Federer was on a 25 match win streak coming into this match. After this he beat Nadal in straight sets at Indian wells. Just couldn’t handle the Bo5 here
Haven't finished watching yet, but something remarkable about the first and second set is how mental this game is. Considering only the level of tennis, Federer was clearly above : brilliant shotmaking, achieving almost everything he tried, and not letting Nadal take the better of him on the backhand side. But, everytime he broke, Nadal broke back. Because of how mentally strong he was. On the other hand, when Federer got broken in the second, he just collapsed. Edit : just saw the 3rd, again, Nadal broke back immidiately
Exactly. Watching now, The mental factor was The key in that match and in the 2009 AO FINAL. Federer mental game was weaker than Nadal. After the AO 2009, Federer was struggling with his game in Indian Wells and Miami. He lost matches that he should have won (against Murray and Djokovic). He regained some confidence in Madrid and after his win at FRENCH OPEN. After this, he won Wimbledon, Cincinatti and lost, too, the USOpen Final against Del Potro (Federer was leading 1-0 in sets, and serving for the second set with 30-0. Should he won the second set, Del Potro wouldnt have the will tô battle a confidente Federer.
For me, Federer is more talented than Djokovic and Nadal, but his confidence wasnt good when they started to play really great (Nadal and Djokovic in 2008 with Federer with mononucleosis and after, the back problems). Federer shouldnt have lost The AO 2009, the USOpen 2009, the USOpen 2010 and 2011 semifinais against Djokovic, the 2015 and 2019 Wimbledon finals too. Tennis is a mental game. And Nadal and Djokovic put Federer mental game in check.
This is such a strange assessment lol. When Federer breaks it’s “good tennis,” when Nadal breaks its “mental strength.” Nadal plays good tennis too. I don’t know how you watch him fire off three amazing passing shots to break serve in the 2-3 game second set and think, “Federer played better but Nadal has mental strength.” Tennis fans are so posh.
@@SJ-di5zu Woah don't make me say what I didn't say. Of course Nadal plays an amazing tennis. But regarding the overall performance and the rallies, I tend to say that Federer's tennis is sharper, more agressive and he gets to achieve his ideas more easily than Nadal. Which makes Nadal's performance even more impressive, because he is able to play his best tennis in clutch moments while Federer is unable to remain consistent under pressure. Federer seems to win more battles, but he surely didn't win the war. And in a sense, this what I tremendously appreciate with Nadal: his ability to overcome situations where he is not dominating his opponent.
This match has way better shotmaking from Federer than I remember. Didn't go to 5 sets but still some excellent shots. And of course this is the match with his coolest ballkid catch.
Federer should have won that match. I Think the factor here was The mental thing. The 2009 AO final too. Federer was playing really good but The mental factor was determinant.
That's what made his 2017 win so legendary... coming back from so many months out and then beats nadal in the final being a break down in the 5th, you never saw that before from Fed.
This was peak defensive Rafa . He couldnt compete with either Federer on Djokovic on non-clay courts after coz his body couldn't sustain the defensive tennis
His last major tournament at his peak was Australia Open 2014, after the physical injury in the final something caused his physical level to decline even though RG later won. Let's say that the best Nadal at his physical peak is close to the best Djokovic and Federer.
Prime Murray has 3 GSs, 1 ATP FINALS and 14 masters 1000, 1 year end number 1. Sinner is very close tô Murray. In GSs, Alcaraz has surpassed Murray. But Alcaraz first GS was easier (without the big 3 in the final).
This match is very very similar to Wimbledon 2019 semis between the two. First set Tiebreak won by FED. Then second set, RAFA wins convincingly (also FED just lets it go.) But the 3rd and 4th set is the key difference. FED was way more mentally stronger in Wimbledon 2019 compared to AUS OPEN 2012, because he had switched his racket and beaten Nadal at AUS 2017, IW 2017, Miami 2017, Shanghai 2017. He knew NADAL was only a threat on clay. On other surfaces, he could beat him. That mentality is what was missing at AUS OPEN 2012. I think FED had his chances in this semi, he could have won it. But NADAL just wouldn't go away......
In the quarterfinals of Wimbledon 2022, in the match with Fritz, he had an abdominal pain that prevented him from serving. Instead of retiring, he continued playing, there were 5 sets and a final tiebreak, he epically won that match but the result was that he could not play. the semifinal against Kirgios and from then on he could not fully recover, he returned but was no longer the same.
He was a one-trick man with Fed and unfortunately that won him many key matches. Djoker was able to neutralize with a weaker forehand, but a much stronger backhand.
Imagine if Federer had a double handed backhand? I wonder if that extra kinda something you get from the left arm could have made a difference? I know his single hand backhand is insane and looks cool but…. It’s Federer. If he did have double handed he’d be also crazy good at that. Maybe he would have won like 3 or 5 more slams who knows

But who would have thought that the next match Nadal played (against Djokovic) we would be witnessing one of the greatest and longest matches in tennis history, almost six hours of incredible resilience and shotmaking! @cocolatin1 I saw it live in person at the US Open, I was there, I will never forget it, was an amazing match, thanks for your recommendation! I live in NY, so come almost every year to see US Open. I also remember watching the 2019 US Open final between Nadal and Medvedev in person, another match for the ages. I regret for not seeing in person the 2011 US Open semis between Federer and Djokovic and then the 2011 US Open final between Djokovic and Nadal, the semis was a match for ages. But, I agree with you, the Alcaraz/Sinner 2022 US Open Quarterfinals and the 2019 Nadal and Medvedev final are right up there amongst the best ever matches played at the US Open. I do miss Federer and Nadal, and it's a pity they never played each other at the US Open. I loved watching on TV their 2008 Wimbledon Final. Too early to tell, but I have faith in Alcaraz and Sinner to do amazing things in tennis history, could possibly be the next Federer Nadal or Djokovic Federer rivalry, we shall see.
@@Laland_1196 Yes this court was so fast, as evidenced by the quick matches full of short points in this tournament like Djokovic Vs. Nadal (only 6 hours) and Djokovic Vs. Murray (only 5 hours).
He wouldn't demolish 2017 Fed as Fed was more impressive against Rafa in 2017 than before. 2012 Rafa would still win I think though as 2012 Rafa was for sure a level (maybe more) above 2017 Rafa and 2017 Rafa was a break ahead of Fed in that 5th set. 2012 Rafa was also physically superior to 2017 Rafa and capable of better defending on hardcourts, extracting more errors and staying in points longer, which was a big part of his game. Not a chance does 2012 Rafa get smoked 6-1 in a set by 2017 Fed either like happened in that 3rd set of 2017.
