As someone who just had a 40 year old system just dropped into their lap, I'm so grateful for this video. Playing catch up with an old, non-maintained system is a fight; especially when maintenance can cause more issues to rear their heads. You just made that fight a whole lot easier. Thank you!
100% worked... I cleaned off the lubricant (that the pool supply company recommended), put everything together and tried to line up as well as I could... No leaks whatsoever. Took about 15 minutes. This after I spent quite a bit longer putting on the lube, searching o-ring replacements, clamp replacements, and entire filter replacements. Saved me a lot of time and money. Thank you!
My 7 year old Hayward started leaking recently, too. Hayward is junk. It's sad they can't make a filter canister that doesn't leak. I just went out and super cleaned everything, and it worked! Thanks for the tip...
Great video. Just cleaned ours for the first time and had leaks. The trick was the dirt under the seal. Once I cleaned completely I could tighten back to normal without over tightening. Thank you again
Thanks for the video! A few weeks ago, I put a new O-Ring on my Hayward DE4820 ProGrid D.E. Pool Filter. I lubed it with Lube-Tube lubricant and almost immediately it had a slow drip that would not stop. Today I removed the O-Ring, cleaned it, as well as the two mating surfaces, reinstalled it and now NO LEAKS!
Could you identify what the valve is at 18 min mark at the bottom of the screen where the valve has the same color as the piping? The one that goes into the ground and is closed in the video. Thank you.
Thank God for RUclips and "In your business". My filter was leaking and intuitively thinking - i lubed the O-Ring with all of the lube I had. Turned the pump on and it was leaking worse. Then.... I followed your procedure - everything clean as can be - and turned the pump back on. No Leaks!!! Thanks !!!
I've always heard to lube it with silicone lube to make it last longer. Wow never heard the opposite. Don't you open the air valve at the end to get the air out of the system so the pool cleaner will go about in the pool?
I've found those orings last forever even without lube so for me it's much better to just forget the lube and not have the leaks. I can't even remember the last time I had to replace one of the orings and I do this every day of my life for the last 5 years.
I waited too long to open this year, and let me tell you, a week makes all the difference! Where previous years I had crystal clear water under the cover, this year it was a swamp! I had to disassemble and reassemble that darn filter 10 times in 2 days, and of course the last time I put it back together, it leaked. It was full of crud all around the gasket. I cleaned it real good and no more leaks.
My filters were recently cleaned. Now when the pump is running there is water dripping from the bottom not from the belly band. When off I can hear a hissing noise coming from the filter housing and when the filter kicks on there is a massive amount of air bubbles in the pool and my spillway won't work. My pool guy took out the drain plug when the filters were cleaned and there was a broken O ring. He "made an O ring" and I think it is not holding. What is your opinion ?
Perfect video ! I had the same problem. On the side of my Hayward it says use grease. So the first time I took it apart myself I followed the directions. It started leaking. Watched this video, cleaned grease off, reassembled, stopped leaking.
you might have the really old one. I have a few on my route that have a little sticker on the side of the filter says to lube the o-ring or something like that but I still run them clean
Wow I bought my Hayward 3025 swimclear used and never had a drip at all. Only thing I replaced was the inside manifold. And am sure Hayward you can buy same clamp and use. I have replaced a few parts unions n air valve on top. Works like a champ.
After a filter clean, The top part of my filter lid won’t stay down (or close) all the way so it’s on top of the o ring. It keeps “springing” back up. How can I fix this so I can place my band clamp on my filter?
Good video. It's obvious the debris and condition of the o-ring was contributing to the water leaking. Having worked with high vacuum systems, I dealt with vacuum leaks and an o-ring's number one culprit with ANY type of leak (water, chemical or vacuum) is foreign material. The next is physical wear of the o-ring and/or its sealing surface. Clean the groove where the o-ring seats, use proper lube for the type of o-ring being installed, and replace with a NEW o-ring. They're generally pretty inexpensive, especially the widely used Viton o-rings (the black ones).
My poll is not leaking but throwing out sand. I replaced the lateral but still doing it. Got any ideal has done this since I got pool but getting worse.
Ohhh thats a big nasty job trying to find that hole. If all the laterals are new and you replaced the sand correctly (adding water prior to the sand so you don't break the new laterals) then you probably have a torn oring somewhere inside the filter or a cracked plastic piece maybe the standpipe etc. Unfortunately you have to take all the sand out and inspect everything to find the problem :(
I put lube on mine every time n no leaks n when I take off. I clean the lip n then clean the o-ring and relube it I use shop rags works good. I bought a used one ten years ago n still going strong. The cartridges I buy two sets and rotate them. They are cheap on amazon for good ones
Any tricks on getting the Pop Up housing to stop spraying water out after changing the o ring? It sprays water out unless I turn the water feature on, hence my pop ups aren’t doing their job.
That’s exactly what my Hayward is doing. I just cleaned the grids and the top lid, but not the bottom and the o ring. Will try that today even though I already ordered a new ring.
I have noticed that a small drip will go away in a week. If I have a small drip, I just move on, and check it next week. That is for a single drip every few seconds or slower.
I service pools and I always hate that drip. Especially on haywards. Happy to see we do the exact same thing. Setting the lid and moving it back and fourth defiantly helps before putting the clamp on. One trick I have learned is before I worry about the drip too much, I go ahead and add DE. For some reason the DE does get the drip to stop. Then if need I rotate the clamp Once more I do so. If it was up to me I’d have a world of only Pentair!!
I got a new o ring and a new clamp for mine. And it’s leaking worse. I cleaned the o ring because my service guy said you need to lube o ring, but I guess you don’t. Well I got done it didn’t leak so I shut it off. I thought let’s double check turned it back on and it started leaking bad.
@@sumnersmash7485 you definitely need to lube the o ring. You might want to try going with a silicone spray from boss products if the magic lube isnt doing the trick. Also use an impact driver not a hand tool.

Uhm so my filter has a tiny rust hole that sprays water close to the bottom. Is there any way I can patch it or jb weld it for a few months or is it a lost cause and I need a new one
Didn’t Hayward chg to part DEX2422Z2 a metal reinforced o ring for this problem. That looks like an aftermarket o ring or one that’s very old.A few important lessons when working on these PIA’s & the poster nailed it - clean the sections where the body and top filter connect, wipe down the o ring. Also tapping the metal band in place is IMPORTANT if it doesn’t pull evenly the top will not seat correctly & leaks like a mother ! The older they get the more problematic.
Thank you for this! I specifically followed the directions on the hayward swimclear that says to lube after cleaning and it started leaking like crazy. Today I found your video and cleaned all the lube off, and dirt and it's not leaking. Yay! You solved it.
Our pool man did everything you said NOT TO DO! Paid for new clamps (2) -didn't work, checked original clamp, and threads were broken on the bolt, he put oily lube on the o-ring, broke bottom manifold, -and then when we say, "let's just replace the container", he tells us, "Oh, I know a guy..." NO. I'll happily pay a real professional to install the new tank. 😡🤬😡🤬
After buying a house with an in ground swimming pool I realized I would rather prefer to go swim in the ocean with sharks and river with alligators in Florida than owning a pool !!! Maintaining a swimming pool is a real head ache.
This was soo helpful!!! Most videos I have watched and said to def put lube on. But makes more sense not to!! My 1 yr old Hayward cartridge filter is making a squeaking, squealing noise. I tried to release excess air from the air relief valve. Any ideas as to what’s wrong?? Thanks for the help!!! :) Please make more videos!! They are very helpful!!!!!!
Silicone lube does not "break down the rubber gasket". More likely it is the pool chemicals, age, and mishandling. Silicone lube has been shown to specifically preserve the integrity of rubber gaskets, so I would like to know what you base this statement on?
Dude just watch the video, try to see if it fixes your problem like everyone else does, no need to get into a philosophical debate over pool equipment.. smh
aladdin magic lube breaks down the o-ring, you'll get black o-ring residue crap all over your hands after that lube has been on it for a few months. The other lubes just cause dirt to stick to it which causes leaks.

You're the man. The drips stopped after cleaning the o-ring area. Finally a useful youtuber! Thanks brother!
Had the Hayward drip and did exactly as you said - just carefully cleaned the o-ring and mating surfaces. Cured the disease! No more drip. Thank you.

Thank you so much we cleaned it and now no dripping you saved us!
Thanks for this video. Cleaning the lip and seal worked like a charm.
Not adding silicon grease to the o-ring is just counter-intuitive. Did as you instructed and my leak is gone. Thank you!!!

the Hayward Drip!

So is it best to “NEVER” lube up filter o rings? Or any other 0-rings?

Wow 🤩 awesome 👏 best video by far Hayward drip is real 😂
I have a different model but I am going to try the same approach. Still the “Hayward Drip” happening. I have the Perflex DE filter.
That’s what I have too. Did this method work?
used these tricks on my leaking filter and now it runs leak free. THANKS for posting

Stephanie, how did it go?

yes indeed small drip usually will improve with time, I'll tell customers that all the time

I took it apart put it back together for the third time and it doesn’t leak. Need to make sure I wear a long sleeve next time. The fiber glass sucks

I think I shall buy a Pentair next time. On my second Hayward filter over a 20 year period and am tire of dealing with it.
This video helped me out!! Thanks!
wow thank you im going to do this!!!!!
Worked like a charm brother. If I ever meet you in real life, I'm gonna bake you a cake.
