I really appreciate that PGS takes the time to capture quality reviews of Boss pedals alongside others that are considered to be more "boutique" or "higher-end". Objectively speaking, the fact is that Boss pedals are comparable in terms of sound quality and construction as other highly-regarded pedals out there. Just because they're so commercially available (and so usually the first pedals beginners go to), many who consider themselves "experts" are quick to judge them as crappy and amateur.
Because there is no right or wrong way to use effects, music is art not a consumer product. If you want to consume that's your business, and think you can only do things one way that's fine. But don't think making stray comments about things makes you anymore enlightened.
Well, bands have been doing this since the 80's, it's nothing new. Chorus gives a single guitar a broader sound. With distortion, the doubling effect makes the guitar sound more powerful.
@01Stratplayer - We recorded this demo of a Boss pedal in a recording studio. Straight into the amp, with no noise reduction, and a very sensitive microphone. Sounds pretty fine to us... : ) Thanks! -PGS Video Crew
The very first pedal I ever got! Christmas present from the parents in 1990 - wow! Thanks for bringing this back to my attention guys! I am going to dig it out of the closet and re-acquaint myself.
I've owned this pedal for over 10 years. The greatness of this pedal is it's ability to be so subtle. You can create a stereo seperation using two amps without even knowing a chorus pedal is creating the seperation. It's perfect for Judas Priest Screaming For Vengence album type of chorus. The best chorus pedal out there for people who hate chorus but love distorted amps in stereo. Too bad they didn't demonstrate this ability in this video.
It gives one guitar a huge sound similar to double tracking and slightly adjusting the pitch of one track. That obviously can't be done live, which is why people like Alex Lifeson use chorus with distortion.
i just got one of these and it cleans your dirties up and it helps with soloing not a bad pedal if you have like for example a 5150 peavey i would use this pedal to make a better clean channel
YES! A chorus pedal that dosen't get too "swooshy" when you pair up with distortion. My Visual Sound H20 makes WAY too much noise when paired up with an OD.
@Faketz The CE-5 is a lot more usable in my opinion. The tone is just less fake sounding as well as it being in stereo (Which i don't persoanlly use but it's nice to have as an opinion if I ever feel like dusting off my old Cube). The added EQ is really just icing on the cake.
woot, my pedal. ive had this pedal for some time, but i never reeally had the time to explore all the combinations of tones this thing can produce (its a really large variety)
i made a comparison one night - put my red witch empress side by side with a ce5 and played the gig alternating the two. Although the red witch won hands down, it died the next week. The Boss lives flawless.
I remember when I got my Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion, about 13 or 14 years ago, and being hugely disappointed when I discovered it wasn't "Turbo" enough for me.
To address to whatever @staplesmcjebus said, I think its all to every individual's taste on whatever they want to put between their signal chain to shape their sound. Although I told myself to not rely so much on BOSS pedals, I actually own an OS - 2 and a MT - 2. Then I also own a BYOC Analog Chorus that is a clone of the CE - 2. So I am kinda BOSS orientated after all...
I owned one of these. In fact first effect I ever bought. Cost me $40 in a pawn shop. Had fun with it, but I really needed an OD or Distortion at the time. Great pedal but I never got to try out stereo :(.
Oh! BTW! My opinion: If you put a Boss pedal in some other box, and write something boutique on it, haters will love it! I like my CE-5, But now i love it, after watching this. =) Thanks to PGS, my relationship is healthy again! =P
It pains me to say it, because I am not really that much of a fan of boss pedals (I do like a few, such as the Blues Driver or DS-2) but this pedal is actually in my opinion the best compact chorus pedal on the market. I mean, listen to those lush tones! and I am a person who loves Lush-ness Also, the versatility on this thing is freaky! I mean, stereo output, and the filter is a lot more useful than a lot of people think. I mostly use the High end for ambient stuff along with a line 6 verbzilla
Wel, aside from Pat's response, it's the best way to slightly more complex chords than power chords without sounding excessively messy. No jazz chord melodies, but it lets you attack those sus2 and sus4's with a better sound, IMO.
@sandobg ....no? it's not a "shitty pedal" if you get usable sounds out of it. he's just plugged into a fender amp, it's not some otherworldly boutique equipment. it sounds great because there's nothing wrong with the pedal.
I love this pedel however, Boss made a chorus pedal from 1988-93 called the Boss Digital Demension C DC-3 or Digital Space D, DC-3 that is other worldly in comparison
I like how in all chorus pedal reviews, regardless of source and brand, they always describe them as "lush"

It sounds like The Cure - A Forest, from their Seventeen Seconds album

I feel that this is an appropriate video to say...
Andy's a BOSS!
Golden earring-twilight zone!!! Love it!
Andy playing Hum again?! Hell yes!!!
It gives one guitar a huge sound similar to double tracking and slightly adjusting the pitch of one track. That obviously can't be done live, which is why people like Alex Lifeson use chorus with distortion.
Golden Earring. Good stuff
PE-DA-LA-SO !!!, lo tuve y lo vendí, me arrepiento. (What a PEDAL!, had it & sold it, totally regret that.)
HUM!!!! YEAH!!!!
It make's distorted chords sound more bigger and intimidating. That's why a lot of metal bands use chorus heavily.
i just got one of these and it cleans your dirties up and it helps with soloing not a bad pedal if you have like for example a 5150 peavey i would use this pedal to make a better clean channel
Dude, was there a bit of "She Wanted to Leave" in there? That's beautiful.

it´s ok using the chorus with drive, nothing wrong there.
but for a review, a clean sound would be better for hearing purposes.
would this play a good bssm john frusicante funk tone with light distortion like the CE-1 does?
i made a comparison one night - put my red witch empress side by side with a ce5 and played the gig alternating the two. Although the red witch won hands down, it died the next week. The Boss lives flawless.
The very first pedal I ever got - still got it - now I'm gonna dig it out of the closet!
I love chorus with distortion, when used right. See "Come As You Are", a little song by a small band called Nirvana for an example of that.
PGS, have you never done a demo of the BOSS Turbo Distortion?
I remember when I got my Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion, about 13 or 14 years ago, and being hugely disappointed when I discovered it wasn't "Turbo" enough for me.
@ghettometalhead you can always raise the effect level so it can be less subtle
What's the difference between the Super chorus?
Boss makes good pedals. Sometimes there ones that just suit my needs better!
@01Stratplayer I like a little extra noise on recordings. Makes it sound more real.
On the Boss chorus pedals, is the Mix knob an overall volume control, or does it "mix" in the amount of chorus effect to the dry signal? Thanks.
Also, the modulation part of the chorus effect help to reduce the "beating thirds" issue
i love this chorus 0:00-1:10

Hi PGS,I have one question: in this video you used the chorus in the send return or between guitar and amp?
it sounds good thats why
great demo & presentation
I love chorus but not really much with distortion only in some cases like when dime bag did it, either way for cleans this pedal is pretty good.
I owned one of these. In fact first effect I ever bought. Cost me $40 in a pawn shop. Had fun with it, but I really needed an OD or Distortion at the time. Great pedal but I never got to try out stereo :(.
turbo distortion + ce-5 sounds like Van Halen!
Best demos on youtube!!
Oh! BTW! My opinion:

I like my CE-5, But now i love it, after watching this. =) Thanks to PGS, my relationship is healthy again! =P
STARS! oh yeah!
You're using the DS-2 in this video but have you actually done an individual video for it? I look for one not long ago.
The filter lets you grab more range of tones compared to normal 2 or three knob chorus pedals.
I think some overdrive sounds pretty good for soloing but yes, I don't see why anybody would put any heavy distortion with it.
damn were you playing Hum? you always play the best songs in your demos. so cool
HAVE YOU GUYS DONE A DEMO OF THE ORIGINAL BOSS CE-1 CHORUS ENSEMBLE??....IF U HAVENT THEN YOU SHOULD WHEN U GET THE CHANCE OR WHEN U GET THAT PEDAL :)
It pains me to say it, because I am not really that much of a fan of boss pedals (I do like a few, such as the Blues Driver or DS-2) but this pedal is actually in my opinion the best compact chorus pedal on the market.

@ProGuitarShopDemos Still using the Royer Mic?
Sounds pretty...boss ;)
@nintendoor1 Because it sounds amazing.
@galanek that might be smart. vintage boss pedals are quite excpensive
I couldn't agree more.
@sandobg ....no? it's not a "shitty pedal" if you get usable sounds out of it. he's just plugged into a fender amp, it's not some otherworldly boutique equipment. it sounds great because there's nothing wrong with the pedal.

What's the song at 3:05 called?!
because the 80s
no
u can find details in Boss's website ;)
Have you guys done the boss reverb pedal demo? Love that one!
Hello hipster boutique dude. Boss CE-2 is one of the best chorus ever.
'cause, well, it sounds fuckin' awesome, that's it.
Does anyone know what the LAST song they play on this demo is? And by what artist? It sounds familiar to me but I can't recall what it is.
A forest!
Love it!
@chuckmastazero It's actually "Green to Me", hehe.
Sounds awesome overdriven actually..
whats the song at 3:14?
Great pedal. You've just kicked me to buy one :).
Anyone knows what the song is at 4:00?
@staplesmcjebus Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying this is a shitty pedal, I'm just saying that these guys are amazing at demos, that's all.
@deadbirdsings
All Boss effects are digital
wat chorus pedal can give me the best sound for come as u are and lithium
@galanek same here, first pedal I ever bought. hehehe. still using it , but trough the loop because I find it to be noisy in the chain
@Eroos94 Green To Me by the band Hum.
true by pass???? please reply.. tnx a lot!
@CK1IRELAND
a forest by the cure?
Cure!
best song. i have this pedal also, df-s super feedbacker
Hmm, that must be the reason why I've perceived a slight boost in volume when activated.
What a disappointment that you did not demo the multiple amp function. :(
Are my ears failing me or this that some god damn golden earring.
@nintendoor1 Thicker sound?
what song is that 4:00
@ghettometalhead a second is a long time for hitting a string
Check out the Providence Anadime Chorus!
@nintendoor1 Rush?
a forest! :)
I own one myself and there is nothing wrong with it...
Quick poll, does anyone actually like chorus?
Depends what you're playing
Sometimes it works pretty great for solos.
The Music at 3:03 have name? so sweet
I wish BOSS would reissue the CE-1 and the jet phaser
why not?
@deadbirdsings The older vesion is analog as with the ch-1, and no not all boss pedals are digital.
TURBO DISTORTION DEMO PLEASE?!
Yeah
because it produces a sound that chorus or distortion could not produce on their own...
