During this Howard show, Elton john was interviewed live and said that "Nothing else matters" was one of the most beautiful songs ever written. When James heard that, his expression was priceless, he took his head in his hands as if he couldn't believe what he just heard. Recently, Metallica was invited to play for a tribute to Elton john and Bernie Taupin. I urge you to watch this if not already done. This time, it was Elton reaction that was priceless.
There's more to the interview where Sir Elton calls in and states that it's one of the best songs ever written and you get to watch James try not to break down crying in front of EVERYONE on Howard Stern. Beautiful moment. Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
Miley is criminally underrated and often dismissed as a disposable pop singer or Disney kid. If you haven't checked out her backyard sessions from 2015 and 2020, you owe it to yourself to do so. Some real gems and so thoughtful. Some great collabs with industry greats and just well done covers.
If she puts a rock album out like this I'm on board with it!! She's indeed very unrated and has the potential to be a solid bluesy/rock type of singer!!
Excellent call. There're some knockout covers and collaborations in there. You really get the sense that Billy Ray raised her on all the right music and she's dying to move in that direction full time. Also notable. her tribute to Chris Cornell with the remaining members of Soundgarden performing "Say Hello to Heaven", holy heck, she made a lot of converts that night.
I always liked her voice but once I listened to a few tracks off of Plastic Hearts…..goddamn I can genuinely say I’m a Miley Cyrus fan after that album.
It's astounding, the change Miley has gone through on every level. She was a completely different person only a few years ago, but now that she's heading in a harder, louder, more aggressive direction....weirdly, I'm a fan. Her version of "Heart of Glass" is spectacular.
She definitely gets better as the song goes on. I like hearing her sing lower. She should sing lower, more; even in this song she jumps up an octave earlier than I would've expected. That being said, I enjoyed this. And wow, people seem to be judging this live performance at the standard of a recorded version and I don't get that. Live will always be rougher.
If someone had told me 10-12 years ago that Hannah Montana would perform with Metallica in the future… I would’ve said “Probably yes, looking at the direction they’ve gone in recent years “.
Being a long-term Metallica fan when I heard that song for the first time I knew that this was something special. Back then I remember that I expected them to probably not perform that publicly, at least not very often. But soon after they played it right away on the Freddy Mercury memorial concert, and I knew something had changed. As James, I found it very brave of them to play it for such a large audience as the band they were at the time. Yeah, they’ve had ballads before but this one was deeper into the openness of emotions than ever before. And what a great song it turned out to be over the years. I love many of the cover versions because each time this song brings out the best of the performers, and Miley’s voice just blew me away.
Thanks Doug! That was amazing! I never gave Miley much attention...til I heard this. I have a new respect for her talent and her appreciation for the song. Such a great collaboration! Totally unexpected.
I saw the Glastonbury performance and was highly impressed but unaware of the context, which makes a lot of sense. I've sensed a theme in a lot of her covers before and since, "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", "Comfortably Numb", "Heart of Glass", "Doll Parts" she knocks them all right out of the park.
If I recall correctly, they said they didn't rehearse this together. This version edited out Miley and Metallica talking for a few minutes amongst themselves right before they played.
Well, in this program Elton John himself (who played the piano for this song for that cover album) said this was "one of the best songs ever written". James' reaction was something.
You should check out a band called The Warning. 3 sisters from Monterey Mexico that are on the Blacklist Album covering Enter Sandman with Alessia Cara. They took the song and turned it upside down and inside out making it a creepy lullaby. Their original music is great ! Mileys voice is deep because she has throat surgery and this is the result.
Doug: That Les Paul was Gary Moore's: Metallica's Kirk Hammett owns one of the most iconic and revered electric guitars: a 1959 Les Paul Standard that was previously owned by Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green and, subsequently, by his disciple, Irish rocker Gary Moore. Hammett, a fan of both guitarists, purchased the guitar for a reported $2 million.

I am a psychiatrist the first time I heard this version I had to sit and stare at the country ( from west cork) it is soul crushing . I need to listen to more than Floyd , yes , genesis and Metallica
This was my wedding song. Took a lot of convincing for my wife to understand why, but after the wedding she said that was the best song we could've picked
We had this as a reading for our wedding too. Got the mother in law to read it, the place blissfully unaware where it was from other than me, my wife and my (older) brother who got me in to Metallica.
We had the original version played at our wedding ceremony. We made all our friends and relatives sit through all it's epic glory. The Miley cover of Pink Floyd;s "Wish You Were Here" is very nice.
Being a huge MetallicA fan & a fan of music in general, when they put out that celebration album & I heard Miley, Elton John, Chad Smith & YoYo Ma do this, I was mesmerized. But then I heard Chris Stapleton's version of this same song & it had such a different feel. It was so much darker (and to me) exciting. I thought it was so much better than the Miley version. But neither is still The Mighty Met.
Reacting to any Metallica song is like reacting to macaroni and cheese; we all like it, it's always good, and it is universally loved. The music from St. Anger and that crazy shit they did with Lou Reed aside, the rest are softballs. I hope when people make song suggestions, they aren't just submitting their favorite bands. I think Doug deserves more that just "your jam."
Worth checking out Phoebe Bridgers version of this for someone who really takes the song somewhere new. And Jason Isbell countrifying Sad but True is a joyous affair.
Doug you got to make a video of you jamming on that pipe organ in the back……maybe some yes close to the edge! Anyways love your analysis and your videos are insightful.
It's one of the only covers of Metallica I will listen to and think... WOW, that's almost better than the original and maybe the best cover... but then we also have The Hu
Hey Doug, if you haven't already seen this clip, it is Elton John praising James Hetfield and Metallica on this same Howard Stern show and interview. Stern puts on Elton John on a separate screen and he's live with the interview. He completely BLOWS James Hetfields mind and just about drives him to tears 😢 Here's the clip! ruclips.net/video/wofWGD5TUxo/видео.html
I am looking at those Organ Pipes in the background. Can you do a song and play along with the Hammond ? I was 'hearing' Organ tracks played along with Nothing Else Matters here. It would fill amazing sonic space sustaining notes across the bars.....
Not everybody in metallica loved that song im afraid. This is the only metallica song that Kirk didnt play. All 7 guitars on this song played by James. Intresting partiture though to study . You can appreciate the guitar parts that lost within the melody. Helios fron Greece.
In general I don't like covers that retain original sound and compositional structure. Of course, this performance is just a live performance with different vocalist, but I've heard the studio version of Miley Cyrus cover and it sounds the same as the original. I don't see the purpose of doing such covers. Okey, her voice is really good in this performance, but Hetfield's vocal are not worse either. No additional value is created by this cover and it probably won't withstand the imminence of time and will be soon forgotten. P.S. that's probably the first time I'm a bit sour on what Doug reacts to. :)
same as the original? Don't think so. The piano parts give a different vibe to the intro, courtesy of Sir Elton. Miley's voice obviously gave some different tone to the line, but it was no waste, and even the backing vocals of Trujillo felt really nice. Watt's guitar solo was very Watt, gave a very distinct and dynamic feeling, it had to be different since the original is already very overplayed, I expected a change. And the final cello along with the piano was really good. That final chord change surprised me. This video is just Metallica with a different singer, not giving justice to Sir Elton studio cover.
Uggghhh.... I'm not gonna hit the dislike button Doug because I luv your series. But this one? Not your fault. It's all on Miley. As an old school Metallica fan... I can't take this. Ha! See ya next time...-- G' day!

Is there a human on Earth who hasn’t seen Miley Cyrus’s backyard?
@@lawrenceheadrick she already has Plastic Hearts is a Rock album it has features from Joan Jett, Billy Idol, Stevie Nicks & Dua Lipa.
I always liked her voice but once I listened to a few tracks off of Plastic Hearts…..goddamn I can genuinely say I’m a Miley Cyrus fan after that album.
As a huge Metallica fan Miley was awesome her voice is amazing..I think she is one of the best female singers out there.
I never knew that i needed Metallica, Miley, and Doug on keys. Till now!
It's astounding, the change Miley has gone through on every level. She was a completely different person only a few years ago, but now that she's heading in a harder, louder, more aggressive direction....weirdly, I'm a fan.
Her version of "Heart of Glass" is spectacular.
Well said! I love her “Heart of Glass” cover too.
I really dig her latest album too, something I thought would never happen!
this was my wedding song in 1994, 30 years later it sill is our song...
Miley should do more metal songs... what a beautiful raw voice she has - and quite the range
For this one, I prefer the original song by Metallica. Next Metallica to do is Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Lifelong Metallica fan. My oldest daughter grew up with Hannah then Miley. Bringing it together, for me is pretty darn cool.
I always assumed that Miley Cyrus was a lightweight pop bimbo…. I was SO WRONG!!!!
This was amazing! 🤘😎🤘
She's recently performed w/ Joan Jett, Billy Idol and has covered the Cranberries, Blondie and other Rock artists!
She definitely gets better as the song goes on. I like hearing her sing lower. She should sing lower, more; even in this song she jumps up an octave earlier than I would've expected.

One of the best (and shortest!) guitar solos ever!
And one of best intro in the world... simply but emotional.
Miley is a very good vocalist. Thanks for reviewing this one.
Awesome song by Metallica with the twist of Miley Cyrus on vocals. She is a true rocker at heart and criminally underrated.
If I recall correctly, they said they didn't rehearse this together. This version edited out Miley and Metallica talking for a few minutes amongst themselves right before they played.
As always, an interesting reaction/ analysis Doug.
I do love it when you sit at the piano and play along
S$IT . Never heard that cover before. What a power voice she has. Got shivers in my spine.
Try the "full cover", so to speak, from the album last year.
@@fadetounforgiven will do thanks for the info
@@skatzoheros9 my pleasure. The video itself is actually not that great, but the music...
Doug, funny you should mention Miley's voice reminding you of Stevie Nicks. Check out Miley covering "Landslide" - it's astounding the similarity.
Never thought much of Metallica but this has always been a good one 👍
Well, in this program Elton John himself (who played the piano for this song for that cover album) said this was "one of the best songs ever written". James' reaction was something.
Miley is absolutely magic!
Also worth checking her cover of "Wish You Were Here" from one of the SNL at Home episodes in 2020. Not as good as this, but still pretty good.
My wife and I chose this as our wedding song in May 1993, and now we figure all these remakes are really just an homage to us.
My respct for her . I have no words
I like how hetfield mimicked her ‘who we ah-are’ in the ending

Miley is a Godess!!!
Your piano fitted so well on the bridge part.
Stevie Nick's, yeah, but Tanya Tucker, too. She's pulling from two of her big influences & doing a masterful job.
We had the original version played at our wedding ceremony. We made all our friends and relatives sit through all it's epic glory. The Miley cover of Pink Floyd;s "Wish You Were Here" is very nice.
As is her cover of Comfortably Numb!
3rd? lol
Nice one Doug. It is a great video to react to. I still prefer the black album version but hey, interesting.
Hope u can see more Miley ! Like maybe cover by Janis Joplin or her own mashup w Stevie nicks "edge of midnight" also at Howard Stern
Mileys voice gave me chills
Who wants live version of Battery by Metallica which was uploaded recently?

A tender love song for me, ourselves.
Metallica - Nothing Else Matters (Elevator Version)... Sad but true MAXI CD-single 1993 , 4th track single , 2de Number.

Please record a version of this where you had just a piano track to it!
Released August 12, 1991
Best cover I heard was girl singing on the Voice and it wasn't in the US, but I'm not sure
Yeah she had Reinke's Edema. From all the abuse she did to her vocal cords and had to have surgery on them.
Funny thing. It's the first time I can clearly hear the bass part.
Well done Miley

I agree with Elton John. Its one of the best songs ever written no matter who sings it.
