Haha. Regardless what’s in this video, I think it’s easy to underestimate many guitarist/bassists in the industry. But you’ve got to think about how much experience they have playing countless times in the studio and not to mention the ridiculous amount of shows they’ve played. Even someone like Pete has likely played way more bass than the vast majority of players out there.

@@jessebatdorff2221eh, probably better than someone playing a year. Haha. Now, I’ve always kinda hated FOB, but I will say in his defense, as far as I’m aware he is the main creative behind the band.
I’m pretty sure he writes most of the lyrics and a lot of the main strong structures, and also produces much of their stuff. There’s honestly a ton of really good song writers/producers that are actually pretty shit at playing any musical instruments(technical skill wise), but I don’t think it really matters. I’d always pick being a great song writer over being super technically proficient on an instrument.
Also, 99% of the audience does not give two shits if Pete Wentz is actually a good bass player. As long as it doesn’t take away from the show, his stage presence and performance is probably way way more important. I don’t know how many bands I’ve seen that are insanely talented musicians, but so overwhelmingly boring to watch live. I remember seeing Coheed and Cambria back in like 2014 at a fest my band was playing at. So we got to watch from side stage and see everything up close, and they were all pretty spotless as far as playing the songs, but my god was it one of the most boring performances of the night. They barely moved at all, and had almost zero stage presence. Their singer/guitarist(Claudio?), literally just stayed planted in front of the mic stand, and the only “performance” he did was to play the guitar behind his back. Granted I’m not a huge fan of their music either, but I’d rather watch someone like Pete and FOB doing their antics, than be bored to death by a band that is super technically proficient, but as lifeless as a dead fish.

He writes all of their complex lyrics and Patrick Stump handles most of the composition.

We need to stop to try and find arguments to justify why we are not successful. Music is awesome because the freedom to express yourself in different ways, I don’t think music should be based on “oh this guys or band is better than this one” or “wow what a complex and difficult riff they’re doing”. He is on tune, he plays right, he is a writer, and his presence works well with the band. And people feel great listening theirs songs.

So we really don’t need to be mad because “ he plays like a beginner”. If he is doing this, and works for he and his band… who cares? I understand that your content have a lot of irony but maybe the people who watch don’t catch that, especially the ones who don’t like this type of music.

We knew the answer to this 20 years ago. You don't have to be a virtuoso bassist but it baffles me that someone would be in a successful band for a couple of decades and have zero curiosity about his instrument or show any willingness to improve at it.

Pete Wentz used to play in Arma Angelus and a grindcore/metalcore band Racetraiter. I’m guessing the guy just doesn’t care anymore.

I love Fall Out Boy but bass is definitely not the main attraction for them. In most of their songs the bass is there to keep the beat and fill out the sound, it's not doing anything fancy. But that's ok, the songs are great without it. Pete plays what he needs to and even if his playing might not be anything special, he's also their front man and lyricist and he's phenomenal at those jobs.

He gets a pass, he writes all his band’s songs. There is a difference between a writer and a player. Players play to be good, writers play to support their song. You can be both, but you do have to be.
