How To Play "WHEN YOU WERE SWEET SIXTEEN" On Irish Tenor Banjo

Is this the most identifiable riff ever on Irish banjo? Finbar Furey wrote an incredible intro for this song that has become a mainstay of Irish ballads. But how do you play the rest of the song on banjo? Well I've offered two different ideas - one is to cross pick the song and the other, simpler idea is to strum the chords. Which do you prefer?
