I miss Max Weinberg and Conan together but it is great to see this interview with Max. He comes across as a great humble guy who loves music. Thank you so much for uploading this video.
Every time I watch a new tape I’m amazed, and can’t wait to see who’s next. Another piece of Gold here. I’m not even a Springsteen, or Conan fan, but enjoyed this immensely just like all the rest. I can’t thank you enough for sharing all these Joe.
Came here from Conan’s podcast with Bruce Springsteen, where they said many good things about Max Weinberg. =) thanks for posting this video, it’s interesting even for non-musicians like me.
That was a great interview with Max Weinberg. So I have this great big gigantic 25,000 pound diesel box truck, recording studio control room on wheels. And early on, in our existence together. I got this Christmas gig. To record. At the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Cool. Awesome! So we were still setting up all day for this show. And I was having technical problems with my audio console. When I hear this voice from behind me say... "you've got a really nice facility here." And when I turned around it was Max Weinberg. He also plays with a full front skin and no hole, in the front of his bass drum. And he prefers a Beyer M-88 microphone in front of his bass drum. I told him I didn't have an, M-88. But I had the M-69. Which was the little brother to the M-88. And he was happy with that compromise. So was I. It's a microphone I didn't frequently use on the bass drum. I still don't. But to each their own. And I am there to aim to please. It was a great, spectacular, stellar show. And the only show. I couldn't even keep the archive for myself of. And I think about that show often. It was awesome. And not quite 30 years ago. But close. In fact it may have been my first winter of operation in December 1991. Yeah. And no archive to remember it by. Damn. Needless to say he is a charming, well mannered, Mensch. So quiet and humble. Not your typical rock star. But your typical best friend. And my honor to have recorded the great Max Weinberg. And I've never heard the playback. I heard it while I was recording it. That one and only time. And there was a complete video crew and shoot with the hat. Of which I had a feed. And gave them a feed. And a 24 track master. And that was the last I ever heard of it. Boo-hoo. I did a great job engineering. I would love to Max things out RemyRAD
Max played on Meatloafs Bat at of Hell album and actually all 3 songs were smash hits on the radio! Joe you are 1 of the best interviewers around letting these people tell there stories! Great interview!
I remember I saw Max speak at my Almamater SUNY Oneonta. A moving speech about touring with Springsteen in India while feeling guilty about the third world poverty outside his Five Star Hotel Window. And urging for a more empathetic planet. Like what we're building now. Nothing on drums - which I came for. Thinking it might be a clinic. But Max was still great. And this was in 1987 way before Conan. I got his autograph at the podium and (having read in Modern Drummer), asked him if he was recovering well from carpel tunnel surgery. Taken aback, he said "Yes I have!". Then later on Conan he proved he was right.
What drummer cannot in some way relate to this guy? Starting at an early age...the hunger for your first kit...seeing Ringo on Ed Sullivan...being inspired... dreaming. He gets it too: MAKE YOUR FELLOW MUSICIANS SOUND GOOD. That's three quarters of the battle right there. He's so relatable, so down to Earth and so worthy of all his successes. And eloquent. I would love it if Max had a radio show or podcast. I could listen to him for hours.
I am ever so grateful there are many people who love to play drums in this world . what would music be without drums ! And because there are so many people like me that would rather play the kazoo then play drums and all the hard practice, technique and work that goes into being just being a proficient drummer , let alone being a great one like Max .
A thing I find interesting, as a fellow drummer, was from a modern drummer interview way back, when he spoke of how Bruce made remarks about his time keeping and gave him a kinda warning. He set about really woodsheding with a metronome until he ironed it out. Many would I feel become disheartened (I did!) but he just set about making everything work at the highest level.
I developed my wrist strength on my bed as a kid, too....🥁🐒 I remember Kent drums as kid, my bud had a set of Kents - it was a rite of passage like having a Harmony or Silvertone guitar before you got a "real" one. I became a guitar player because like Max my 'rents couldn't justify a whole set so I switched to guns - a guitar where at least it's all there even if it's a beast - you have all the elements there to learn on. 🥁
Terrific interview Joe! I am not familiar with Max as a drummer. However, he must be a great player to wind up playing with the E-Street Band & on Conan's show. Although everyone is entitled to their opinions, it's too bad that a few of the comments below were negative comments about Max & his drumming. I have to wonder about how good they are at drumming? Enough said....... Thanks for your videos Joe......👍👍
Thanks for all Max. Have to admit I was sorry to see Vinnie leave. He influenced me greatly with his “Latin” feel. Years later I went on to work with Beaver Felton where “less is more” became a great reality.. I specialize in less! By the way, Beaver is not only brilliant, but a gentleman. Love him!
I didn't know this chap by name , but I have him on records without realising ! Great interview Joe. As a strictly amateur guitarist (and still mediocre), virtually my whole life ,I love to listen to other musicians accounts of what drew them to music and their instrument etc . Thanks again ! 👍
I forgot to say that Max says that growing up in the suburbs of Newark was “isolating.” The truth is that he grew up in Maplewood, NJ which is and was an affluent cosmopolitan and culturally diverse community. Maplewood is a 15 minute train ride from NYC. Plus, his father was a prosperous attorney.
I just watched the Will Lee interview on this channel, and both guys were heavily influenced by seeing The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Ironically, both of them ended up playing in late night TV bands.
Max understands how when we get older, practice time must increase to maintain the skill of youth. For some, practice time needs to double after age 50.
Good post, MHF. Ole Max never needs a 12 piece set. The man, like DJ always "planted that beat." The man still honors the early masters. FYI, string players have lousy rhythm. That's why as a violinist I learned to play drums when I was young. Those youth orchestras were a fiasco at times. Even my first conductor, Rubinstein would cuss us out! :^) Ah, the good old days.
That's interesting you say that about string musicians. Is there a difference in say , the sense of rhythm from a violinist schooled in Classical music and a fiddler from a Country & Western background ?
Haven’t watched the video yet, just having fun with the headline. Seems to me ol’ Max had a slightly more important gig than working for Conan. No offense to Conan...
Hi Bill...,first thanks for your comment and hopefully viewing of this video. You are right about Max’s career...if you view the video intro it will explain what the interview covers as does the thumb nail review. Hope you enjoy when you see it.. Best... Joe
I watched Conan and Max for quite a while before I realized he was also the drummer for Springsteen (I didn't follow Springsteen much)! It was quite a shock, on Conan he always wore a suit and tie, very uptown jazzy type, but for Springsteen jeans and a casual shirt! Lol!
Joe.... there’s only space for a few words.... after seeing it what would you say using the same amount of letters... The fact is you got exactly what the title said plus a whole lot more. What’s wrong with that.... Thanks for watching.., I hope you continue to check out our channel... Best... Joe
Hi Not for you... no offense but he was both Conan’s drummer and Bruce’s. The title of this interview which was made at Conan’s show but included in Max’s own words how he became the musician he is today. Watch the whole video. Thanks for your thoughts.., Best, Joe
As Conan found out Max Weinberg was a complete and total douche bag. Conan often made him the butt of his jokes ,not because it was good natured ribbing, but because Conan and all the staff truly hated Max.Many people have come forward to say the same thing, Max was a total jerk. It's no wonder Conan didn't ask him to work on his new show.
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Joe,Thanks for the reply, I am a big fan of your channel and have watched every one of your interviews. You're very good at what you do. I really look forward to going to the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum the next time I am in that area.
Let me take things one at a time: 1) Max was a robotic turd on drums; 2) Bruce can’t sing and only screams. He also can’t play guitar even as well as a 60’s garage band player; 3) Max was a stiff on the Conan show and added nothing to the show; 4) Max says he left drumming for 3 years. What he is obviously ashamed of saying is that his father pushed him to go to law school. Max did so and graduated. That took 3 years. I never liked his playing and I hope he’ll stay away by playing for Bar Mitzvahs.

Phil Johns but he didn't know Bruce had 2 albums with Vini Lopez on drums before Max.

Good drummers and bass players are always in demand. That will never change.

Max was the best straight man Conan ever had, on top of being one hell of a drummer.
is straight man a reference to something?
Dubs it’s a reference to a comedic team. The straight man sets up the situation leaving the other comedian to express the joke/gag.
I met max...great guy always upbeat

I always thought Max looked like a lawyer playing drums. Musicians shouldn't have to wear suits and should dress casually, no ties.
