Original Video: • Rameau by Marcelle Mey...
    From Phil (requester)
    Marcelle Meyer (1897-1958)
    A historical document!
"Trained by Cortot, she was the Muse of the Groupe des Six, Stravinsky's friend, the pianist Richard Strauss hired to play his Burlesque. She was also the pianist who revived Scarlatti and the French Baroque with a brilliance never equalled since." - France Musique
    La Triomphante by Alexandre Tharaud:
“How can I describe the shock of discovering Marcelle Meyer's recordings when I was seventeen? Far from the Conservatoire, where her name was not even mentioned, I used to listen to her for nights on end. Today, the spell remains intact.
Above all, Marcelle Meyer's playing was like no other, a solid, well-built piano at the service of a constantly flowing song. Behind the curve, behind the ample, almost improvised gesture - doesn't it sound as if she's just opened the score? - reveals the work of a true goldsmith. I discovered in her, more than in anyone else, desire and instinct.
Beyond her recordings, part of her musical library, passed on to me by her daughter and jealously preserved by me, bears witness to a gigantic repertoire and a daring curiosity. Stravinsky's Octet rubs shoulders with works by Tommasini, Sabata, Rieti and Casella. French composers Auric, Wiener and Satie can be found alongside Tcherepnine and Bartók!)
Her total commitment to the contemporary music of her time, her unfailing friendship with the greatest composers, painters and poets, her conviction that Rameau or Couperin should be played with a passion equal to that more readily accorded to their neighbors Bach and Scarlatti, her faith in Chabrier, whom she defended like Ravel or Debussy, make her a visionary witness to her time. And, in my opinion, the greatest French pianist."
(On the youtube's video, you have the complete Tharaud's comments with subtitles !)

It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to listen to Marcelle Meyer, who I hadn’t heard before. I knew her for being the favorite pianist of Erick Satie, one of my favorite composers, and for also being a collaborator with composers such as Arthur Honegger or Darius Milhaud. Thank you Jeff for giving me this opportunity.

My bed is calling because the alarm goes off before 5 am getting me ready for another day of work. I am enjoying this hugely and I am looking forward to tomorrow afternoon when I can listen at leisure. So much to look forward to every day with Jeff and Stratele Studios!

I hadn’t heard this before, but these works are absolutely wonderful! What a pleasure it was to take these in before turning in for the evening. Thank you Phil! (BTW, there’s a request I put in that’s coming up next month that I dedicated to you.)

Wonderful... The thought stuck me that, if she had lived twenty years later, she probably would have recorded these on harpsichord, which is the instrument Rameau wrote for and which was quite fashionable (overused?) two decades after her recordings.
