Dr. Joseph Hobbs, Chair Emeritus of the Department of Family Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, discusses a new study indicating that chronic stress alone can increase the risk of dying from cancer.
“A new study indicates that chronic stress alone can increase our risk of dying from cancer. Investigators looked at more than 41,000 people over more than 30 years. They found that, even accounting for other clear risks like increasing age and a previous cancer diagnosis, the wear and tear of chronic stress increases the risk of dying from cancer as much as 28 percent. Stress raises levels of the hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which can prepare the body to fight or flee, by making adjustments like raising blood pressure and glucose levels in your blood. But chronic elevation of these hormones can lead to a host of medical problems like hypertension and, as we are finding, an increased risk of cancer death. I’m Dr. Joseph Hobbs.”
