- A quaint lil mall up in the town of Mount Airy, NC... didn't know that Mount Airy had a mall? Well, the more you know.
How does this mall do so well? Well, being the only mall for miles tends to help.
I believe a South Carolina buyer has closed on the mall! Expecting to see more stores pretty soon! (After they repair it first of course)
It needs repair but I don't want it to be remodeled, but only for nostalgic reasons. My dad used to sing with his classmates on that little stage in the middle of the mall!
Repair would be a huge step forward for this mall. If they can get that out of the way, then perhaps we can move forward with getting new stores into the mall.
In due time, I may do a followup video on Mayberry to see how things progress, for better or worse.
@@DoomieGruntVentures can you check out Mayberry Mall one last time
There are new stores in the Mayberry Mall
Going back to this one from your recent video of this mall. The mall has gotten far worse in the nearly 3 years while your video work has gotten far better
It has recently been announced that a Hobby Lobby is going to be coming to this mall real soon. I think new owners have now taken control of part of the mall.
great tour of a small mall very well done thanks for another good video
Moved to Mount Airy in 1979 when I was 6 with my mom and Dad! My mom was from Mount Airy and wanted us to live in a better town then the town we were growing up in which was Orlando,Florida! And I’m so glad she did! She saved our families life taking us away from Orlando! I may have been born there! But I’ll never call it home. Like I do Mount Airy,North Carolina! I miss my home town! I live in Princeton,North Carolina now since 2016! I loved going to that mall as a teenager in the late 80’s and early 90’s! I remember when they remolded it in the 90’s! I hope they remolded it again! The inside and outside is so outdated!
Everything from J C Penny's back towards K mart has closed or moved. The hallway is blocked off due to frozen/burst sprinklers. Rumor has it that someone from South Carolina is interested in the building.
Did you meet Sheriff Andy Griffith and Deputy Don Knots?
A hobby lobby! Welp Kohan is not a brick in the wall!
I have been here before it has a good bbq place across from it if I remember correctly
Very good video. Do you know when this mall was built?
Susan Larson I believe it was 1968!
Makes sense that is when the Andy Griffith Show ended it's run.
Thanks for posting this, brings back a lot of memories. I lived in Mt. Airy from 80-94 and can confirm it was renovated in the late eighties to early nineties. By the looks of things here it's doing much better than it was when I last visited in 98.
This mall is definitely related to vernon park and penrose some how pen rose is that empty kmart reminds me of roses and the interior of Vernon
It's in worse shape now alot of the stores in the mall now. County commissions have given the owner's until Feb 1 to decide if he is going to do repairs or it will be closed down except for Belk and maybe Jc Penny's.
Always refreshing to see a small, off the beaten path mall doing relatively well, given it's size, number of tenants and people shopping in it.
Where is Don Knotts the deputy of Mayberry?
Nice exploration videos on your channel, cheers from Hamburg!

UPDATE: With the mall consistently falling into disrepair, several stores have since closed. JCPenney has also announced closure due to maintenance issues. It seems the fall of Mayberry Mall is upon us.
Doomie Grunt that’s so sad! So the mall is officially closed now?! I went to this mall a lot in the 1980’s all the way to the 2000’s!
It's like half abandoned and half open. The end from JCPenney down is closed but the Belk half and a few places like Enmar's are open. The abandoned end is regularly broken into by trespassers but the other end is still in regular service. Out of all the dying malls I've researched, I've never seen one operate like this.
MsEscalade007 oh no trespasser are in it? That’s terrible. No respect at all! It really makes me sad it’s going down hill like this! I loved going to this mall for years!
I was at this location a week ago. There is almost nothing left. There is Enmar Accessories, Belk, Shoe Dept, and a Hallmark store.
You should do a video in the Vernon Park Mall in Kinston, NC. Last time I was there, they still had advertisements for WB TV shows
Great video. Thanks for filming.
Aviva: Lewisville, North Carolina 1/31/13
It’s still open
I was there about a little more than a year ago and I went through the same entrance as you but there was slight flooding and so the water went through the roof and fell onto the ceiling tiles which caused them to fall. We went back the next weekend and it was only then that the staff started fixing and cleaning the area. Good thing we still have the Winston Salem mall
From where Paradise Games was in this video and ending where the entrance and seating area in front of the old Kmart building: all of that has been torn down now. You can now enter the former Kmart store from the outside if it were in operation. I enjoyed watching your video. I live in that town and remember going to the mall as a child to today. The mall was so much better in the 1980s. It had a Peanut Shack, a toy store, and quite a few restaurants back then. Kmart had it's own diner and the entertainment center was right in front of Kmart back then. Many would meet with Santa there and take pictures. There were animatronic elves placed there one Christmas and my brother and I took a picture with ALF another year. There used to be a festival there every October and even a carnival just outside in the parking lot.
I wouldn't count the mall out yet. They put a real nice shoe store in and it makes good business every time i go in there there's a wad of people. It takes up at least of half of Penny's old space. Belk still does well too even if it's independent. Not gonna lie I'm hopeful for the change of owners I think it would make a ton of difference, the SC guy wants to make something of it. They wanted to put a Rural King in the Kmart space but it wouldn't have worked.
Once the new people build it back up I see it doing okay. Mount Airy as a whole needs more competition as it's Walmart mostly dominating the sales.
It's sad to see that it's not doing so well.
The RadioShack has been closed for forever and Kmart was falling apart before it closed. Leaking ceilings and just the ambiance wasn't too appealing I guess? It has its customers but Kmart was the one place everyone went to...I hope it won't close but it's in desperate need of repairs!
Also, the jewelry store that used to be there closed and the knickknack place in front of Kmart is closing now. The mall is very lively though because of all the people who mall walk on the weekdays :)
Thankyou for the Video! I like small Places like this! I hope maybe they can make a small Grocery Market out of that old K-Mart Store. If they fix it up, they can possibly breath more Life into the Mall. The Video was great! Keep up the good Work, Doomie Grant! Thankyou for sharing! Blessed Be! 🌛🌝🌜
Part of the first song kind of reminded me of Togethet Again from Muppets Take Manhattan.
Dommie grunt I have a question for you
A quick update the Belk is still there. but is pretty much dead they could barely keep the ceiling up
F
Won’t be long.
They finally closing this place. It's in horrible shape. And didn't really have much going on sadly.....our town needs something better
oh my last time I visited your channel you had 100 subs now 200!
Was Andy Griffith signing autographs here
When I was 8 I believed anywhere with a mall could have a Chuck E. Cheese I’m 9 now I’m so dumb
Damn, that's a horrible looking place. Not worthy of a name like Mayberry
There are much worse, check out Dommie's video on the Penrose Mall
Early Doomie!
When I was still an amoeba.
