This has to be the weirdest coaster I've seen in a long time. It has an identity crisis. Part dark ride, part log ride, part coaster and part beetleguese.

The one thing I remember from this ride was not actually in the ride itself, but in the queue. There was a video of this mime that instructed you how to be safe on the ride. He was everywhere...

I have a love hate relationship with roller coasters. At the beginning I’m like “I regret this and there’s no way to escape” but at the end I usually end up enjoying the ride.

same here. My hands and feet get almost too tense waiting for the ride and then, after the ride, I want to feel the speed again. But now, I gave up with that anxious feeling

It's sad how they got rid of the storyline of this amazing ride. The thing that makes me ride this ride now is it's music. People say the music is terrible but, I don't think so every time I get to the outside part I'm jamming.

Coaster Watch I think they're fixing it for the 2017 season, Sea World is one of my home parks and I think they are going to fix it, the ride is currently closed at the moment, it should open back up this month, however I was lucky enough to ride it when the statue was moving, it was very cool, the current state of it isn't very good, but fingers crossed that it's fixed for 2017

I absolutely love this ride. First time riding it you just think it's s single drop ride, but after that drop there is a roller coaster that completely took me by surprise.

I felt the same way when I first got on it as a kid I don’t really like roller coasters so it was a bad surprise for me

There was clear stagnate water on the lifts. Also they need a better way to incorporate the exit signs, they are kinda distracting
This version of the ride was so much better by far then what it is at the moment, back then, it was an incredible story of a mermaid turning into a siren with some incredible effects, now it's just a dumb musical ride through the drops and coaster elements and it takes away from the experience! #BringBackTheOldJTA
I could've sworn there was more to this ride! I kept thinking I was misremembering when I watched this vid.
I rode it a few weeks ago and I thought something was off from when I was a kid..... it's still pretty fun especially now that I have kids and get to laugh at the oh crap face they make when it drops
I rode it years ago, I think about 7 or 8 years ago. And I remember thinking it was kind of disjointed. Back then atlantis could be seen more due to lighting but it still felt really weird. A Mermaid tells you to come closer, that stupid sea horse thing popping up at spots in atlantis, mermaid gets angry and starts shapeshifting, then the green eyed gorgon thing lunges out at you which was a good jumpscare at least. But then after the splash we go back up, see what I think was a wrecked ship with the mermaid/gorgon thing laughing and the beetlejuice theme playing. To put it mildly I was confused.
ikr, the ride is so stupid now, no theme at all :/
Okay, I feel better. I rode this for the first time a year ago and spent most of the ride trying to figure out what was happening. What did that creepy sea horse have to do with, why did it go from happy people to screaming. Knowing it is missing parts and not that *I* missed parts makes me feel much better.
It's really disappointing to watch a ride/attraction just be abandoned and put on the back burner. I remember this ride being so much fun when I was younger. The speed of the roller coaster aspect made it feel like we were truly trying to escape from the evil siren. The ride was so full of life with it's use of dark ride magic like neon paints, projections, and fiber optics and the bigger special effects elements such as the giant siren lunging at you and the shaking chandelier that looked like it was falling on you, they just made the ride good! It's a real shame that instead of improving these elements with upgrades or something, they're just turned off and not bothered with. It's just sad because the ride is still popular as it is a water ride in a theme park in Orlando, it's so much fun on a hot summer day. They should really look into giving it some love

Went to Seaworld with girl scouts once, and they convinced me (who had never really been on a ""Thrill Ride"" before) to ride both this aND THE KRAKEN. While the kraken made me love roller coasters, this did nothing but emotionally scar me! :)

Man, I miss the storyline and the SFX. It made it so much funner… and when I was a lot younger, the park was about to close, and no one was in line for jta, so me and my dad got to ride it 3 more times in a row! So fun.

My God back in its day this was an amazing ride. Still could be if they brought back the story and improved it. Even with all the new parks going in and all the new additions in Orlando fixing this would really put sea world back on the map and give them a Disney quality attraction
Crazy to see how much they changed the ride now. It has no story, the Medusa is just a menacing statue, they made that second building scene before the drop, pitch black. It’s crazy

Is it okay even as it's disintegrated self? Is the new theming okay would you say with no Medusa? They could add more plants and decorations I'm sure if people approve of it, we want to preserve the ride if we can
I remember riding this when I was a kid and the ride hadn't been open long. It was actually maybe my favorite ride out of Disney and Universal at the time. I loved the theming so much and the second drop that has a roller coaster track was amazing to me. I rode it again many years later and was sad many of the effects were no longer working.
Alright, who complained and got this amazing ride tampered with? Just rode it yesterday, and none of the anamatronics were working. I thought it was a fluke, but the worker guy said it was gone "for a very long time". ☹️.
It's because of the Blackfish Documentary backlash. The park has been financially struggling, so they're cutting corners, which includes refurbishments.

@Zachary Khan They even changed the height of the drop. They changed The Rollercoaster Bit alot and it kept saying technical difficulties for every rider that rode it

This is such a fun ride! At first I expected the first plume to be the climax but then it offers a very fun (but short, indeed) roller coaster element. Definitely an amazing ride!

I have been on this ride, but I missed everything cause either the ride was "Not turned on" or I was busy dealing with a friend who was terrified. Loved, *LOVED* the drop
Oh yes I remember this ride i actually miss the story version also funny thing when I was little I went to seaworld Orlando I thought this was the little mermaid ride but I guess not. Also fun fact the story was actually at the begging The door opens and a fisherman appears holding a golden seahorse and says “My dear Hermès show them the way!!” And door closes as a beautiful music while sparkling stars reach ur way and u go into a sea life and a statue mermaid sitting comes up as a projection gose on and a mermaid name allura comes to you and says “welcome freinds don’t be afraid come closer let us explore Atlantis” and Hermès the seahorse pops out on a water fountain and then another projection comes on a fountain and alluras cgi face comes up and says “now you’ve done it puny little pony your freinds are no welcome here” and snakes comes out of her hair and her eyes glow green and then Hermès pops out in a pot scared. And then allura said “what’s happening oh no” then flashing strobe lights flash at the Medusa figure that pops out at you. And then green strobe looks at you turns off when the doors opens.
This is so much.. better than the update.
I was there when it opened 20 years ago. I remember being blown away by this ride I had never been on anything like it before. It has stood the test of time.

Rode this on Sunday and while still a fun ride (mostly because of the drops and coaster section) I'm sad all the storyline and audio is gone!
Lol did any one notice that he was the only one on the ride because when he looked back I saw no one in the seats besides him...

This ride is so great!! The drop feels like your falling for so long
Seaworld has ruined this ride. I went there on summer break and rode this. The Medusa statue isnt even there anymore, nor is any of the 3d images of the people. All they have now is legit small spots of water that shoot out at you and the old buildings with flashing colorful lights.

I swear I cursed the shit out of me.. this was like my first big ride and I counted how many seconds the drop was so I knew and then I went on and immediately regretted it.. I tried to jump out of the line and ride but my friend made me go. After the drop there was like a whole bother coaster and that was when I really flipped.

Man i loved this ride. Been there in 2001. Man im growing old. I cant see why ppl complain about getting wet in a water attraction??? Isnt that the whole point. Its sad to read that the show/story Isnt there anymore... ive been to the efteling in the netherlands, they have an acttraction like this called De Vliegende Hollander. It made me remember this ride on my holiday. Good old times

The flying dutchman in the Efteling in the Netherlands excecuted this type of rollercoaster perfectly.
I went on this last weekend. It's practically a shell of its' former self. My husband had no idea it was much better till I showed him this. I even had to point out the sea witch (What I called her). They don't even light the eyes anymore.

When I went, there was no lights at all and it was raining so literally directly before the second drop we got stuck and me and my friends were so creeped out..
This ride ruined my trip to America. I went on it and it terrified me to the point that I wouldn't go on any rides the entire trip after. I was like 7.
I love this ride so much.... I love all the rides i have been to Disney world.... I still want to go again this time with my little boy

When I was 11 years old on my first trip to SeaWorld Orlando, I was too scared to ride Journey to Atlantis and Kraken, and in 2005 these were the only thrill rides in the park. I returned nearly 20 years later and rode all 5 coasters (the 6th, Penguin Trek was and still is? under construction), Infinity Falls, and Journey To Atlantis. Looking back on it, I can't believe I was scared of Journey to Atlantis as a child. Now, I went in blind and expected it to be like Splash Mountain but was pleasantly surprised it had some coaster elements, was a fairly unique ride, and the drop wasn't that big of a deal. But I could tell time hasn't been kind to the ride after over 25 years - it appears to have had more effects that stopped working or were removed, there were parts of the track that looked like it might have been underwater at some point and now felt like the boat was riding in a drained pool. And I notice some small areas that were literal crumbling away, like some plaster work had come off and I could see the steel mesh and frames underneath and definitely didn't feel like part of the theming, but straight up disrepair. The ride was missing something and this video confirms to me that it did have more effects and something of a story because when I rode it there wasn't much of a plot to the ride - just thrill. Also I found the way the boats drained water was kind of weird - like on the inclines it appeared to have some drainage that would prevent the water from simply rolling down inside the boat but didn't work properly? In any case this was a fun ride and I hope it does get some TLC because it was a bit rough, tired looking, and dare I say lifeless? from my first impressions.
