The single best investment you made was the updated trolling motor. I was surprised watching your videos that you didn’t have that spot lock. I have a $3000 86 Ranger and the first thing I put on it was a Ultrex. Almost Doubled the price of my boat but so worth it. 😂

Another excellent video. I've been viewing and taking notes on your videos and they are terrific and my learning curve has skyrocketed. You do a great job in analyzing, explaining, and demonstrating your videos. I'm in the process of trying to figure out my electronics on a new boat I plan to buy. Your information is a tremendous help to me. I've been impressed with Wheeler's set up and you just showed me the sense in it. Thanks for the information and a job well done.
Need to add that to properly use live scope you should use lithium batteries. The system requires constant 12v power, if your lead acid/AGMs drop to low or are to high the system will shut off. 12v lithium’s maintain constant 12v from low charge to full charge.
My unit is 7 years old. Every year it gets better and better at its job. Real time feed back and never has technical difficulties. As long as I’m still strong enough to hold him over the edge of the boat by the ankles I’ll stick with what I been using.
Great video! I have the same setup minus the Garmin...just added the Mega 360 late last year! Only got to use it once before storing the boat for winter. Can't wait to dial the 360 in. Thanks for all the great content!
that is the exact set up on my boat, you'll love it. to save your self some cash, what I did is not spend the money to link the two. I do have the ultrex which forces you to buy a multi input controller to link. what ever unit I mark a waypoint on its saved to a chip. then at the end of the day or when ever , take the chip to the other unit and it loads and is saved on that unit to.

I was thinking just yesterday that I needed to bump you up about doing it! Just wanted to say Thank you! I enjoyed the vid and look forward to more coming up!! Thank you!!
I enjoy your videos. You are fine with LiveScope on your Trolling Motor because you Bass Fish vs Crappie Fish & aren't using Spot Lock where it only puts you facing into the wind. It is way more troublesome.
How you saved $6000 on fishfinder equipment?!?! Lord son lol. I just skipped on by this video, but left a 👍. I’m not into fishfinders that deep, or my wallet isn’t anyway lol. I just bought a Garmin Echomap UHD 93SV and it killed me to spend that $600
Good advice. I went with a Helix 7 for SI due to price and a Helix 9 DI on the bow with M360. The 7’s are running $800 now so its a good tradeoff for me.
Guys, all it would take to make the screen much larger is to develop a clamp on magnifier screen to fit above the normal screen. My friend built one and made his screen almost double in size for almost no money.
Love the setup. One question.....Since your livescope transducer is mounted to the trolling motor, when you're on spotlock does it constantly change where its reading as the motor keeps you in place.
Great info as always! I just ordered a new boat with the same Helix 9 units front and back. It's good to know I at least have the foundation for the more advanced setup you described
One question, when in spot lock on a windy day or river with current how do you keep the livescope pointing in the proper direction when its mounted to the shaft? My plan was to mount mine on a separate pole to allow more flexibility but after watching this video I'm wondering which way to go.

Got a trip coming up in a couple weeks looking forward to putting this new hardware to use as well as some of the things ive seen on your channel. Tight lines.
Glad to hear you moved up with electronics. Looking forward to info vids about mega 360 and livescope. I just ordered a G4N Helix 10 with mega 360 and a 1222 garmin with my livescope last Monday. You definitely have some of the best informative vids and fishing vids on the net. Keep it up bud.

Would love to see you do "lake specific" segments where you attack well known lakes across the country and show how your techniques apply to that specific body of water. Start on my lake first....the Smallmouth Capital of North America - Lake St. Clair (Macomb, Michigan). :-D
Thanks for all the good info but I could use some additional advice. I mostly fish a shallow river system with side lakes that average less than 10 feet of depth. Would any electronics be useful? If so, what would you recommend? Seems like most of the videos I see are in twenty plus feet of fairly clean, calm water. How do they look in ripping current or water filled with vegetation and debris? Appreciate your insight.
I bought a boat that had two HDS10's at the helm, Replaced both with Helix G4 9" MSI. It had an ultrex upfront but no locator. So I added another Helix 9" and a 360 transducer. Then I added a Garmin for when a LVS 34 gets here..
Great video and gives me something to think about as I'm upgrading also currently! Thanks for the basic, straight forward explanation. You may have stopped me from installing a side imaging transducer on my TM. If it came with the graph I'll put up front, would you just install that transducer at the transom?
I would get a puck transducer instead. They are much less likely to break when you hit a stump or rack and still give you 2D sonar which is all you really need. You can also got a trolling motor with a built in transducer: Humminbird Helix CHIRP Trolling Transducer w/ Temp www.tacklewarehouse.com/Humminbird_Helix_CHIRP_Trolling_Transducer_w__Temp/descpage-HSDT.html
I love my Helix 9 on cosole, and I have a Helix 10 with Mega 360 setup...AND, I bought a Garmin Livescope up front too! So I too have Humminbird and Garmin combo up front!! Love your vids Johnny!
Hi Jonny, thank you for putting out these great videos! I will be putting a Helix side imaging unit on my console and would like your advice or anyone's advice that is experienced with these fish finders. If you were only to run one fish finder at the trolling motor, which unit would you go with. The Humminbird 360, or the Garmin Panoptix? Please let me know. Thanks, Tony
I like your rational approach, that we normal folks can afford. I try to find one model old and refurb. Refurb are the only units actually tested before shipping. And I agree 9 inches is the sweet spot especially now with the widescreen display format. I wound up with a Lowrance Elite Ti2 with Active Image transducer for less than $700 bucks. I just picked up an HDS 9 Gen 2 to hook to my Motor Guide ducer. NMEA 2000 will connect the whole system and give me an autopilot using the Xi5. Got the Motor Guide used for $1200.
I've seen others ask this...when using the livescope and spot lock with some wind or current I'm not able to watch my bait and the fish with the trolling motor turning back and forth. Im really interested in a video comparing separate pole mounts for the transducer
OMG! That is so much the truth! LOL!!!! Knot tying becomes so much more of an issue in your mid- to late- 40's as well. Keeping a pair of "Readers" in your boat at all time is as important as keeping gas in the boat!
I had to change my mount set up last year to one that was higher. Not only does it get harder to see, but hours of looking down so far was killing my neck in the morning. Bigger and closer to your face is better.
I didn’t and that was a mistake. I’m running a really nice interstate group 31, but I’m going to get a lithium put in ASAP. After 1 fishing day, my interstate battery only has 30% of its battery life left. It still gets the job done, but if I forget to charge it, it will die...
Good stuff bud. I am trading in a bay boat this week to go back to a bass boat, I will have a similar setup to what you have, Helix 9 G3N MSI on the dash, Helix 10 G3N MDI up front with Mega 360 and an Ultrex non-link. No Garmin for me, I find the Mega 360 does a good job of locating the fish and structure for me.
Awesome video Johnny. I was thinking about adding mega 360 this spring but I’m holding out to see what Humminbird’s mega live looks like. What are your thoughts on the hydrowave? I’m strongly considering getting it but I’m skeptical.
I have one and will make a video about it later this year. I need to find a new mount for it because mine broke a while ago. It does work, but only in very specific situations
Just re watched this and you did mention that you only need an MDI unit on the front. However, you might want to mention that in order to make Mega 360 work you must have a ‘+’ control head so the MDI + is what you need on the bow. This allows you to display, 360, DI, SI, and 2D on the bow unit. The Helix 9 MSI G4N is the exact unit I have on my new Nitro so I’m excited to see how you exploit it ...
They both have different advantages and applications. I will make a video explaining the difference in the coming months. The biggest difference is that I can use the 360 imaging when my ultrex is on spot lock
Good info. Im considering getting humminbird for front and back w 360 on front. Also probably garmin livescope. Question- on the front how could I use 360 in conjunction w my waypoints?
This video is great and it was definitely a huge help. I did still have a few questions regarding your front hummingbird Helix 9 setup. I noticed your Ultrex has a built in transducer but I can't tell which one it is. Are you soley using this for your front Helix for 360 imaging or do you have it connected to your trolling motor transducer as well? Is your trolling motor transducer MSI or only MDI? Is your front Helix MDI only or did you get the side imaging? I'm trying to see if there is a benefit to me buying an ultrex with MSI or if i shoud go with the MDI model that is a bit cheaper.
Thank you, I love the channel and I love this set up. I really want to do something similar someday. I just wanted to ask you a clarifying question: since you said we don’t need the side imaging on the front unit, could you get the MDI GPS G4N CHO for $999 and have all the features you were talking about?
I'm currently just using a 10ft kayak. And don't really want to go bigger just yet. And I'm looking for a good single unit that can feet between my feet. And transducer I can hang off the side with a mounted pole.
If it is true that fish get conditioned to the sound and vibrations of forward facing sonar and stop biting over time, then individual manufacturers have a chance to take the lead by simply building a sound distorter on the transducer that mixes up or masks the sound and frequency to keep fish from getting conditioned. Wait and see, this is be a huge selling point for the first company to do it.
i love hearing you do the countdown if you could do one as your list of things your discussing,,,,,excellent vid johnny ''wheeler'', we have to officially rename you!
I'd be interested to know what setup you think would be best for a kayak. most of us only use 1 graph. I'd really like to have side imaging but keeping 3-5 mph to scan as you said in the video is unrealistic
Thanks for the great video. I subscribed because your stuff is so very helpful. You mentioned one thing in here that I'd never heard before and I wonder if you might elaborate? You said the side imaging was only clear if the boat is moving at 3 to 5 mph, so don't get it as part of the trolling motor. If that's true I can't understand why it's an option on the Minn Kota trolling motors. I'm looking to upgrade electronics on my boat and was hoping the side imaging would be useful as I use my trolling motor to jig for walley.
I have a helix gn3 on my old boat and got an Allison with a lowrance HDS. The mapping sucks. Think I’m gonna move my helix to the Allison. My si is better at about 7 mph I’m using a second livescope in perspective as my 360.
Why did you get a MSI control head on the bow? You can display your SI image from the console on an MDI bow control head, you can’t change any setting from the bow but you can see it if you want. That would save a few bucks as well
This video was very informative for me. I was planning to get side imaging for drift fishing for walleye, but it sounds like I need down imaging. I was unaware of this difference. Thank you for that info.
Side imaging is for scouting, driving around looking for structure and fish off to the sides of your boat. Down imaging is the same thing, just sraight down, like sonar but better defined. To me, side-imaging is way more useful. You can see hundreds of feet off to the side to help find structure and fish. You can see if the bottom is soft, or hard and rocky and transition points between because harder bottoms have brighter returns. I bought an old Lowrance HDS-8 unit with the Structure Scan box and transducer(both side and down imaging) last year for $400, it's old but works fine. While you are drifting down imaging and/or traditional sonar would be more useful, yes.
Hey! Can you help give me some advice on my current setup? I just bought a 2000 Triton TR21. It came with a Humminbird 899 HD SI much like your 998. That unit is at the console, and I have a small 688 I believe mounted into the front dash. For now, I uncooked the 688 and installed my Garmin 74 CV UHD I had off my skeeter. So here comes where I'm having troubles figuring out what to do next... I have thought about A. Buying a garmin 93 SV to mount at the console and link to my 74 up front and probably remove the 899. B. I have thought about simply ordering the interlink system and running new power wires to the 688 so I can have 2 units linked pretty cheaply. C. I have thought about buying a used HDS 9 or 12 Gen 3 carbon and leaving my 899 on there. I have a friend that has a HDS 9 and I really like how well the 2d sonar reads. And from videos I've seen, their side scan and structure scan is pretty dang good. Or D. should I just leave the 899 alone and buy LiveScope for my Garmin up front? Also, I will mention that I have a Humminbird 1197 on my Bass Tracker. It also has a ram mount, so I can actually take the 899 off and have the benefit of a 11-12 inch screen on my new triton and utilize the same power and transducer cables. As far as I've seen (only had the boat on the water once before I found it has a bad live well hose leak), the side imaging seems to work pretty dang good on my new triton. So I might just be wasting money buying an extra unit except I won't have two units linked unless I go the B option. I just really want to learn to fish deep this year like you do. Thanks! I look forward to your advice.
Garmin says their transducer needs to be 8 inches above the Ultrex motor. No issues? Also, there is a separate pole for the Garmin that allows both hunting with your Ultrex and the ability to separate and hold a Garmin position while in spot lock.
Question, Why didn’t you get the Garmin 1022 instead of the 1022xsv. (Isn’t the “ xvs “ the same unit but the addition of mapping and down and side imaging). Also did you purchase the transom mount transducer with your Garmin ? Sorry if a n00b question, just trying to sort these units out.
I would always have your best unit by your console. You will always need to use the graph by your console to find offshore fish first before dropping the trolling motor and fishing
I'm confused here. Having the livescope transducer on trolling motor makes it useless when you engage the spot lock. What are your fishing usage scenarios for this configuration?
With the humminbirds linked do you just buy one lake master card ? And have the maps on both units? Or do you have to buy a card for both units? Thanks in advance I love the vids have a great day
Johnny, would there be any type of interference RUNNING a hummingbird helix 9 DI and a garmin unit running live scope on the bow. 2nd question is u mention a guy named john suka if my spelling is correct who runs live scope at his console and bow. Does he have a utube channel?
Would be curious to know your opinion after now having both and using 360 and live scope. I am a hummingbird guy and I am undecided on which direction I want to go 360 or live scope curious to know what you would recommend if you had it chose between the two.
Yes you can save $150 buying the control head only, but for that $150 you can get the $400 (retail) MSI/DI transducer. At some point you may move that graph and need a transducer or sell the unit & you will no doubt recoup that $$. Just a suggestion...
Just curious: have you had any issues with your trolling motor on spot lock, spinning enough times to wrap up your livescope transducer and damage it? I recently bought a Terrova and plan to run a single Garmin unit at the front, which will make me run an external transducer and I'm a little leery of mounting the transducer wire directly to the shaft. Thanks for another informative video!
Thank you Johnny! Awesome video. These days we're all budget conscience and this was useful. So, with that said 1) I noticed you have an older Triton like me and you have that old 5" graph stuck in the built-in vinyl covering. I could not tell because of the new Garmin in the way, but did you just leave that in place or did you remove / cover it up somehow? 2) Even with $6K I can not afford all of that and I am running an old Motorguide trolling motor with no spot lock. I was thinking of just getting 1 graph now other than my old 5" lowrance stuck in the original Triton flushmount at the bow. So, would you keep that for 2d sonar and add a 360 or a forward facing sonar if you could only upgrade to 1 graph at the moment? Again, thanks so much. Learned a lot from your videos. God Bless, Chuck
Since your 2 Humminbird units are linked, isn't it possible to have one show what the other sees? Such as having your console unit display the 360 image or having the bow unit display the SI image from the console?
Johnny help a brother out pass that onix on down to a brother needs a good graph . Don't have one one front of the nitro basically cant afford one after the boat payment lol .. Awesome channel bro love randys daily content .

Please tell me why I cannot see my shaded path as I am charting when using auto chart live. Software is updated and is gn4 unit. What screen do I go to after hitting record and what settings to get the shaded area each side of boat to show as I chart?
i appreciate the time you spend on your videos, however, i have to disagree about the livescope transducer on the motor shaft. when you are spot locked, it is constantly turning and not aiming where you want it.
I fish small waters with electric only. Seems like you’re saying that I shouldn’t bother with buying side imaging? Feels like I should be able to dial in the settings to get decent results at trolling motor speeds?
I've got a Helix 9 MDI g2n. It shows a great down image but I can't get the 2d to show up fish and stuff without setting to 18 plus sensitivity.. can you tell me your exact settings for your 9 please

I've seen others ask this...when using the livescope and spot lock with some wind or current I'm not able to watch my bait and the fish with the trolling motor turning back and forth. Im really interested in a video comparing separate pole mounts for the transducer
Just upgraded myself but grabbed 3 93sv uhd and will be adding livescope soon. Will be under 3k total after selling my old 997 and 788!
Thanks for the video .... informative to prospective electronic customers ..... How much for Bass Tank to install ? ... that is included ?
It depends on your boat and the specific graphs you are having them install. You can give them a call to get a quote.
Your still young, when you get into your mid to late 40’s you will understand why screen size matters.
OMG! That is so much the truth! LOL!!!! Knot tying becomes so much more of an issue in your mid- to late- 40's as well. Keeping a pair of "Readers" in your boat at all time is as important as keeping gas in the boat!
Tell me about it!
I'm waiting for someone to produce a 20 inch screen.
lol
True that. At 50 I need a bigger screen.
I had to change my mount set up last year to one that was higher. Not only does it get harder to see, but hours of looking down so far was killing my neck in the morning. Bigger and closer to your face is better.
I hear ya!
Did you upgrade to lithium batteries or add an additional battery to support all the graphs?
Waitin for the Livescop videos from you. Thx
Thanks for the info! I'm make sure to call that out when I make my review of 360 imaging!
@@FishtheMoment 😎
@fishthemoment SUPER SUPER informative vid and in depth but can you tell me why you have 360 imaging and the panoptix both?
They both have different advantages and applications. I will make a video explaining the difference in the coming months. The biggest difference is that I can use the 360 imaging when my ultrex is on spot lock
I think the 360 is better for targeting and positioning on structure while panoptix is better for targeting active fish
Excellent video. Thanks for the info 👍
i love hearing you do the countdown if you could do one as your list of things your discussing,,,,,excellent vid johnny ''wheeler'', we have to officially rename you!
I have more countdown videos coming soon! Haha
That would save a few bucks as well
I fish in the kayak league, and I have a gen 3 Helix 9 msi+ and mega 360 and a heading sensor. As far as kayaks go im as advanced as you can get lol.
Love your videos. On your new setup with 1 graph at console, mega 360, livescope, and 3 graphs at the front, did you have to add another battery?
If you are in the wind; and your spot lock is working hard to keep your boat in place. How well does your live scope work?
Thanks! I look forward to your advice.
thanks for all the great information
Garmin says their transducer needs to be 8 inches above the Ultrex motor. No issues? Also, there is a separate pole for the Garmin that allows both hunting with your Ultrex and the ability to separate and hold a Garmin position while in spot lock.
Make sure if you're going to network helix units that you get the g3n, or g4n and not just the gen 3, gen 4
That is what I discovered from Humminbird staff also.
That's great info to know! Also very annoying.... Thanks for sharing
I am still using 998si on console and 798hdsi on front. If I upgrade do you recommend upgrading at console first or up front with new technology
I would always have your best unit by your console. You will always need to use the graph by your console to find offshore fish first before dropping the trolling motor and fishing
Thank you for this video. Great content.
I'm confused here. Having the livescope transducer on trolling motor makes it useless when you engage the spot lock.
What are your fishing usage scenarios for this configuration?
Jonny, looking forward to seasonal migration seminar!!! Epic 😂
With the humminbirds linked do you just buy one lake master card ? And have the maps on both units? Or do you have to buy a card for both units? Thanks in advance I love the vids have a great day
You’re the best! Thank you Johnny
Thanks Johnny. Any chance you can show your transom mount transducer?
Any plans to provide any Livescope seminars? I'd love to learn how to better utilize my unit.

Johnny, would there be any type of interference RUNNING a hummingbird helix 9 DI and a garmin unit running live scope on the bow.
2nd question is u mention a guy named john suka if my spelling is correct who runs live scope at his console and bow. Does he have a utube channel?
Johnny you can now add the old fish finders to your kayak!
Check out this video. It should help:

Hi Johnny, thanks - great video. However do you have an answer for #1 in my comment covering up the old graph on the Triton? thanks
I have the helix and the 360 . I cannot get and image like yu displayed.. not sure if water clarity has lots to do with it .
Have you done a setup/settings video for the helix? I just got one and have been trying to get it set up.
Since your 2 Humminbird units are linked, isn't it possible to have one show what the other sees? Such as having your console unit display the 360 image or having the bow unit display the SI image from the console?
Hey man great video. Just curious as to your console units tansducer. Do you run a transducer on the back of the boat for that separately?
Johnny help a brother out pass that onix on down to a brother needs a good graph . Don't have one one front of the nitro basically cant afford one after the boat payment lol .. Awesome channel bro love randys daily content .
what mount are you using for live scope transducer?
Which mounts did you go with? Any special battery setups to support the new electronics?

I didn't upgrade my batteries and that was a mistake. They have dies on me twice on the lake. I'm getting some Lithium batteries soon.
Where can I buy the mount for the paniotix transducer mount on the shaft of the trolling motor?
that is called the LiveScope perspective mount. It should be around $99
Have you uploaded in depth videos of how to use the MEGA 360 yet? I haven't seen them but there are also a ton of videos to go through.
This is gonna be helpful for the guy who has to make the choice of: Garmin livescope or Humminbird mega 360 live. I can only have one. Waiting it out to see. Thanks Jonny
I’ll have a review on the Livescope posted next Thursday and then a review on 360 imaging in mid February! 👍
Please tell me why I cannot see my shaded path as I am charting when using auto chart live. Software is updated and is gn4 unit. What screen do I go to after hitting record and what settings to get the shaded area each side of boat to show as I chart?
If the trolling motor is on spot lock, and constantly moving, how can you use the live scope to view one area effectively??
i appreciate the time you spend on your videos, however, i have to disagree about the livescope transducer on the motor shaft. when you are spot locked, it is constantly turning and not aiming where you want it.
I fish small waters with electric only. Seems like you’re saying that I shouldn’t bother with buying side imaging?
Feels like I should be able to dial in the settings to get decent results at trolling motor speeds?
I would just get a livescope unit if you're in a small electric boat. The image will be a lot clearer and easier to interpret as well.
I've got a Helix 9 MDI g2n. It shows a great down image but I can't get the 2d to show up fish and stuff without setting to 18 plus sensitivity.. can you tell me your exact settings for your 9 please
Will the 360 work with all the helix GN3 units no matter the size? 7-12 inch?
Do you use a screen protector on your graphs?
can I share waypoints from a lowrance to a garmin unit? or hummingbird to garmin?
Good stuff! So no capability for 2D sonar at the bow with your setup?
