First comment! I use a husky or carlton file o plate on the takers. They are a progressive gauge meaning the shorter the tooth is the more they take off. Take care!
Morning Tim. Yeah man filing those rakers down to much is an accident waiting to happen. That's like holding on to a bucking bull. When the saw feeds itself into the wood,I know the chain is pretty much right. I've never used a depth guage. With a chain like that one, you are constantly going to have to hold the weight of the saw to keep it from pulling to much and bogging. Guarantee you your arms will be feeling it by the end of the day.
I got the 24inch 460 rancher 1 year old few hours on it runs awesome, and I just got the 18inch 440 xtorque couple months , it cuts nice with full chiesal chain realy cuts good main wood I cut is oak, locust ,cherry good job on channel 👍
my wife got me a 460 for my bday, that 24” bar was to much for me, im not used to it, i put a 20” on it and now i love it, though it ran like crap out of the box, i replaced the sparkplug with an ngk, and put a piece of thin metal tape between the carb and cyl head, that cured the hot start difficulties
Hello Sir from the U.K. these rakers over here are mostly called restrictors because that's what they do, they restrict the amount of the tooth's cut, take care .
Stihl makes a file holder that has a flat file with the round file, you know some people might think its a gimmic it does work the rakers are at the right depth for the tooth size I've been happy with the way my 046 Stihl with a 28 skip tooth cut. The saw in the video is a prime example for kick back and really grabby. Out on the west coast you could run rakers a little lower in alder and maple its soft when its green its not really fibre-ous, fir and hemlock forget it.
Hi Cotontop i love the chainsaw videos i am getting into chainsaws myself it is really cool how you bore cut trees bore cutting keeps trees from splitting if i am not mistaking i know it takes practice to bore cut perfectly love the videos and keep up the great work.
Thanks for the video. If you cannot get a raker gauge bar, could you use a steel rule and a set of feeler gauges to set the raker depth? I would imagine if you put a straight edge across 2 cutting teeth and put a .65 feeler between the straight edge and the raker it would be a reasonable measurement,
Tell you what, don't try knocking your rakers down even a little in cold climate logging. Wanna snap your chain all day? Cut frozen popple at -20 F with low rakers.
Good way to destroy your main bearings running chain like that too. People think that filing the rakers way down cuts faster but it doesn’t. Having good hook in your tooth is just as important as properly set rakers. A chain can be made to self feed nicely AND bore/cut smoothly. It just takes practice and knowledge.
Its awesome because yesterday I filed my rakers and my gauge is def wrong for different chains because it did this jumping thing your showing and now I know awesome videos man
Morning Tim. Good information about the rakers and the importance of the proper adjustment. The other thing is the amount of green grass in the video. Not like that here. White snow everywhere and more coming. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
I always wanted a raker depth guage but I've never found one for a skipped tooth chain like I like to run. Can't i lay a straight edge from tooth to tooth and get an idea on the proper height? I hate that I couldn't attend your felling class. Wish someone would draw me a crossways diagram on a white board or something and show me steps on bore cutting and the safety aspects of it. Also what is "match" cutting? Thanks
I bought a brand new LGX for my then new Ms 460 and the rakers on the left side were hungry as hell. I did just as you - I filed the left side down until they were back in spec. I usually scan down the teeth looking for about a .020 gap between the top of the tooth and the top of its raker. I occasionally throw my Stihl raker gage on them but not often. Usually, I just eyeball them looking for a spark plug difference.
Did that and I saw smoke coming throug the clutch after a while. Lower rankers made the cutting part of the chain stuck into wood while I was holding the trigger. Maybe, it was like that because my saw wasn't strong as that husky.
Great video it is dangerous to file the drags to low . Can't complain about a 372 I've had mine for 17 years and just now put a new carburetor on it. Take care and have a blessed week
Zeta hit us hard in upstate SC today, but I'm lucky so I'm gonna help my neighbor tomorrow cut up a 200 year old blowdown at my great grandmothers old house,, 2020 has been brutal here around Seneca,,, we had the Virus, an EF 4 tornado and now this,,, thanks for giving us quality info man!!!
I use the 2 in 1 that Stihl sells, but I think I did the same thing on my 261cm and 200T because they are cutting the exact same way as the saw you were running. I think my problem is that I'm pushing down way too much on the file when I'm making my passes. I'm really glad you made this video. How often do you have the Felling classes?
Yep I had the same issue with the stihl 2 in 1. I noticed the depth gauges were filed more so on one side than the other. I was leaning to hard on one side. Your nearly better off using one hand and actually push upwards a bit to file the top of the hook. I was thinking of taking the square file out and using it with out.
You got to be careful running your bar straight in to a log snout first when it first touches the log your bar will jump if you are not careful so you need to be ready
Spark arresters are completely and absurdly useless. A proper tuned saw wont put sparks out the muffler. Safety and EPA garbage requirements. Anyone who says different don't run saws. The bar and oily chain are steel on steel running 13000 ripems. A saw can always throw sparks regardless of a spark arrestor.
Tim, I know you don't mix your own gas anymore, but try putting just an ounce of SeaFoam in each gallon of 2-stroke gas... cleans the carbs right up if they haven't been run in a while.
Why did you say you dont use a raker gauge that tells me you are a person not to take advice from someone who doesnt follow the correct way to be safe and pass that on to your followers on youtube you sir need to keep your wrong opinions to yourself
Ive got one saw on my truck dedicated to splitting rounds. I ground the rakers completely off. So when i buck a 20 inch round log,i just stand up the rounds and cut a cross in them. Then a gentle tap with the splitying maul and its over.
First comment! I use a husky or carlton file o plate on the takers. They are a progressive gauge meaning the shorter the tooth is the more they take off. Take care!
I agree... I've always got better results with the Carlton File-O-Plate than the Oregon gauge like Tim showed in the video.

Thanks for the vid. I just wanted to let you know that I’m only 20 so vids like these allow me not to learn these thing from experience so thank ya

Braver than me bore cutting with that.

Careful on taking off spark arrestor. Gov could fine you. But thank for sharing how to fix low depth gauge.

I like my chains hungry Tim. 😜. Keep the videos coming
Me too!.its not that big of a deal.just file the teeth some more to even it oht.sheesh! Like its a big tragedy
Tell you what, don't try knocking your rakers down even a little in cold climate logging. Wanna snap your chain all day? Cut frozen popple at -20 F with low rakers.
I noticed that during the class video. Sure cut's rough when you go to bore with rakers that low. That thin is a beast!

It's not hard on the main bearings lol
@@kendallbyrne2788 I disagree with your opinion.

My brand new Stihl chains react like when boring or cutting, the rakers are probably the issue thanks for the information

Get one of the husky hard/soft gauges, stihl make one too, also the carlton file o plate that works on the individual tooth
I believe the proper height is -15 degrees.

Low rakers are fine just be careful bore cutting.
Just looked up the menu for Huck's Place, I'm in all the way. Thanks for the video.
Tim. It's deadly dangerous to have the rakers to low. The only thing you can do is file the teeth well back.
did you only watch the first 30 sec of the video? thats exactly what he said
@Maciej Jan Długosz
No cash on short videos, 'bla bla' gets the cash
Good show man. Love using the tip. Just the tip and a bit.
Good work looks like your getting practice for next big storm.be safe
Sugi hara does make some of the best bars. Excellent quality. To low of rakers are hard on the saw and on the body

Man, that chain bites hard. Watching that made my arms sore. I only drop the rakers for corded electric saws that turn slow.
I prefer low rakers

Great video
Excellent videos content; thank you for sharing your knowledge, greatly appreciated.
I just seen a video saying take the rackers off your chain . Is he crazy that’s a good way to get a kickback into your body
mate your confidence bore cutting with the saw, jumping around like that... takes a set 😅
I have always bored The heart out to trees so I didn't have to run a longer bar less weight to pack
Same here

Spark arrester gets clogged with carbon, and affects the way it runs.

Good job Tim:):)
is it not dangerous taking the spark arrestor out, fire hazard
Quick question. If a new chain and a new husky is acting like that could it be a clutch issue or just too aggressive?
372xp with a 24inch bar.
very cool video!
You got to be careful running your bar straight in to a log snout first when it first touches the log your bar will jump if you are not careful so you need to be ready
What kind of chain is that
Turn the sword sometimes when it is so worn on the underside, on the other hand the chain looked like it needed to be tightened a bit
Tig the rakers up ;-D

Well show how to file em.
Was this a full chisel chain ?
Id be interested in attending a felling class.
Can't believe I just watched this...

I live in Knoxville Tennessee what was the name of that guy owned the saw I may know him lol.
Hello from Athens TN
@@gypsyst.ignatius5062 hello sir
Tim,
Do you take all the spark arrestors out of your saws?
If you take your time and give the saw time it’s not dangerous
Wow not kidding the rakers are way too short.
The cutting will be done with my little 562 Xp
Your nuts trying to plunge with low rakers and a big bar tip like that
You mean the depth gauges are too low?
Hey cotontop
Tim how do I get in the class by chance

Cottentop III,,, why not just throw that Chain away and get a another??
Just saying. You did not detail what a raker is. How about a closeup to see what you are talking about.
Man, wish I could come hang out with y’all Friday night

For the last time. Not rakers
Depth gauges.
