Thanks for this comparison, Enda. I learnt it as a three parter hop jig. Would you say the 2 parter comes from the song? Is the 3 parter the original version? Some people double it up too (here in Belfast). I do prefer the feel of it as a single. Thanks for your input!
good question, and I don't honestly know which came first! Have you watched my video for the 3 part version? studio.ruclips.net/user/videoIcQflb0YCFc/edit
My daughters favourite song is the black frog she played it for the fleadh competion now all her music group are playing it 😊
That’s very cool! How did the Fleadh go for her?
👍
1st class Enda. The Breathing & time signatures make this a mountain of a song to play!
You keep your palm completely off the top/ bridge yea?
It’s in contact with the strings behind the bridge and it does lightly brush the bridge
@@IrishTenorBanjo thanks for that👍
Great tune❤
Sooo good thanks Enda you legend!! Is your G tuned up to A?
Yes! Been doing it for about 40 years 😂
Nice one hon the dubliners should do a tribute to barney mckenna love his version of boulavogue on banjo
Awesome, thank you
Hi Enda..do you know a tune called..Where's the wife..? I saw a video on RUclips..the man is not sure if this the right name for the tune..also i think where he is from they call it hornpipe ii.i would love to hear you play a version of it 🙏
ruclips.net/video/oCJb6iPuYDQ/видео.htmlsi=5RSGhJRqo-mqk9cD
I don’t know that one but I’ll have a look at it
@@IrishTenorBanjo Thanks 😊
I've done a lot of research on the name as well and can only come up the same name and that was through a friend in vancouver.but it's one of the first tunes I learned before I heard of the GOAT enda 😂. Niilo sirola has it on RUclips.if that's any help
Once I conquer the banjo it's the mandolin next and then......the world!!! Or cake ya cake 😕
I love cake 🎂
Any advice for a total beginner who just wants to learn a few Irish trad songs ala Luke Kelly and not so much polkas and reels.
I’ve got a few videos for songs like Carrickfergus and Sweet Sixteen, they’d be a good place to start. Also a video on strumming chords for Bill Cheatum - that’s a good tutorial on playing chords
I am delighted to report that, thanks to Enda's great lesson, this was the first set I led at a session, just last night. Check out all he has to offer!
Fantastic!
What tuning is the banjo in
GDAE like a fiddle
Nice And lively EndA you really can make it Sing ❤
Thank you for sharing your expertise with us Enda. It is extremely helpful and appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!
As an American I always giggle at the slide ornaments Irish players do, that somehow resist sounding like blues inflections at all despite being nearly the same as what a bluegrass player would play!
Usually play this with Harvest Home & Off to California.
One of my favourites to go along wit Mickley callaghans fancy and where's the wife..chords sound awesome but give me palpitations 😂😂 I sill play till the fingers fall off or the missus finds where I hid the key so she can get out of the shed....
Great stuff Enda! Love the tune and great suggestions on ways of integrating aspects of advanced playing :)
Thanks Seamus!
How true everything you say here is. Would that I'd had this advice when I started out on the guitar many years ago. I must say that I've never thought of it as practice - it's just enjoying playing. I like your bluegrass picking which starts at 3:15 😊- the ultimate aim of some bluegrassers is to play like this, judging from what I hear these days!
How many crochet (quarter note) beats per minute would you suggest for a reel? A terrific lesson, your advice regarding triplets switched on the light bulb for me, thanks very much!
100 BPM is a good benchmark for decent speed. A fast session probably is in the region of 120 but the 100 mark is definitely one to aim for.
@@IrishTenorBanjo Thanks Enda. I've had a go with the metronome, and I'm pleased to report that I'm able to play around 100 to 110 - but not with triplets in the mix, so there's work to be done!
Love the back story on this and a great tune! Lúnasa..! I'll definitely get back into listening to them now- it's been a while! Always fun to circle back to good music- it's like discovering a great band all over again :)
One of the best!
Beautiful Irish name for a beautiful jig. Go raibh maith agait, Enda!
thank you!
I know this as Catherine Kelly's. Great tune whatever it gets called
Haven’t heard that name. Irish tunes have so many different names!
What a great lesson on making music.
of course when Enda plays a banjo it doesn't really matter how good it is - it'll sound great. ;--}
Yeah!! Got some drive!! Bet people holding back on tapping to the beat
Really good banjo playing great job. 🎼🎵🎶🎼🎵🎶❤️
Thank you for sharing. You’re a great teacher. So much appreciated.
Thank you ☺️
Woooo nice! PS thanks for sharing 'that face'...I've got plenty of that to go around. Inspiring that there's always something else to work on
Hup!!
Very nice
Thanks
Thanks a mil for sharing enda, definitely my fault is when picking i go in that backward ark getting closer to the bridge so that's something to practice and the plectrum squeeze is something i need to work on, the five out of ten, super
Beautiful! I fell in love with bluegrass music over fifty years ago, and also Irish music. I like the speed at which you're playing this tune, and those triplets fit in perfectly. How about a 'We Banjo 3 play Bluegrass' CD someday? 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it!
In a world where tenor banjo resources are incredibly scarce, your channel provides a beacon of light for people learning the instrument. Thank you for your continued effort, time and willingness to share your expertise.I for one would be a far worse player with out your teachings and for that i am truly grateful.
thank you!
Oh no, I am totally guilty of striking those strings hard, especially when I feel like I'm too quiet to lead a tune. I try to not do that too iften because as you point out, after a certain point the strings' magnitude of interaction causes undesirable noises.
Interesting to hear your thoughts about resting you fingers on the head of the banjo. Always wondered why Barney McKenna did that and what advantage he got out if it - but then again, he was Barney McKenna!
it has a place for certain types of picking such as cross picking or playing up near the neck, but for general real/jig picking any heavy panting of the fingers is a distinct disadvantage
Great stuff! I have to take a break from the pipes, because I developed a focal hand dystonia. I still wanna play trad and I'm already a guitarist. I wanna start with the banjo. Are those 250 quid Koda Banjos good enough for a beginner?
They’re probably fine to get the ball rolling. Certainly will do the job for learning the basic techniques but as you improve you’ll tire of them quickly. But that’s a good thing! Sorry about the dystonia, that definitely is a challenge
@@IrishTenorBanjo ah well, it is what it is. I'll take a break from now and then I'll probably have to retrain with a plastic chanter and different bag size. It's the ring fingers on both hands. A real fucker. Thanks for the advice. How much would you recommend spending on a beginner banjo that'll last me a few years to come? I don't have the cash for one of Tom's beautiful beasts...
I was anyway always interested in the banjo, it's also good as a backup for those days you don't wanna deal with gobshite reeds because the sun shines at the wrong angle 😂
@@hendrixplekreeds are a dark art I hear!!
@@hendrixplektry McNeela music or Eagle Music they’ll have beginner series banjos that’ll get ya going
Odd thing with the picks. I use a 1.25 mm music maker pick and I get to to sound the same as the thinner picks to my ear
Must try that pick, haven’t tried those ones
@@IrishTenorBanjo they're very nice picks. I play guitar aswell so I've quite the collection of them. The music maker is just ny. Favourite of the lot, perfect for strumming and picking, I also prefere the thicker picks as you have more control.
Great stuff as usual Enda, Thanks ,
Good advice with the high b. The note I always dread in a tune. My little finger is crap to stretch. Good video Enda.
This is wonderfully produced but I cant figure out what a tenor banjo is. Explanations on line dont help. I have a banjolele strung as a uke. What are you playing ? I love the sound.
Tenor banjo is a 19 fret, 4 string banjo played with a flat pick, and for Irish music it is tuned in fifths similar to a fiddle or mandolin - GDAE
@@IrishTenorBanjo fantastic thanks that makes sense. I'm watching your vids mow on London. Discovered you last night.
Thank you
What pick do you use for mandolin
Dunlop Flow 1mm - heavy but has a point which is good for Irish style mandolin
Banjo players and their relentless friggin triplets...
There aren’t even that many in this one! I can do way more
Savage
Morning. Will be working on my learn by ear in preparation for camp.
Best of luck!
Scool Samraidh Willie Clancy?
@@chazza3670 no, there is a camp in the fall south of Dallas TX that I attend.
Hi Enda How do you learn by ear to play tunes I am using ABCs at the moment Is it just keep playing and it comes with time
@@j2000crawford I listen to the tune a whole load of times both actively and passively. In other words I walk around doing different things listening to the tune and then I also listen and pay close attention to where the melodies is moving. Then I tried to play it and use the notes if I hit any passages that are awkward or difficult.
I like them all but 8 and 10 stand out for me 👍
