You could have just said they went back to the way they used to name em. I’m 73 and worked on Cats my entire adult life and liked the original way they badged them🥴 Nice of Cat to finally realize that the old way was the best way 👍

No disrespect at all but serious question if you are 73 how long did it take you to figure out how to use a smartphone my grandpa is 64 and he can’t figure out how to turn it on let alone use it lol

Jerry Bell None taken😆 I was forced get computer savvy in the late 90’s when Cat equipment started using ecm’s, tcm’s etc. That said , I resisted smart phones till about four years ago when I found out how good the cameras are and reluctantly bought one....still don’t use the phone much so I’m with your grandpa on that one. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess your grandpa really doesn’t want to learn how to use it😂🤔🤷🏼‍♂️

I have ran heavy equipment all my life . If it is a CAT I can run it . Doziers are my specialty as a pro operator . The new D4 is amazing ! And the next Gen 6 is such a BEAST ! We have about 50 employees and 65 pieces of equipment ALL cab -in Cat equipment 2012 and up . Very nice tools ! Kudos to CAT !

I retired from the guard running cat dozers, the old d7g and Vietnam era dozers turned into them giving us the d6k which was heaps smaller than old d7s weight making me wonder …. Now it comes full circle bc it’s always just been a d4 that lost its identity in the size classification.

I think where this really matters is on the secondary market (used equipment). People buying used where getting very confused about which model is what, affects performance of the machine and the cost/value equation. Glad they made the changes.

I couldn’t have presented a better explanation of the change my self! This was an excellent video on that particular topic. I like the fact that they are cleaning-up the numbering and lettering to a much simpler understanding. I never had a problem with the former model identification, however I like the simplicity of 1 through 11 as it should be in my opinion. I love the Cat brand of equipment and the company’s dedication to the industry we serve. Although I knew previously knew about the changes that were being made, I’m glad there is a video filled with information on the subject for all to understand. Great job!

I guess I'm just so old school I go with the first part of the serial number prefix for example d8h 36a means it was a d8 with a standard transmission a d8h 46a denotes a power shift seems simple enough to me.

    Ok if a d6 is really a d 4 then a d4 must be a d6 or is a d6 a d5 that was a d4 or is the d3 really ad5 that then wanted to be a d4. I think I have it. So which should I get….a d8 or d9. Whew….I am tired

I'm glad they put the xe on the six so I know what to avoid. I want nothing to do with any thing cat makes with electric drive they break down constantly and cat has to come fix them. We have 7 d7e's and half are just sitting because no one wants to run them and we are using our older 7rs instead. The 7e was a flop just like the 336eh

I think just as big a deal is the introduction of a D-1 and D-2 nameplates, they haven't had those monikers for eons. I know they probably are just replacing the previous d-3 and d-4. All in all it makes sense to me as least now they will climb in size more sensibly with the names. But what about the other main reason for the lettering? which is to designate a newer series. If they will be just a straight d-4 or D-5 without an ending letter I wonder how the next series will be identified? Usually a jump up in the alphabet designates the newer machine.

Hi Nick. Cat announced this approach in 2017, which we detailed in the following link. Since that time they have obviously changed their approach to the dozer nomenclature. www.equipmentworld.com/in-major-brand-shift-cat-is-dropping-letters-from-machine-model-names-except-in-dozers/

It’s about time, somebody finally woke up ..... Also notice more low track units as opposed to high track units... Why, because of competition from manufacturers such as Deere for one example and losing sales to them and their smooth and powerful Hydrostatic systems they have perfected over many years. Cat makes some good equipment, but far from the “best” when it comes to all sizes of dozers....
