Spent four years there in the 1980s, now my son is there and I have gone back for a few visits. Much of it is the same but all of the WW2 and Vietnam era buildings are gone. His barracks are really nice which I was happy to see. Columbus is also a lot nicer, the downtown area by the river has some great restaurants and bars.
Yep!I was there some generations later from 8/12/86 to 11/27/86.I was at A-10-2 (Vangaurd of Victory) Harmony Church for Basic and Infantry AIT.The most memorable moment of my life was the US Army Airborne School which i had tons of fun and finally jumping out of the C-130 and C-141 for my qualifying jumps and getting my coveted Airborne Wings of a Paratrooper.My dad went through Airborne School there in 1943 during WWII.Since dad 12 members of my family went through Ft,Benning to serve our country.Its been almost 28 years since i have been there.

Charles, We were the first ones in a training unit that was reactivated. Our drill sergeant said, "We're twice as good, so we're marching twice as far". Besides being surprised by the Army Band playing for us at the end of the march, our drill sergeant surprised us with a keg of beer and strippers from nearby Columbus.
We did 24 mile forced when I was there in 84 Harmony Church can’t imagine 50 forced and I’m. Long distance hiker but my pack dammed sure it’s 75 pounds like it was then .
I attended airborne school as an E-5, graduated, and reported to Infantry Officer Candidate School (OCS) 63d Company, 6th Student Battalion that same day. I did airborne school to get in shape for OCS. It turned out to be a very wise move and contributed greatly to my success.
Oh my, beginning in 1977 Infantry 11B, 78 Airborne, 83 OCS and 84-85 Infantry Officer Basic School .. and by then, had enough of Benning. But now, I really miss those days the older I get. Great video.
One of my Grandfather's attended OCS at Benning in 1950. He graduated and went onto retire as a Major from the Connecticut Army National Guard in the mid sixties. Unfortunately he passed away early at age sixty three in 1983...when I was fourteen. I wish I could have talked to him about his experiences at OCS at Fort Benning.
My father was a Philippine Army Scout Ranger officer. He was sent to attend Advanced Officers Infantry Course at Benning in 1979. He was one of the many allied officers who attended. Then we came to America in 1984 and I wanted to be follow my father's footstep and be an American Soldier. I was at Benning summer of 1996 after my junior year at Norwich to attend jump school. Thanks to Fort Benning, I was no longer a 'dirty nasty leg.'
I served with 2 allied officers in IOBC.Liberia and Kenya.They were assigned to me in the field and 1 became a good friend.I took him fishing on the chatahoochee in a rented jon boat.He loved it and said it reminded him of Africa.

Was at benning as a WLC ( used to be PLDC) instructor from 2014 to 2017 and those old brown "castle" type barracks are still there and of course airborne school and the jump towers, as well as the old chapel and surrounding buildings. Was a good duty station.
it said three DI,s per platoon in my BCT we had only 2 regular DI,s and a DI in training and in one week of training we had a reserve DI. that was in 1975.

Used to know the base like the back of my hand. Could smoke just about anywhere. Lots of EM & NCO club parties not to mention all the company and section parties. Great times before PC changed everything.

I was at Fort Jackson 1975 When we first lined up with our duffel bags - the first thing the drill sargeant did was tell us ' when I say up - you pick your duffel bag up over your head - when I say down - you put your duffel bag on the ground ' then he command loudly for about 5 minutes straight : UP ! DOWN ! UP ! DOWN ! UP ! DOWN ! ... And we also quickly learned the front leaning rest position ... Back then when we did the figure 8 training ( run dodge & jump ), where you run through the two gates and jump over the water pit in the middle, we had the person who was next in line - run behind us hitting us with their belt ... Does anybody who went to Fort Jackson remember the dam dam area ? The sand pit that you had to belly crawl down one hill through the sand pit then up the hill on the other side ? If you raised up even the slightest then you had to start all over ...

I'm just a civilian but if any of you do not mind answering a question. Did they teach firing from the hip and is that still taught? If so what is the advantage? I don't know but it seems like it would not be any faster and that it would reduce your hit rate. Just a guess. Thanks to you all.
Firing from the hip would only be worthwhile if the enemy were in bunch's and very very close (better have a bayonet fixed as well.) and bearing in mind you have to be in the standing position to do this thus exposing yourself on a two way range. Generally used for converting live rounds to empties.
I remember in basic in 69, we had a short afternoon class and some range time on what they called Quick Kill. Basically from the hip or a little higher using hand/eye co ordination. No shouldering the rifle or using the sights.Much faster in close quarters. We started out with BB guns at first

@@NoName-qt6wb 4th Platoon, Sgt. Dillbeck called us "The Commie Killers." We did not get to do PT in shorts. We ran it in woodland BDU trousers, a t-shirt, and combat boots. Tennis shoes were for inspection purposes only. I still have my "yearbook" from Basic. It has all of our pictures, and the names and pictures of the command staff and DI staff. Our armourer was a female corporal.

@@NoName-qt6wb 4th Platoon, Sgt. Dillbeck called us "The Commie Killers." We did not get to do PT in shorts. We ran it in woodland BDU trousers, a t-shirt, and combat boots. Tennis shoes were for inspection purposes only. I still have my "yearbook" from Basic. It has all of our pictures, and the names and pictures of the command staff and DI staff. Our armourer was a female corporal.
@@ronschramm9163 well we ate at the same chow hall & used same PT field, PX etc, I have the yearbook as well. I havnt been back to Benning, maybe one day, ride in a cattle truck. Lol. 1 day & a wake up.
@@NoName-qt6wb I was back one time in the early 2000s. I had to do some training at Glenco, and took leave to go see the Infantry Museum. The original Harmony Church WWII barracks we used had been demolished. Kind of sad about that. Also, the recruits did not have to go through the monkey bars to get into the chow hall.
