Tracey Thorn - The British Masters Season 4 Chapter 1

- Опубликовано: 1 окт 2024
- After Mark E Smith, Noel Gallagher and Goldie, it's time for Tracey Thorn to be inducted as a British Master.
In host John Doran’s own words, “Tracey Thorn is a singular English musician whose instantly identifiable voice has towered over the pop-cultural landscape from the 1980’s to the present day. After being a member of the none more cult Marine Girls, who were one of Kurt Cobain’s favourite bands, Tracey’s voice was then everywhere in the mid-90s due to her work with Massive Attack and most significantly as one half of Everything But The Girl, with their track ‘Missing’ accidentally becoming an undisputed anthem of the era.
Since then, she has become a respected author and journalist and has recently returned to the musical fray with an album of disco belters called ‘Record'."

Tracey Thorn is one of the greatest songwriters of all time - she's so underrated and you can tell she's incredibly smart - Every time I think about who are my top artists, I can never choose because I like too many, but Tracey is always up there on my list - her deadpan melancholy, as she put it, is something that I really resonate to, having been born in 1990, I didn't quite get to experience her beginnings but I do remember Missing when I was about 6 years old and it reminds me of those times in a weird way haha - I just love that no matter what she does, I always want to hear more and that's rare to find in an artist.
She is fantastic - I have so much respect for her, as an artist and an intellect.
I really want Everything But The Girl to get back together. Those two are a wonderful team.
Never happen i asked her in Manchester at a book signing.
Absolutely, such an iconic group!
Well since they are married they’re technically together ;-)
they are already together 😀
Well... new album coming soon :-)
This woman's voice is incomparable. Tracy Thorn is the most unheralded person in the secular music genre of the 90s and all things she's sung have resonated in my mind to be unforgettable. She is a master in the truest sense of the word. Corcovado is her finest work imo
Missing has been one of my favourite songs for years. Not just a great dance song, but an amazing song. And it holds a special place in my heart because it introduced me to the fantastic musical world of EBTG and of course the legendary Tracey Thorn.
Love Tracy, what a legend :).
Complete legend
One of my favorites
It’s so funny that her music always has such a sadness about it, yet she’s pretty bubbly and upbeat in person.
Tracey saying that the track missing still sounds good is a very modest understatement, it’s probably one of the greatest dance songs in history
Whether she’s singing or talking, Tracey’s voice is beautiful❤️
Much respect to her and Ben. Legends
One of my fav female singers. I find her very attractive because her voice is so sweet and delicate I can't help but to see her any other way but beautiful inside and out.
Driving is my jam! One of the first songs I learned the drums with. Still listen to EBTG!
Tracey is my queen... I absolutely adore all of her solo work, Marine Girls and her mastery with EBTG! I will always torment myself wondering what could have come after "Temperamental" as it is perhaps my favorite album ever... at least they went out at their musical peak.
She is SO talented, LOVE her voice! 2 EPIC things she did: 'Each and Everyone' and 'The Paris Match' - would be my number 1 choice dinner guest!
I just love Tracey! I have never heard her interviewed. She is just so talented, warm and a lovely person. Down to earth and full of smarts. Thanks for this video!
I fancied her because of her lisp (and tooth gap) when I was a teenager.
I love it so much when somebody who's really F-ing great is just so understated and classy. I discovered EBTG too late. I still kick myself for this. I was in a Virgin Records in London in 93 buying the Republic CD by New Order and Ben Watt & Tracy Thorn were there signing & chatting with anyone who was on line that bought their new CD Home Movies but I didn't know their work and it was such a missed opportunity. Love the Temperamental album . Maybe the most under rated female vocalist of my lifetime
Missing is timeless and ageless. Relevant today as it was back then. I am not able to date this song unlike some others, for example. 60's rock. 70's rock. Fairly easy to define but Missing is a lot harder to pin down. One could assume somwhere between 1980 and 2020 based on the semi disco beat and choice of instruments. This song actually inspired me to pick up the bass. I play guitar but i want to play bass now. The baseline in this is very simple, but lovely, and it bounces around like a happy child. Tracey has stage freight. I have people fright. I could never ever for the life of me go into some large music venue with tons of people where my favorite musicians are playing. So sadly i missed out on a lot of music. Missed neil young. Missed oingo boingo. Missed joe satriani. Missed depeche mode. Missed the cure. Missed santana.I am currently in some, probably, unhealthy missing binge. Over and over again. It is just a lovely, lovely song.
One of the silkiest, coolest voices! Love EBTG!!
Her voice is so soothing. Loved everything but the girl.
Such a nice interview. Thank you for the great music all over the years Tracey ❤️
Everything But The Girl? A Master, indeed.
A very short, smart and interesting interview with Miss Tracey Thorn! Big congrats to the interviewer that managed to showcase her diverse personality, life and interests in just less than 20 minutes.
Good to see this series back
Siouxsie Sioux, Marc Almond & Liz Fraser please!

Tracey Thorn
Classy, perfect woman. Thank you so much for endless times of joy with your sexy music. A good wine, fine dinner, looking at the sea, a companion next to you listening to EBTG. Perfection.
Still listen to Protection and Walking Wounded after 25+ years.
What is that background noise? I want it in a loop for 10 hours!
Distant Shore is an amazing album, should be in everyone’s collection.
Missing is the best song ever. All time classic
I love how very down to earth she seems to be even with her celebrity.
Tracey, one of the few people of class in the entertainment industry. she is awesome.
Love Tracy a one of a kind voice there isn't a song I don't like I just love it all and Ben too plus Everything But The Girl keep making good music because long as you make music I will listen so thank you for coming into my life so keep making music and enriching my life your the best ❤️
Goddess this woman. Love her!
Check out Everything But The Girl's cover of The Pretenders' "Kid" ... outstanding!
Just like billie ray martin, I like their solo work but they are a lot better off in a band. See electribe 101
Respect to Tracey and her artistic choices and what a Fabulous voice loved it since the Marine Girls. Would love to hear her live one more time ..
If you haven’t already, read Bedsit Disco Queen her autobiography . As it’s brilliant. Like this interview.
Im a rough and ready lad from Liverpool and I love Tracy Thorn. Only just found out last month about all her books and cant wait to start them. I feel so in touch with her.
What a underrated legend
If portishead and Tracy collaborated with Beth and Tracy together would be awesome
she's so beautiful
We can never have too much music from Tracey. Much respect and much love.

Love Tracey - she's just so beautiful...
She looks like a female Robert Smith. I find her fascinating and beautiful she’s not conventional doll like pretty but she’s got mesmerising eyes and a kind and gentle face.
But that voice…
Wonderful! 🤍
Protection is just breathtaking. Loved it since 1995.
beautiful voice! One of the best!
Love EBTG!
She is an amazing person. I love the interview. I never knew anything about her even though I heard missing 100s of times. Timeless track. Lots of memories. I can honestly say I was glued to the screen here. What a privilege it was to view this.
Ben watt is her husband ! So they are still together but not as music duo lol
With a couple kids
They couldn't have at least provided her a side table for her water ? Damn......🙄😑
one of the few white women who didnt crack. she looks the same as when she was missing rain
love her.....love her....
Walking Wounded is still THE EBTG for me. D&B purists slated it. I became a full Junglist because of it. And yea, it all began with Missing :-)
Always great interviews and interesting people, cheers brother.
Tracey Thorn is queen.
I have a sizable collection -- I'm a music addict. But "Driving" is a record I'll always come back to. It's in my top 20. Particularly love the Masters at Work Remix. I hope they open up the new album Fuse to being remixed.
I first heard Tracey Thorn on a Style Council track and I was instantly mesmerised and found that she had her own group EBTG......so I was hooked there and then.....she is intelligent and down to earth, and that whole vibe of hers transcends many genres.......I am glad that she made the most of her superb skills as a wordsmith.....she is a brilliant example of the talent that came out of the British pop scene explosion in the 80's......I feel totally blessed to have been part of that discovery....you just had to have been there as words cannot do justice to what we were lucky enough to see and hear being birthed!
Music acts like a time machine, and I miss you, brings me right back to a place in time, every time I hear it I'm transported ,it's Sunday evening I'm cold alone in my flat eating fish finger sandwich I'm still thinking of my ex.. I've was out buzzing on pills Saturday night. So feeling a bit down now, smoke a dubi feel sorry for myself work on Monday
My mums favourite group ever, I was brought up on Tracey Thorn's beautiful voice. Will always be thankful for that
She's just great.

Lliam Gallagher an outlier? Lol
"Kind of record"?

Sounds like dance music because it's straight up modern pop music. Done by someone original .

Tracey is legendary.
Love this series!
I adore this woman.
a daria and ebtg fan -- my kind of person.
@@romulus_ where have you been all my life
love Tracy, shes just a joy all round.........
Marine girls were so so great
The girl singer in TheXX sounds like TT
Theres tunes from our child hoods that stick out for what ever reason..I've always been in to guitars yet I like alsorts..but that missing tune was so 90s ..got such dark and light all mixed into one .magical tune.and interesting video ..just one of many great tunes
W.E.A. could have been a bit daft about E.B.T.G.. Howie Klein turned me on to them, then the flood gates opened. "The Language of Life" was an Iconic album for me. Still so many moment making songs on that release. I went backwards and forwards with her catalogue of work. Her voice and tone is timeless. "Paris Match", I'm at that cafe, I'm at that bar, smoking my every cigarette. Timeless! At a decade plus- middle-aged male. (no longer in radio) It would still be an add straight to Heavy Rotation.
Love her so much
Brilliant stuff. For a muso, the eerie background noise annoys the shit out of me....
