thing for to do and a relief from the turmoil sometimes. I’m glad this came back up as even though circumstances have changed little Grace has changed us. X

Just a note on the AA comment. I'm a AA dude who lives the steps therefore, my life has meaning, fulfilment, peace etc etc. My life is all about doing Gods will, that's the whole idea of the AA program. The guys you mentioned kinda sound like what we call "dry drunks", guys who just turn up and expect to get the results without taken the action.
Kinda similar to the Catholics who go to mass, take communion but can't distinguish a holy day or a day ran on self . People who go to mass yet go home and swear, or kick the cat or get through the day on there own will.
Just a bit of feedback that might help you understand those two AA guys you met. Unfortunately, without the program they hadn't found God just yet.

I cannot thank you enough for this broadcast and everything involved in it I'm on my second day sober and struggling only because I'm in an environment where I'm very abused I've never considered myself an addict just a pothead, alcohol alcoholism is prevalent my family so I thought avoid being a drunk but for about 20 years I still actively practiced drinking here and there, and when covid came and booze could be delivered and I'm here isolated and potentially out of pot then came the return of vodka I thought I was just buying it to photograph the bottles and then when I cleared four bottles by myself I mean it took a few weeks but I was like wow I can't find my inner peace right now without a vice and it scared me, but I'm getting harassed in my neighborhood because I choose not to get vaccinated I'm isolated from my family over my faith I've cried so many tears that it's been the only thing to help me sleep or eat... And to get the support of a Catholic community I have to do it through the phone because believe you may it's not happening locally.. at least when it comes down to getting human contact or even a phone call to my own mom for 2 years just to offer her counseling or communion I've asked everyone it's really sad , but I very lucky to have Blessed Sacrament Adoration available 24 hours a day down the street from where I live right now but I signed my own eviction papers from my mother she's not in her right mind and I forgive her, but terrorize me to think whose hand she's in, I just want God to be back in her life full time, but the fact that my siblings turned against me and all her non-practicing neighbor friends have really chosen to gang up on me it's been super hard.... But when you made the comment about seeing Johnny Depp's Blow although I've used cocaine I realized after the first couple times I used it as my boss was providing it for us to keep busy at work tending bar I could see this could be easily be a problem and I was not interested in buying it, but I did once or twice and I hated myself for it, but I will never forget sitting in the movie theater ,watching Blow snorting it up my nose with some odd little sneak a toque and I'm not sure why I felt the need to do that and the guy provided it seemed seems to snort about a kilo through the whole damn movie I don't know how, I'm thinking about him right now and I'm praying for him and I hope that he's alive and well. And there's an embarrassing moment that I could have kept to myself... The devil loves an orifice he'll use whatever he can to get up inside you.

Excellent interview! So happy for John that he found the path that worked for him. No diss on him that the 12 steps didn't help much (or maybe it did a bit) but as soon as this podcast ended, a recent Bihop Barren video came up and he mentioned the 12 steps and how the acknowledgment of needing a higher power is so crucial. 🙂

From 1:39:50.... Identity! After you realize who you're inherently called to be, nothing else makes sense and sin feels like sin. That is no small thing and I am overjoyed for any and everyone who comes to that realization. Blessed be God!

What a beautiful story! And a great, honest discussion of 2 men :) Also, Angela is a beautiful wife, she's so awesome! That was powerful and I'm glad I could for a moment leave all the turmoils of the world and listen about God renewing someone's life. Even the small detail about the other inmate helping with the telephone was so uplifting. Thank you for that!

The strange irony, hearing that. How many times I have said this and how true it is. Concupiscence is an agonizing lure. Pray that The Lord, shall keep us each from sin. May Christ aid us in the increase of Virtues, and the diminishment of vices.

    Matt,
Your podcast is amazing dude. I met John 3 years ago through CMLA and have heard his story many times. But, in this setting, it provided him the comfort zone to go deeper. I hope to get to work with you some day through ministry. I direct a men's conference in the Diocese of Beaumont, Texas. John will be a presenter this coming August. Hopefully we can work you into 2023. John has my contact info.
