I think it's better for the environment. If I can't fix it, I try very hard to repurpose. I've been known to paint just about anything. I was given a brass colored lamp and painted it bronze. I once painted a Tiffany-style light to match my then living room. I also actually paint cardboard boxes and use them for various kinds of storage all over my house, like in my bedroom closet.
