    I'm gonna come out and say it. I do not care about the cat genetics in Warriors. It seems really nitpicky and cat designs would be a lot more boring. Now I'm just imagining a storyline where Millie cant have kits and she and Graystripe have to learn how to cope.

      same. i'm not reading a fantasy book series with realism in it! besides all designs would be so boring. same with cat behavior. seems people forget that it is fantasy! let the authors have fun with the designs and stuff.

    Pinkish-gray cats actually exist. It's called lilac or lavender and it's an dilution of the color chocolate(brown), the same way gray is a dilution of the color black. It is fairly rare, becouse it's a highly recessive trait.

    I always found the fan base’s obsession with genetics and realism to be annoying. It’s a fantasy with ghost cats and evil cats coming back from hell to fight the cats of the living. Cats have powers ffs. So what if Blackstar looks stupid? At least he’s recognizable. Nothing in these books are realistic and yet they’re one of the most popular animal fiction books out there (much to my chagrin and amusement).
    I do understand that you could make good and iconic designs while following real world cat genetics and to those people who are out there redesigning the characters for fun, more power to you! But like… it’s really not that big of a deal. Like you said. Even watership down is not entirely realistic but no one cares that much because it’s a great book.
    Warriors on the other hand just… isn’t. They’re not good books and the cats looking silly is NOT the reason why they’re mediocre.
    Edit: Also, please tell me I’m not the only one who dislikes the Warriors redux? I tried reading it and it’s no better than the originals IMO. It’s actually worse in a lot of ways.

    • @GracieFitzpeter
      @GracieFitzpeter  2 года назад +8

      Im probably not going to directly talk about the Redux in these videos anymore tbh but yeah, no, I liked it at first but then it took some turns I did not appreciate (ie Sandstorm) and even though it never got finished I read where they were planning on going and they literally stripped the arcs away from multiple characters?? I dont hate it or anything but there were some weird choices for sure

      Yeah, I find it to be poorly executed in places. The lore is cool but the actual story and writing are not good and how some of the characters were changed made them more unlikeable (like Bluestar)

    We LOVE warrior cats, we just hate how the books are being written now. Also if warrior cats were more realistic, everyone would have soooo many half-siblings and probably have kittens with their parents, the cats would look too similar to each other.

    "Hawks don't live in England"
    As someone who loves both cats and birds of prey, uh... that isn't true. There are loads of species of hawk found in the UK. Goshawks, sparrowhawks, hen harriers, marsh harriers, Monatgu's harriers, ospreys...

    • @someguy9893
      @someguy9893 3 года назад +16

      Furthermore if you count kites and buzzards, which are close relatives, that's a further 4 species with the buzzard, honey buzzard, red kite and black kite

    • @GracieFitzpeter
      @GracieFitzpeter  3 года назад +19

      That's fair. I was aware of goshawks and sparrowhawks and mentioned them quickly in text at 16:32 . I was thinking in terms of how fans through traditional naming treat hawks, which is that if a cat is going to be named after a sparrowhawk or goshawk they'd be called Sparrowhawk- or Goshawk- and not just Hawk-. Kite- and Buzzard- are considered traditional names. But yeah obviously if that's what I meant I should've said that, and that of course wouldn't apply to the hawk that took Snowkit. The statement as it stands is wrong and I apologize.
      (Also i noticed I said that cougars only live in North America while a map on screen shows they also live in South America??? That is also wicked embarrassing this entire part of the video is a mess)
      I'll make a correction in the next video, thanks!

    Something weird that stood out to me...one of the only unrealistic things about Watership Down (aside from the psychic and supernatural stuff obviously) is that there are two separate instances of a rabbit (Bigwig and Blackavar, respectively) vomiting, and rabbits can't vomit. It's nitpicky, but it goes to show that most of the rest of Watership Down is very realistic.

    Honestly, while I understand the things you're saying here re: kids not noticing, I also think...you're not giving kids enough credit at the same time? I can't speak for everyone, but animals were one of my Special Interests as a child, and I devoured as many things as I could about animal behavior and everything about them. The whole reason I loved books like Watership down as a child was because the authors took as much pain and care and love as I did as a child towards the animals and real world they were writing about, and the mythology that was given for the rabbits also echoed and mirrored real world mythology as an explanation and comfort for How The World Is. Given another special interest of mine as a child was mythology, I LOVED that it was incorporating those! Because of the real world observations and behaviors mentioned in the books, it led me to look up much more on rabbits and opened my eyes to an animal I just kind of took for granted at the time. Another fictional story I loved was Black Beauty, which had the same 'human-like' animals, but talked about how 18th century humans treated horses at the time, and specifically talked about horse behavior and anatomy in a way that made it clear the writer had been around and loved horses deeply.
    Meanwhile, I tried to read the Warriors books and just bounced right off. I'd interacted with or watched enough cats to know most of the behaviors in the books were just plain wrong, and the Starclan religious system felt too much like christianity instead of the belief systems I'd read about in mythology with people who were closer to nature or in the past. They genuinely did feel like just people in cat costumes, and I wasn't looking for that. I wanted a story that, while would never be 100% real to life, would give the same amount of love and care towards the frankly fascinating social lives and dynamics of cats and make fun and entertaining stories within that construct. Instead...I basically got magic human in cat costumes doing very un-cat things that broke my suspension of disbelief.
    Like, the little snippet of the writing where the person describes the cat 'war cry' way of disputing territory was honestly more fascinating to me than any of the fight scenes I'd read in the book, because it's based on both cat behavior and ancient human pre-war rituals (i.e. the War Cry). For me, at the very least, while I do think the society the books have built are fascinating, there's just not enough grounding in the reality they've set it in to not feel lazy at best and very disrespectful and almost uncaring about the potential, non-human outlook the domestic cat has. The main issue is the *breaking of the suspension of disbelief*, and I feel a lot of people inherently feel that way about the Warrior series, but can see the inherent potential it has as a narrative and wants it to be better.

    • @GracieFitzpeter
      @GracieFitzpeter  2 года назад +2

      Yeah fair. I think it depends on the person. I pointed out a couple things that I could tell were blatantly wrong when I was a child, but I also didn't care enough about those things to stop reading. I personally dont see the lack of realism as being anywhere close to the series biggest flaw, but I understand to someone who cares about and is knowledgable about cats and cat behavior the series is probably completely unreadable.

      @krscartwright4951 2 года назад

      I can understand how you feel, although in my case I add a couple of things. As someone who loves animals in general and wants to look up everything about them. I too think that cat genetics being 100% accurate wouldn't make the books better, and that such inaccuracies are not necessarily bad when it comes to fantasy stories.
    BUT the genre these books are being written in is called xenofiction. Xenofiction is specifically based in creating media that tells stories through the eyes of non-humans, creating unique scenarios that wouldn't happen if they were humans. If the cats are just "small furry humans", that doesn't give us much to work with at all, does it?
    In my opinion Warriors books are decent-to-mid fantasy books but very very very bad xenofiction books.

    I don't get why people think that gay cats or honestly even trans cats are unrealistic, gayness is everywhere in nature basically in one way or another and transness well while not in house cats at least sex-nonconforming behavior has been observed in lions where lionesses take the place of lions in a pride and even grow manes. If those animals had a functioning complex society like ours its not really a stretch at all that some of them would be trans.
