- Not sure of the exact date - all I know is it was a Sunday, I was 9 months pregnant, tired, swollen and sick but there was no way in the world I was going to miss an opportunity to interview the legendary Luther Vandross. And despite my discomfort - it was one of the most enlightening and inspiring interviews I've ever been a part of. Luther was generous, funny, smart and obviously talented. He sings throughout the interview and also gives invaluable advice on life, love and a career in the music business.
My son Tyler was born 2 or 3 days later so he's lucky his name wasn't Luther. lol. This was 11 years ago. WOW.

In 1986 stop to love was my favorite song... I was 16 from Italy! ❗ I listen only English music... I put this song on ring tone mobile phone. When I saw a few days ago that he died I realized how we really are in a short passage...
I love Luther's speaking voice and the way he pronounces his words
I was there at this seminar, it was a birthday gift to myself. i will never forget, I got to hug Luther Vandross and talked to him about the spirituality of being a musician and vocalist. I still have my pictures of this seminar and I remember Nikki being pregnant!!!

Missing Luther. . .great piece of history. It's amazing that 8 years after Luther's death, I'm still learning new things about him. So many lessons from this interview: pursue your passion despite other's rejection of it; cultivate valuable personal and professional relationships; seek inspiration; develop your craft to perfection. . .
This is like finding treasure - listening to creative folks who we are fans of talk about their process - with Luther, Nat & Marcus you just cannot lose
the guy on the piano. I remember there was a young man who was so eager to show Luther Vandross what he could do that he ran to sit at the piano, knocking the guy in the glasses off completely and began playing and singing a song he had written himself for Luther. It was the funniest thing!!! the piano guy wasn't even mad, tho, and Luther was saying, "That's the kind of drive and ambition you need in this business!!"
You better bring it if you knock Nat Adderley, Jr, off the piano!

I remember back in the day when Na't's dad introduced Nat, who was 11 years old at the time.. It was at some concert and we were so amazed that this little kid was jamin with his dad and his uncle.

Wow. Black music is DYNAMIC. I remember when Chuck Berry wanted to change the key of a tune he was playing with Keith Richards and Keith told him no and then said he didn't know why Chuck couldn't just stay in same key and it was apparent that Keith just didn't get it. That going with the spirit/flow and playing what you feel IS black music. Tremendous and dynamic and unless you're black especially when white, you're not going to understand. This is why black music took over America and now the world even with Hip-Hop/rap everywhere. In fact Michael Jordan said @ this RUclips video: Michael Jordan on Arsenio Hall Show (1990) that he changed plays/moves @ will and always gave 110%. THAT'S BLACK. That's Jazz. Beautiful.

Don't know if there's another interview but that was Luther's rep. Cheryl Lynn kinda gave hints to this during a interview she did with Luther after they did "if this world was mine" on soul train. I saw it on RUclips
Also if you have Netflix there's a segment on "20 feet from stardom" where they talk about Luther and Lisa fisher etc... This may help give a little insight, bro.

@ALEXANDER GOMES Cilla Black was never Luther's inspiration. His inspirations were Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, PattI Labelle, Cissy Houston (Whitney's mother) and Diana Ross. He says it here in this seminar and his biography written by Craig Seymour. Cilla Black did not compare with any of these women.
Incidentally, the song "Anyone who had a heart" was done by Dionne Warwick before Cilla Black. Cilla also copied "Don't make me over" after Dionne. This 'copying' caused rivalry between the two.

Luther is one of the all time greats but to call the Caroenters version of "Superstar""bubblegum"? Really? Nah...
I prefer Karen''s version, no question. More haunting... Deeper... for me at least.. Maybe he wanted to take the song in a different direction but to refer to it as "Bubbegum" is a bit of a low blow. My favorite Luther song is "Dance w My father". BTW, EVERY singer I talked to marveled at how Luther sounded live.

Heard the talk about music but not love or his love life at all... I am sure before interview his PR person said any questions about his private life was off limits.
His private life was just that PRIVATE. He was entitled to keep something for himself. He shared his God given talent to us for which I am eternally grateful. I miss you so much Luther

Yes it was really none of our business, we were blessed with his music and angelic voice. The greatest Male vocalist of all time...my opinion
