  • Welcome to Together End Racism in Toronto (TERT), a transformative community engagement project dedicated to building a more inclusive and equitable Toronto. At TERT, we believe in the power of community-led initiatives to confront and dismantle systemic racism and oppression. Our mission is to empower youth from racialized, Black, Indigenous, LGBTQ2S, and other marginalized communities to become agents of change in the fight against racism.
Bangladeshi Canadian Community Services (BCS) and Youth Leaders organized an anti-racism forum and community dialogue on June 22, 2024. During this time, Dr. Hasan, Social Work Educator and Program Advisor at BCS, created the "Anti-Racism Allyship and BRAVE Framework to Combat Racism," engaging youth and community leaders.

    Introduction
Welcome to our video on understanding racism, its impacts, and the importance of anti-racism and allyship. Today, we’ll share insights into these crucial topics and introduce the BRAVE framework for having courageous conversations.
    What is Racism?
Racism includes any individual action or institutional practice causing prejudice, hostility, discrimination, or violence against people based on their race or ethnicity. It can be conscious or unconscious.
Systemic racism, also known as institutional racism, embeds white superiority in policies and processes, resulting in advantages for white people and disadvantages for Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour.
    Impacts of Racism
The impacts of racism are profound, affecting individuals’ access to opportunities, resources, and a sense of belonging. Systemic racism creates patterns of behavior and policies that perpetuate these disadvantages across society, including in employment, education, and healthcare.
    Anti Racism
Anti-racism involves actively opposing racist theories, attitudes, and actions. It’s not just about rejecting racism but taking concrete steps to fight against it.
    Allyship
An ally recognizes their own privilege, learns about the challenges faced by those experiencing discrimination, and works in solidarity to combat oppression. Allyship is about actions, not just words.
    BRAVE Framework for Courageous Conversations
The BRAVE framework helps guide these essential dialogues.
B: Build intention, focus, and safety for honest conversations about race.
R: Respect the topic’s sensitivity while encouraging deeper discussions and respecting each other's boundaries.
A: Acknowledge the uncomfortable realities of both past and present.
V: Validate and accept the experiences of racially marginalized colleagues. Recognize the reality of racism and discrimination.
E: Emphasize your organization’s commitment to racial equity by prioritizing goals and measuring success.
    Conclusion
By understanding racism, advocating for anti-racism, and practicing allyship, we can make meaningful progress toward equity and inclusion
Let’s commit to challenging racism in all its forms and supporting those who experience it.
Use the BRAVE framework to have courageous conversations that drive change.
