An album that reached number 7 in the UK and 26 in the USA, it received critical acclaim on release and has retrospectively continued to do so. It had a re master release in 1994 and again in 2007. It is not underated at all, and least of all by a large number of Genesis fans. I don't get the use of 'underated' anymore.

I love that you picked TLLDOB at number one. I think part of the reason that Selling England by the Pound had such a great reputation is that, by then, they fairly well transcended the genre and form of progressive rock. Unlike a band like ELP (great as they were), Genesis rarely feels held in place by any one style by that point. However, on The Lamb, they've practically departed all known style and form. There was no precedent for what they were doing, lyrically or musically. They had created their own universe and I think that's something easy to forget because they mostly came back to Earth on A Trick of the Tail. But I agree, in that I feel like I'm still learning new things when I hear the album today.
All that said, I could easily take Selling England at number one on another day but the Lamb is a force to be reckoned with.

    • @ImprobableTodd
      @ImprobableTodd 3 года назад +12

Selling England was great because it was like the culmination of all their previous skills, refined to perfection. What makes the Lamb so perfect is that not only was it a concept album, but the concept itself was morphed to provide epic sequences of songs that accentuate their clever dynamic shifts. The tracklist itself is perfection They soar, they rage, they get giddy and foolish, they pull you in with a strange theme that really works. And no two songs sound the same, apart from the delicate instrumentals. But their ferocious dedication to perfection in producing the album left them shattered as a band, touring in bittersweet fashion knowing their genius front man would soon depart.

I think many too many Genesis fans(sorry) tend to place ATTWT lower because to them it represents the end of an era with Hackett leaving rather than judge it solely on its musical value. Some of the songs on there are their finest including the two you mentioned. The weakest track imo is ballad of big, I always skip that track.

    • @martinkulkarni3569

To be honest, nor have I bothered much after TTWT! I just think it is a great album....but like you, barring Ballad Of The Big. I always programme the CD to play the sides in reverse on the CD, so Deep In The Motherlode etc. is the start of the second half. Although I think that that song is ideal as an opener. Have big love for 'Trespass'. It's fault is that it was not recorded and mixed very well. Their ideas had gotten so big, so early. Their studio savvy had not caught up yet. But the remaster helps a lot. "Stagnation", "Knife", "Looking for someone" are great tracks. For me "The Lamb" would probably be first too; with 'Foxtrot" and "Selling England" and "Trick" right behind. "Nursery" is so good, and so much better than anything before, but there are some weaker short cuts that dilute it, and the Live versions o0f the epics destroy the studio renditions.

@@kennethmarshall306 Re 'Trespass'? One can only imagine how that album would have sounded, had the classic line-up been in place. There is hardly any electric guitar on "Trespass'. The band have said how important Anthony Phillips was for their early days, and how they almost packed it in, when he left. He seems to have written some good parts on songs, but he probably did them a great favor by leaving. Collins is obviously a monster drummer, but Hackett brought so much definition, and muscle to the songs, and arrangements.

It's the one which got me into early Genesis. Before I only knew their 80s/90s hits from radio and MTV. I also had the Invisible Touch album on CD. Then on the local radio station in the evening they used to have a segment where they played quiet songs. Carpet Crawlers came on and I was fascinated. Next day I asked my oldest brother with a huge record collection if he had this song. He didn't, but gave me Trespass and a compilation called "Rock Theatre". It was music like I'd never heard before. Soon afterwards I had all the old Genesis albums and prog rock has since been my favourite music genre, with Genesis still topping the whole of it.

I really enjoyed your take on these albums - 25 minutes flew by - very well informed, and nicely packaged with an excerpt from each album as you discussed it. Brought back memories. I will have to go back and check out the remixes you mentioned. I came of age listening to genesis, tull, ELP, yes, gentle giant. Saw genesis at knebworth back in the day, and it was stunning.
For me a funny thing happened though, as each band matured and personnel changed ( and presumably I changed) I lost interest, whereas you appear to have stuck with it.
With Genesis, they peaked creatively for me with Lamb lies Down, stopped listening after Wind and Wuthering.
With Yes the peak was Close to the Edge, stopped listening after Relayer.
With ELP it was Brain Salad Surgery, stopped listening after Fanfare, the last classic ELP song.
With Tull it was Songs from the Wood, gave up on them after "Too old to rock and roll"
With Gentle Giant it was The Power and the Glory ( "playing the game" from that album is up there with anything those other bands did )
    Good times!
These days I listen to jazz with a melodic/progressive tinge (like Metheny or Jacob Collier ).

Like you, I place 'The Lamb' first and foremost. It is the first Genesis album I ever listened to and the one I consider the apotheosis of their art. They obviously can't do it live since they can't really drop the rhythm guitar, but I always miss that bass line in the live versions. You absolutely nailed it in the Top 5... I can flip Selling England and Lamb... I've been Selling England for about a decade... but recently I've started tilting towards The Lamb for the reasons you talk about. The sheer diversity of the songs... and is there a better moment than when Gabriel sings about "hovering like a fly... waiting for the windshield on the freeway" ... a second goes by of suspense and then Hackett lays down the hammer!! Insanely great.
I won't touch the stuff after Duke, anymore... just doesn't interest me.
Post-Hackett was a real sticking point for me (they survived two albums then it just got a bit weak tea). Hackett's solo stuff was more interesting and I wish so many of those songs had been recorded by the band. The idea of Genesis playing "Please Don't Touch," "A Tower Struck Down" (I know... three members of the band on there), Spectral Mornings, Clocks, Please Don't Touch," "Jacuzzi," "Air-Conditioned Nightmare," "The Steppes," etc.. ?? That would have been amazing.

I agree about the post Duke albums... but it's really tough for me to rank my favorites. I think the first Genesis song I ever heard on the radio was Dancing with the Moonlit Night. Then I heard the Seconds Out record from an older friend that was into Jethro Tull. I was blown away by the epic Firth of Fifth. Then after hearing Genesis Live with Gabriel, I bought all the Gabriel era albums. I remember hearing the Punk inspiring "Back in NY" on 91X (alternative radio station in San Diego). My 3 favorite "get lost on headphones" albums are Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering and ATTW3. A friend in high school taught me how to play the intro to Blood on the Rooftops... I love that song! I saw the Duke tour at the San Diego Sports Arena but I would rather have been in Paris, October, 1977.

I didn't know until I tried and played it ! Something else I noticed: the great Mellotron intro for Watcher of the skies "borrows" a 6 chord sequence from the prelude to Act 3 from Siegfried . It's very obvious once you've "heard" it... was it intentional ? I don't mind as it sounds so good !

Steve Hackett leaving was quite a big loss to Genesis. And Then There Were Three was the last album of their's that I bought. It was a sadly empty album . The rest were just unlistenable for me .I remember when Wind and Wuthering was released and it was a wonderful winter album as you said in your video .

Thanks for that review. I really enjoyed your comments and your run through the albums. I am generally in line with your own preferences and probably experienced Genesis in much the same way as you did, although, living in South Africa at the time, I never had the opportunity to see them live, instead having to see reconstituted versions of the early tours by Canadian group, The Musical Box, who are pretty good. I am forever grateful to them for being able to deliver a live concert of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, which I had only seen pictures of. 😎

Got stoned to Genesis in my bedroom a lot in the 70's - think I saw them first at the Southampton Gaumont in 77 and again at Wembley Stadium in 1987. I tend to agree with you on the albums and where they stand, I think Gabriel leaving and Collins taking over heralded a change in style and they became a lot more 'poppy' - with a certain amount of Phil wallowing in his misery after the wife buggered off. I bought Trick of the Tail on release too and I totally agree about One for the Vine from Wind Wuthering (I was hopelessly in love at the time, so 'Your own special Way' had certain meaning for me. Foxtrot kicked arse and Selling England by the pound is amazing. I agree with Lamb for the number 1 - its an acid trip from start to finish, but not only that, it had power, it had a story to follow - I LOVED IT! - the thing with Genesis when they were live, is they were still close to note and tone perfect. I used to have Genesis Live on vinyl and played it to death

You nail it quite well. The sad thing with Genesis is to imagine what could have been if Gabriel would have stayed and they would have continued in the path of Lamb lies down. I agree with The lamb at #1 because it is such an imaginative album and such a change in style, while remaining challenging and emotional music. Having that much talent in the same band is just incredible. The problem was the competitive nature of Banks and Gabriel, and to some extent, in an introverted way, Hackett. They were lacking appreciation for one another at that time. You listen to them, and they seem to only care about their compositions, their input, so again, the competitive nature. When one look at what Peter and Steve did as solo artists in the late 70s and early 80s, mix that with the best of what the band did at that time, like the Duke suite, plus stuff likthe long song Smallcreep's day by Rutherford. There was potential for many other masterpieces. Sadly, Wind & Wuthuring was the last one, and after that there was bits and pieces here and there on the band albums and solo albums. Also, if Peter would have stayed, Phil likely remains only a great drummer, or at least, he would have been unable to pull the band into this cheezy pop era.

Even Gabriel fell into the pop era. "In Your Eyes," "Sledgehammer," "Big Time" etc. etc. Even Yes and bands like Rush moved to a pop sound. It helped them survive.

Thanks very much. Your analysis of the competing egos and personalities of the band members is well-judged. Hackett's post-Genesis output has been excellent in places, the first three albums in particular. But man, after that he needed (and needs) an editor. Pushback from the likes of Banks would have tightened up the quality. No doubt.
I like lots of the solo stuff. 'Smallcreep's Day' is superb, like you suggest, especially side 1. Gabriel's albums are all great in their own way. Collins more pop approach was still great. Only Banks' solo albums are weak. I so wanted to love his first album, but it was crushingly disappointing. He needs that pushback too!

Guitar Noir and Darktown are two other great albums from Hackett, but I agree that on other ones there are too much weak stuff. Good pieces are lost on bad albums. That being said, Steve is the only one that showed real love for the progressive music the band did in the seventies. The other four guys are mostly proud of their commercial success in the eighties, either in Genesis or as solo pop artists.

I think Big Pete left at exactly the right time. If he had stayed post Lamb I think a degree of sameness and staleness may have set in. A Trick shows a freshness in approach in some of the tracks whilst still maintaining the musical and structural complexity inherent in previous albums and the guys would have been highly motivated to prove that they could still maintain that standard of excellence with or without the previous vocalist and I would argue strongly that they did here and also with the next album.

I don't agree. Imagine what Pete did with his third and fourth albums integreated into Genesis and add to that some of what Steve did on Spectral Mornings and Defector. There still a lot of potential for freshness, originality and new ideas. And that would have kept the other three on the right path. But we won't rewrite history.
