That was one of the most incredible pieces of animation I have ever seen, considering the level of visual abstraction involved, along with the planning this involved
Love it. At 5:08 he brings in the red one on that chord. Augmented 6 or dominant 7th going to the ii, really beautiful---oh shit, this is who made Neighbors! That's fantastic, especially with the more extreme violence that was censored in the USA. Not at all gratuitous violence.
Alguien me puede explicar como hacía este tipo para coordinar tan exactamente el sonido y la imagen??? Los que hicimos cine experimental en Argentina somos insignificantes al lado de este genio.....
Do you people know what you're looking at? It's visualizations. Sort of like WinAmp's Milkdrop. Remember Milkdrop? Only thing is it was done in the 1940's, and it was hand drawn. This man was clearly way the hell ahead of his time!
What Mongoose said, plus optical work in the lab superimposing multiple hand-painted footage. Not sure about the middle section. almost looks like stranfs of hair.
Patrick Baele, I agree! I looked up your channel and subscribed :-) Now you might look at mine, if you like, there's a playlist with my homemade videos with classical music ...
Norman McLaren was a fantastic animator, utilising stop motion in ways I have never seen before or since. The title of this piece is actually Begone Dull Care, as is stated in the opening sequence. Please do the animators work justice and name it correctly...please
Phantastic film. I admire Norman Mclaren so much, I think he is a creative genius
"A Phantasy" is a different film by McLaren... this one is Begone Dull Care, from 1949. Best film about jazz ever made.

It never fails to blow me away
This is so different, reminds me of how I would picture synaesthesia. Bravo
what a poetic way to see the music
'Beyond Dull Care' from that wonderful pioneering visual artist, Norman McLaren. Way, way ahead of his time ... :)
i've never seen this film in such a high quality before. truly very beautiful work.
You can't go wrong with avant-garde/experimental film and jazz ;)
In my not very humble opinion I would say that this is the best animated short in the history of animation....There!
I am madly in love with this!!
I enjoyed every exuberant frame of this!
I cannot thank you enough for this post. Thanks for feeding the collective memory. Cheers!
Handmade VJing! Fabulous!!!
the best video I've ever seen
¡Perfecto y excelente! Es el jazz en colores. Muchas gracias por subirlo.
How have I not heard of Norman McLaren until now?, my bad!
Amazing

OMG this is so brilliant!
Precioso
Thelonious Monk vino a mi mente (y corazón)
Lovely abstract jazzy shapes to accompany this jazz medley! SO elaborate!
the shape designs remind me of Dave Brubeck's Time Out album art design: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81tHyH2mfuL._SL1500_.jpg
Esto es lo que ven mis ojos al cerrar
Pure joy.
Synesthesia animated.
Grandiose !

Does anyone know the name of the piece the Oscar Peterson Trio played here?
السعادة النقية 0:16 ❤❤❤
Evelyn Lambart es Co autora junto a Mclaren en esta obra.

Direbear Coat i agree this man predicted the future!!
How did he do it? Which techniques and material?
Scratches and paint on film ;)

And Oscar Peterson too!
뮤비한번 줫같네 눈을 뜰수가 없잖아ㅡ!
I guess that when computer animation was invented, McLaren would have said (just like painter Vasarely did) "I was born too early!"
Although he DID work with computers (just like Vasarely) - it's just that they had to do all that extra manual work...
no just in time; his abstract animations are way better because there's a tactile very human handwriting in it which nobody has done better ever since

me haces re flashar normando

Tis is not not " A Fantasy" this is "Begone dul care" de 1948!!! t'es pas cool !!
Absolute torture.
why?
Amazing. But why does it say "slut" among the end credits? Was this whole thing like a creative revenge on an ex?
in the end it says "end" in many different languages, and if i'm not wrong "slut" is swedish for "end"
A lot of cocain in that time! xD
Looks like a mess
