Thanks for watching! As some have pointed out in the comments I did miss a few things so give it the comments a read through if you want to see what I might have missed! 5 key documentation is pretty spread out and scarce so I appreciate any corrections in the comments! :)
Still an amazing video. We are still learning new things about beatmania to this very day as there is so much uncovered and unexplored media or lore that has hardly left Japan or needs to be translated.
IIDX is more an evolution of the series, and yep, is where Konami invested time and efforts to keep the brand Beatmania alive. ( we got now IIDX 30th style ). I always have been a player of both Beatmania and a iidx player since 6th style arcade. Nowadays, being a nerd father of 46, i still play IIDX Infinitas ( the PC version )which has a monthly fee to pay for playing. Looking at the nuber of users using Paseli ( Konami currency ) i'd say the Brand Beatmania is more than alive. THe 5 keys died, to reborn as the 7 keys with IIDX. I still bring it in my Twitch streams nowadays and it is a pleasure.
To also note of 4thMIX was a Sound Director change as beatmania - beatmania 3rd had Reo Nagumo. From 4thMIX and to the series' death THE FINAL the sound director was changed to Takehiko Fujii more popularly known as SLAKE. (I'M FOR REAL, BLOCKS, SCREAM SQUAD) Also in 4thMIX was his music debut to BEMANI, SODA. Later in 7thMIX and THE FINAL, Osamu Mitigera would join SLAKE as another Sound Director of beatmania. SLAKE would not resume staff credits until beatmania IIDX 10th style meanwhile Osamu would not resume staffing a game until REFLECT BEAT groovin'!! Upper
So I watched few Japanese videos and here's some additional info (btw I'm Japanese): -The roots of beatmania was from prize game - beatmania was actually developed in the prize game division of Konami, and got the idea from another prize game which used sound & rhythm to catch the prizes -The reason why beatmania 2nd MIX was created quickly was because the 1st mix got an enormous amount of attention despite the scarcity of the machine throughout Japan, hence they needed to develop a new version ASAP before the crowd loses interest because of the lack of song variety in the 1st mix
As a guy who lived in japan in the early 00's and would watch in wonder as kids went absolutely H.A.M. on beatmania games its delightful to watch you kids pick it up.
These are some great videos!! I only more recently got into the rhythm gaming world but I love looking to the past to see where things came from. Unsurprisingly my favorite game and first real push into the genre was with IIDX followed shortly by Sound Voltex and now Pop'n Music. But IIDX is still my favorite :) I really need to spend some time with the original Beatmania game though.
12:05 it still exists, kind of! there’s a secret mode in every iidx game called “hazard” that you can access by hitting 2, 4, and 6 at the same time while hovering over free. in it, you’re guaranteed 4 songs, but if you break your combo it instantly fails the stage. it’s stressful, but kinda fun in my experience
I loved the video! It was super interesting to learn about how the classic beatmania franchise shaped rhythm games as a whole! If possible, I'd love if you could cover the classic series of GFDM, as it had a big impact on XG GFDM/GITADORA and Guitar Hero/Clone Hero.
but good thing is that the game is still being kept alive by the community through emulators like lunatic rave 2, QMS or beatoraja and of course, events like BOFU or BMS of Fighters are still being held
I wouldn't say that. Most BMS events are for 7k (iidx style) or 9k (popn style). I don't think anybody makes 5k (original beatmania style) charts anymore
Its crazy giw much better the charts in IIDX are thaj beatmania. I played beatmania when it was still current but as soon as IIDX came out I couldn't go back and play the old game again
I actually have all these games and a Japanese Playstation in my house now. They're my sister's and haven't been played for years, but they're all there. I remember hearing little things in pop music from Beatmania years after my sister and her boyfriend played it.
They shoulda tried not releasing a million versions every year and slow down a bit instead of suddenly stopping hahaha. I personally don't think e~emotion is a typo but who knows
Bold move to actively show your bed off in that first scene. So many people would be rude about you not having a bed frame, but I'm not insane so I think it's sweet
You forgot the most important thing added into 7th mix, it was the first time in 5 key beatmania you could have the note lanes separated like in iidx (EDIT) turns out i am a bit stupid, it was beatmania iii 6th mix that was the first with separate lanes, not beatmania 7th mix
I got to watch this because someone mentioned of plans to bring over IIDX in Queensland. Im working on persuading people to bring it back, but It will be tough given theres enough music games here. Beatmania IIDX will be hard to bring in...but I'm going to put some effort in.
Jokes on you, I play 1P side on IIDX but have zero issue with right side scratch on 5keys. I actually don't like center mode because the distance between the keys and turntable is too long (even worse on bm3, but manageable on a 5keys mini cab)
pretty sure 7 key players respect right side on the left, because that's the original. but as far as that goes, 1p side for the win. only time I'd ever use the right side is in japan.
I doubt even Ez2Dj had this kind of feature aside from maybe some radio/extra stage exclusive charts with absurd lifebar settings. The only one I can think of is BE rev A's extra stage which had what was essentially ddr's life4 lifebar
Thanks for watching! As some have pointed out in the comments I did miss a few things so give it the comments a read through if you want to see what I might have missed! 5 key documentation is pretty spread out and scarce so I appreciate any corrections in the comments! :)

this was a great watch. I'm not well versed with the original beatmania at all so it was an extremely interesting and educational watch
Same.

pointless top comment, sad
Hey, fancy seeing you here!

30th Style - Resident
Now we have 31 EPOLIS, and the upcoming 32 Pinky Crush

I got the immense privilege to play beatmania final at a convention last weekend, so the ending of this video got my teary-eyed
As a guy who lived in japan in the early 00's and would watch in wonder as kids went absolutely H.A.M. on beatmania games its delightful to watch you kids pick it up.

10:42 - IIDX 1st style came out before 4th mix
crap, you're right! Thought I double checked that date, nice catch!
@@losermanwins4338 don't feel too bad, Rinny the 16th made almost the exact same mistake in his history of Naoki Maeda. We're all human lol
Beatmania isn't dead it just evolve to IIDX
Yeah I mean it's like saying GuitarFreaks is dead because Gitadora uses 5 buttons instead of 3. It isn't, the game just changed.
Beatmania lives on longer for the next 20 years, who knows...

@@iamstylishaf12222 They do but only for beginners
perfect play was also in Hiphop mania complete mix 2
Its crazy giw much better the charts in IIDX are thaj beatmania. I played beatmania when it was still current but as soon as IIDX came out I couldn't go back and play the old game again
I might be *a bit* familiar with that DES-ROW song you mentioned XD
The "perfect play" feature in Korean 5th mix was also present in international releases of complete mix 2
I've heard people try to claim that Beatmania is currently more popular in Japan than Taiko no Tatsujin, which I have a hard time believing.
fiy IIDX has something sorta similar called hazard where any combo break insta fails you :)
Beatmania 1stmix technically has 13 songs, more than DDR first mix’s 9 ;)
Great video though, worth the watch
Thank you so much for this walk down memory lane, beatmania was a huge part of my growing up and it still holds a huge place in my heart.
I actually have all these games and a Japanese Playstation in my house now. They're my sister's and haven't been played for years, but they're all there. I remember hearing little things in pop music from Beatmania years after my sister and her boyfriend played it.
i see that cobalt flux in the background
Beatmania 4th Mix was my first cab I ever touched. Actually - - - the only cab i've touched.... :(
The all song code for 4th mix was fairly easy if you know it's taken from the song deep in you's at the chorus part.
Your channel is so good dude!!
jam jam reggae my dearly beloved
Well that's a video title I never thought I'd see!

If I recall correctly Fuck Konami came from Jim Sterling so that’s a pretty funny coincidence
Great videos, I love learning about rhythm games. Subbed!

rhythm Heaven is dead
no new game since 2016, 2015 in Japan
Jokes on you, I play 1P side on IIDX but have zero issue with right side scratch on 5keys. I actually don't like center mode because the distance between the keys and turntable is too long (even worse on bm3, but manageable on a 5keys mini cab)
Actually a little ironic the original dead but the crossover is still successful till now, version updates don't even get delayed more than 1 year
Aye that’s the round one in Las Vegas lmao
Babe wake up new losermanwins
pretty sure 7 key players respect right side on the left, because that's the original. but as far as that goes, 1p side for the win. only time I'd ever use the right side is in japan.
Beatmania isn't really a dead game, it still remains at the top of the charts at japan. But it is ONLY japan exclusive.
good video
Very nice video
You should do a video on Stellights!!
Love your enthusiasm and depth of content!
Bleep bloop comment in hopes your channel gets picked up by The Algorithm \(°∆°)/
Watched a video on beatmania by kkclue recently. I guess further down like iidx it became more.. Fun?
Please make a video about all ps2 beatmania
Nice vid, keep it up
Hey if its dead sell me that dj dao
12:23 is this a nod towards EZ2DJ?
(I'll never call it EZ2AC. Fuck Konami)
I doubt even Ez2Dj had this kind of feature aside from maybe some radio/extra stage exclusive charts with absurd lifebar settings. The only one I can think of is BE rev A's extra stage which had what was essentially ddr's life4 lifebar

Lmao, fugg komani
Oh My God💛. Do not miss out - Promo-SM!!!
This video gave me a seizure and i'm not even epileptic.
