In Canada, that hat is called a toque. This is really useful, I find it much harder to pack carry on only in winter. Silk PJs are not within my budget, but I pack silky polyester long undies (from Lands End) instead of pajamas. They take up less space, and can double as a base layer on a cold day. A couple of pairs of long undies take up less space than heavier slacks and tops - I can alternate the two pairs, and then I can pack lighter weight tops and slacks. Silk scarves are a travel essential for me. I bring quite a few in various colours for every trip, and styled in different ways they can make completely different looks out of the same clothes.
Very cool (pun intended) tips! I use scarves to change the entire look of an outfit. I can go from casual to classy to dressy in seconds, and I never look like a slob.
I wanted to thank you for all your help! My trip to San Diego from Orlando went great! I did pack in a carry-on. I got through TSA quickly. Funny thing in San Diego to come home back to Orlando, in the TSA they have dogs running in between all the people, then I did not have to takeoff my jacket or my shoes or any of that stuff. Did not have to pull out even my liquid bag. just walked through an old fashion metal detector. And pushed everything through the TSA screening. You gave me so much confidence and ease as I went through everything. I have not flown for 20 years. Thank you for making this a joyful experience! My only bummer, my carry-on ended up getting checked anyway, because there was too much carry-on baggage, and I chose the cheap seats, so by the time I got up there, it had to get checked. Murphy’s Law! But thanks again so much for your help. It was absolutely terrific.
Two words: wool socks. I went to Russia during March and I was shocked how many in my tour group didn't pack wool socks. My feet were toasty warm, but to be fair, I'm a knitter so my socks are all hand knit and when you know, you know. My feet are definitely spoiled, still... wool socks. They don't have to be thick boot socks, you can wear thinner wool socks with regular shoes. I find when your feet are warm you can endure the cold longer. I'm thinking about adding backpack straps to my winter coats, I'm so intrigued by that coat you've featured before!! Where did you film this? I'm drooling over the Deruta vase in the bottom of the table under that mirror! (look at 14:20 for example)
I love my hat with the lining. My sick pillow case has traveled with me for 10+ years, Royal Caribbean ended up with my pillow case. Time for a New one. As a woman of color I’m picky about my hair and what I wear on it.
If you want a good lip conditioner/healing balm, try the Avene Cicalfate lip balm. It’s the best I’ve found for cracked, chapped lips. Vaseline makes a big stick of body balm now. It’s not goopy or messy. I’ve honestly been using it under my eyes and on my nose, and I love it!
I use a 12x20 travel pillow with a silk pillow case (I ordered a king size zipper silk pillow case, cut it in half and added a second zipper, have 1 pillow on my bed & 1 in my travel bag.)
Brilliant, cashmere and merino are the best. They can often be found in resale + charity shops of new is too costly. I love the duct tape on the packing cube!!
I live in MN but grew up in ND. Cold winter weather my whole life. I would recommend a coat that goes down past your rear end for traveling. You will stay warmer especially if there is a wind. This suggestion is for sightseeing travel, not skiing, sporty-type winter travel.
I just went to Canada and NY and I brought thermacare with the Velcro strap. You can wear it under anything, and if you get too hot, you can take it off and put it in a pocket or backpack.
Your videos are so great. You r eye mask photo on the plane was hysterical and adorable. Thank you for your tips! I'm getting so excited about an upcoming trip to Alaska in March and I'm try out a travel capsule now to figure out what I will bring 😊.
I didn’t see it on this video, but I cannot thank you enough for the recommendation of the Bernardo down jacket you recommended in a previous video. It’s the one with the backpack straps. What a great find! I used it recently on a 3 week trip to New York City, Toronto and New Jersey. From the freezing cold outside air to the overheated air in museums, art galleries and an aquarium, to be able to take my coat off and wear it like a backpack was a life saver! I had three people stop me and ask about it! With a belt bag and my coat on my shoulders, I was hands free! Thank you so much for an awesome recommendation!!
They do; did you see the other 20 items to keep you warm? Sometimes when people know a brand sponsors, they do not look at the other items. Anyway, hope they help you pack this winter.
My packing hack: I use shower caps for my shoes. I collect them from the hotel rooms. I like them because I can cover shoes individually and tuck them around the perimeter of my suitcase .
I bought this jacket on your review. It's really lightweight and has stretch material on the sides for movement. It's a really great jacket. FYI, I found it ran tight in the chest, so order size accordingly. I got the navy. Love it!
Hey Laurie! I love all your tips! I have been using them and I am successfully working on not overpacking. I do have a tip to share I started many years ago. I purchased a thin packable down vest from Eddie Bauer...it is 800 count down but packs into its pocket. It's very warm but not a puffy!
Laurie, I have watched your very entertaining, thoughtful and practical videos for quite some time! Saying hello now from Duluth, GA, but actually from the last day of a Panama Canal cruise. We will fly home to very cold weather, from San Diego. As a chronic overpacker (what if) this video is going to finally instruct me to cut way back! When home I will use the list to order for a Northern European cruise in June, with days in Amsterdam. Thanks for your time and effort in making these videos for us! ❤ Sylvia
That Cable Knit Hoodie is to die for! ❤️ My birthday is this month, I might tell Hubby he doesn’t need to guess what to buy me. I can pick out my birthday gift myself! 😂

I'm going to Sweden to see my daughter, we're cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the Swedes (who really love our holiday!), and she warned me it's getting really cold and to be prepared. This will be my 4th trip to see her, but until now I've never really known what to pack that isn't too bulky and heavy. Thanks for some great recommendations!
Yes if you stick to a base thermal layer for extreme temps and thin effective fabrics like, wool, 100% silk and cashmere, you’ll be set. But you could be quite warm inside ahhhh!

I’ve recently started using castor oil for dry eye, thicker eyelashes and eyebrows, face oil, and moisturizer. Last weekend I was with my 5 year old granddaughter who had severely chapped lips and chin. After her bath, we slathered it with oil, and it was 95% healed the next morning.
Hello Laurie, Now that I am 59 I can’t tolerate my beautiful silk pillow case- too warm. I have found a company called Sleepletics. They use Celliant to make their cases. It is COOLING. Feels like silk. I turn my pillow around at night to get even cooler.. I will look for ECCO shoes. Thank you
Hi, I have not been there but would love to go! The LILYSILK one is amazing and never hot. I was worried since we are in hot Houston but it has been cool and so smooth!
Hi Laurie. I have started taking a small humidifier with me. Hotels always seem dry to me regardless of the season. I got the little, round humidifier from Amazon. It has a diameter of 2” and just sits in a glass of water. It has helped so much with dry eyes and dry nose. I couldn’t find the humidifier I bought, but I found flower shaped ones by Triifon.
I'm binge-watching all your carryon packing vids for an upcoming trip - thank you for the great tips! What is your best tip for labeling your small containers after you decant into them? Once out of their packaging they all look alike to me and I can't tell what's what - lol
As always, lovely and practical recommendations for travel. I am glad you try to dispel the myth of 'winter packing pain'. I managed very nicely with a carryon in February to Seoul. I am looking forward to buying those silk PJ's for my next trip!
Woah, how did I make that mistake. Oh, there was no space between the word but and the link. I am so sorry! Here ya go again: bit.ly/3TJkzU4 @@sharonlusk7967
I watched many of your videos before a trip to Mallorca last month. Thank you!!! I traveled with a carry on and a backpack (purchased the one your recommended!) and it was great.
I love your travel tips and have used several in the past. We’re flying to Germany in 29 days to enjoy the Christmas markets! My son is stationed there and we’ll be enjoying 10 days with our new DIL and her lovely family. We’ve been warned about the cold temperatures but most wool blends make me itch 😕 Any suggestions for an alternative?
Okay I would try merino wool-or cashmere. But remember the tip from this video about getting hot-you will probably want to wear a t-shirt under a sweater. Here is a plain cashmere I own: rstyle.me/+YRlFyfxGQaB1o5eEDaqctA I bought two “cashmere” sweaters in September from M-‘s and they were super scratchy. But this gray one from the video is like a silky cashmere too.
As a add on to your list, I would recommend a packable down jacket. You can stuff it into one of it’s pockets and is lightweight if weight is an issue. Also, I didn’t know you went to school in the little apple. My parents went to school there.
I'm headed to Minnesota from Colorado next week, this is perfect timing, thank you. So many little things I haden't though of. Eye drops for Colorado are essential (native Colorado) it is the head but the thin cold air dries your eyes out.
We call them “stocking caps” in Coastal SC cause they look like Christmas stocking cable knit. 😂 Great tips just for the winter in general, Laurie! Thank you!
A question, any/all input appreciated! It’s probably a dumb question, but: I live in hot, way-far-south Florida, so boots and many “closed” shoes aren’t a big wardrobe staple. But what about socks? My feet and chicken legs want knee socks for warmth, but the socks stretch out my shoes sooo much. The old “Trouser socks” are thin, but not warm. This is a great video regardless-especially as another Deep South native who grew up with the idea that all sweaters are big and bulky. How did we do that? Laurie makes the huge point that layers can be as warm, and far easier to carry on-while wearing the coat, of course 😉 All the tips on packable clothes for cold weather are greatly needed and appreciated! Thank you!!
Hi! You may want to invest in one pair of waterproof boots like the black one. They have room for socks and maybe a pad? I highly recommend Hot Chillys but they can be thick. Maybe try Amazon so you can return them for free? These boots are free shipping and returns: rstyle.me/+VAr0XtHWIwNP4nYAlU2fcg
??? What is the lip moisturizer that you recommended? The link takes me to Walmart Canada (probably because I’m in Canada), but not to a product page, but instead, to a search page.
Try telling that to scotland! We have that humid cold which makes it feel colder to the bone. But for the rest of the planet yeah that it generally true haha
Laurie. If you don’t mind , what size is the lily silk gray sweater you showed ? I’m trying ti figure out what size to order. I am 5’4’. 145 lbs. thank you so much.
Hi, did I not say? I am so sorry! It is a large and I am 5'8" so they run kind of short. It's so soft and my mom told me so when she hugged me church lol. I apologize; I did not see this comment.
Like the idiot I can be, I threw out my little light weight pouch to fold up my down jacket when moving to HI. Found that I can stuff it into a sandwich size Heafty freezer bag that zips. Saves so much space.
I just wanted to say Laurie your travel tips are phenomenal and you are so fun to watch, thank you! I’m going to Vienna soon so this was very helpful 🌸
What’s the travel immigration form called I need to fill out before I go to DR? I didn’t have it the last time to show when I went through customs but the guy was polite and filled it out for me. I seen everyone just showing it on their phone
Another tip for winter travel is to wear a light coloured jacket. Mine is black, but today I bought a light grey wind and water resistant warm winter jacket for my upcoming UK and Brussels trip. It had occurred to me that walking around in winter in cities, crossing busy roads and getting dark early now in winter….it’s better to be visible!
That’s a fantastic tip! Have you seen my what to pack for a Christmas market trip? The light color will reflect those lights beautifully! As would the light colored hoodie.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie : Yes I have. I’m going to Scotland after the Brussels 🎄markets…… my friend’s house I’m staying at there can be chilly🥶…..packing many layers and a hot water bottle!
I just purchased a oxygen thing for my sleep apnea, so is that considered one of your packages for carry-on? I am hoping it’s going to be little enough to slip in my backpack.
😊I'm glad you are doing this video. Can you tell us more ideas about how you can package in a small backpack so Frontier doesn't charge me more money please? 😂 I'm going to spend Thanksgiving with my family 😅
Hi, I would pack as much as you can in your carry-on suitcase. Or leave more things at home, shop for things when you arrive, borrow some of their outerwear...

Hey Laurie, I was researching carry on bags and on one channel a commentator said that "it's not an expansion zipper it's a COMPRESSION zipper". A light bulb went off.
FYI, Trader Joe's makes a version of that sunscreen and it's 1/4 the price. I switched to it and can't tell the difference. Did you ever say where you're headed. We're spending the holidays in London.

Gotta be warm there!
Hello Laurie,
Now that I am 59 I can’t tolerate my beautiful silk pillow case- too warm.
I have found a company called Sleepletics. They use Celliant to make their cases. It is COOLING. Feels like silk. I turn my pillow around at night to get even cooler..
I will look for ECCO shoes. Thank you
Have you ever been to Iceland? I’m planning a trip there. If so, would love your input.
Hi, I have not been there but would love to go! The LILYSILK one is amazing and never hot. I was worried since we are in hot Houston but it has been cool and so smooth!
In Canada we call it a "toque." Definitely need it in Canada during the winter 😍
For sure!
Hat can also be called a toboggan
My family call those toboggans
Oh yes, I forgot about that term.
I also had one that I took pics of and then could not find the link later. It had two spouts for the mist. Thanks so much!
Those are pretty silk and wool pieces. I've been meaning to add some silk to my travel wardrobe at some point. 🌺Heidi
Hi Heidi, do not miss the other 20 winter tips and essentials.
Thanks for the tips and hugs to your adorable canine ❤
Any time!
I always traveled with mine. I think I left on my last trip. I’m looking for new ones.
I'm binge-watching all your carryon packing vids for an upcoming trip - thank you for the great tips! What is your best tip for labeling your small containers after you decant into them? Once out of their packaging they all look alike to me and I can't tell what's what - lol
Get a little labelmaker! I recently had all sorts of fun making labels for all my travel containers 🙂
I like washi tape from Michael’s or a dot of fingernail polish for a different way.
Thank you! @@TravelTipsbyLaurie
As always, lovely and practical recommendations for travel. I am glad you try to dispel the myth of 'winter packing pain'. I managed very nicely with a carryon in February to Seoul. I am looking forward to buying those silk PJ's for my next trip!
And with layers, so many of your outfit pieces stay clean-ish.
Love all your tips, have traveled a bit and always learn something new from you.
Awesome! Thank you!
I fall in love with that glove 😍
What waterproof pants for men and women do you recommend? Thanks!
Ooh I love these but sized up to a twelve. I’m 5’8” and size 10: rstyle.me/+gggd8dW1n3UCxENBYE5cyQbut they also make lined ones
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie sorry but this takes me to shopLTK.. numerous places to shop and does t take me to waterproof pants
I am so glad! Thank you.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie thank you for the link! I just purchased one in Taupe. 🙂
I have a red one and a blue one.@@cheric4739
If you had Lasix ,it will cause dry eyes. I have been dealing with dry eyes and I went to 2 specialists and that is what they told me. ❤
I will be flying to NJ next month (January). I really appreciate this video!
Ooh have a beautiful trip!!
As a add on to your list, I would recommend a packable down jacket. You can stuff it into one of it’s pockets and is lightweight if weight is an issue.
Also, I didn’t know you went to school in the little apple. My parents went to school there.
I did add the waterproof jacket at the end. Great tip! Our teen is a freshman in Manhattan!
Hi Laurie, great Video! What brand is your crossbody RFID bag please?
Hi, it should be in the description box and pinned in the first comment with all the other links. Here it is if you cannot find it: amzn.to/3NMTqMc
@TravelTipsbyLaurie thank you tons! I have been looking for one with this elegant style but was unable to find it online. Thank you for sharing 😄
I'm headed to Minnesota from Colorado next week, this is perfect timing, thank you. So many little things I haden't though of. Eye drops for Colorado are essential (native Colorado) it is the head but the thin cold air dries your eyes out.
Those little winter essentials are truly necessary! And those fit easily into a carry-on! Have a great trip too.
What kind of sunscreen was that? The link is no longer is available. Thank you in advance!
Coming back to this for ski season trips! Great tips as always, Laurie!
Opening day was this weekend. Thanks for watching and making high quality gear!
We call them “stocking caps” in Coastal SC cause they look like Christmas stocking cable knit. 😂 Great tips just for the winter in general, Laurie! Thank you!
Like South Carolina??? I am so surprised.
Thank you for the reminder of the hat, heading to North Carolina and then Chicago so I will need one 👍🏼
Yes and so easy to pack even in the pocket of a jacket.
Laurie makes the huge point that layers can be as warm, and far easier to carry on-while wearing the coat, of course 😉
All the tips on packable clothes for cold weather are greatly needed and appreciated!
Thank you!!
I'm in Christmas mode now 😂. So ready for the holidays. Great content

Hi , love your tips on travel. Have found them most helpful…🤗
I am so glad the tips help Rebecca.
Beanie in Australia 😆
In Canada your hat is called a toque!
Yes so funny. But true
??? What is the lip moisturizer that you recommended? The link takes me to Walmart Canada (probably because I’m in Canada), but not to a product page, but instead, to a search page.
Hmmm, here it is from Amazon: amzn.to/3ReyXBZ
next video, please include the link for the cute puppy. I want to order a couple of them. 😊
SOOO cute and helpful!
Re: dry air in the winter. Cold air does not hold moisture. That's why it's only humid when it's warm or hot. 😊
Try telling that to scotland! We have that humid cold which makes it feel colder to the bone. But for the rest of the planet yeah that it generally true haha
@@fishy527same in New Zealand
Aquafor is a great substitute for Vaseline. Just an FYI.
Thanks our son has it from his first tattoo. It's huge and will take me forever to use lol.
Great video as always! Love your tips and tricks. 😉
Thank you so much!
Like the idiot I can be, I threw out my little light weight pouch to fold up my down jacket when moving to HI. Found that I can stuff it into a sandwich size Heafty freezer bag that zips. Saves so much space.
Wow so good to know. Hind sight is 20/20
I’m horrible about throwing stuff out that I’ll need later. @@TravelTipsbyLaurie.
Me too! @@kimcarroll1129
I call it a toboggan? Nasal guard is a good product of you have allergies. Laurie, here did you find the RFID slash resistant strap cross body bag?
Hi, did I forget to add it to the links in the first comment? Here ya go: amzn.to/3snfe9D It is smooth satin-y fabric fyi.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie thanks, I think the original link went to a different bag 😎
We've always called those hats stocking caps. A beanie is a totally different thing to me.
Oh wow!
Right? I always thought of a beanie as one of those hats with a little propeller on top, ha!
Once again an AUsome video. Love the grey sweater..wish they’d put that on a half off sale. Thanks for sharing!😎💖🛬💥
I hugged my mom at church last week, and she said, "Ooh that sweater is so soft." And today we are sweating in shorts. It is definitely an investment.
LOVE your Kansas State shirt💜💜💜
Awww, he was home when I made that part of the video.
I just wanted to say Laurie your travel tips are phenomenal and you are so fun to watch, thank you! I’m going to Vienna soon so this was very helpful 🌸
I am so glad you found the tips helpful. I tried not to sound salesy.
I always wear a scarf traveling, season appropriate of course. My sister teases me. Guess who now travels with a scarf😂
Ha!
What’s the travel immigration form called I need to fill out before I go to DR? I didn’t have it the last time to show when I went through customs but the guy was polite and filled it out for me. I seen everyone just showing it on their phone
Hi I do not know. The flight attendants should hand it out mid flight. Pack a pen.
Smart add to the winter trip. I will be in Brussels. @@shelaghjackson9577
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie : I’ll keep an eye out for you…..I’ll be the one in the light grey jacket!😂
I just purchased a oxygen thing for my sleep apnea, so is that considered one of your packages for carry-on? I am hoping it’s going to be little enough to slip in my backpack.
WOW!!
stocking cap or beanie
Love your teaching 🎉😂❤
Thank you! 😃
Image stuff for your lips is the best!!! I discovered that years ago. :)
I loved it!
Do you have a dupe for that amazing sweater? That Lilysilk one is esspensive
I would look for merino wool. One was wool and cashmere and one was merino wool.
Watching this from Los Angeles where it's still in the mid 70s during the day (:
Same in Houston!! haha
What if you have to be on crutches with a fractured leg during a vacation ?
Hi, it's not a problem. In the airplane you or the flight attendant can put them in the overhead bin or somewhere.
So glad the puff is removable. I think they look silly. 😂
Oh, I love them lol.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie The hat looks adorable on you as do your outfits!
What compression bags do you use? Love the prints!
They are in the links I think. Here they are because of the strong zippers and because you get two large in a set: amzn.to/49sBkbc
What brand is the grey sweater? Thanks!
LILYSILK
Hi, welcome to my channel. All links will be in the first comment for ya. They are also in the description paragraph below each video: me.lilysilk.com/3PUr42S
Hey Laurie, I was researching carry on bags and on one channel a commentator said that "it's not an expansion zipper it's a COMPRESSION zipper". A light bulb went off.
I am not following you. Why did the light bulb go off? What did it help you do?
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie you expand the suitcase, pack, close, THEN shut the expansion zipper. I always thought you opened it to get more stuff in. 😅
Love it! @@lynnkihara2323
FYI, Trader Joe's makes a version of that sunscreen and it's 1/4 the price. I switched to it and can't tell the difference.
Did you ever say where you're headed. We're spending the holidays in London.
Thanks! I'll be in Brussels! Hope that rain moves on quick!
