- Another denim skirt!, this time, it’s the Sally Jean skirt from Style Arc. I am sharing how to sew the neatest curved waistband ever using a a technique I like to call "the reverse method". A step by step tutorial will encourage you to sew patterns with this feature! Also, a comparison between both denim skirts I batched sewed: The Danube (Itch to Stitch) and the Sally (Style Arc).

I really like your reverse method. Thanks for teaching it! I would not have thought of it.
hi karina wow i keep learning thank for sharing your talent with us i love the skirt oh wow so happy u showed what to do with that foot thats great i could really use that i have all these different feet and i never use them because i dont know how to use them
Thanks so much 😊
I certainly will try the reverse method of sewing the waistbsnd.. I don't have to fear that my stitch will veer off course. Thanks for sharing your tips.
I’m happy to share. Thank you so much for watching :)
Really showed how to make a wait band and it has relay helped me as I am doing one without instructions. I watched the video twice and I link I am ready to sew up the skirt now. thank you.
As always lovely outcome 🙂🏴
Thank you so much 😊
And again I learned something very important: to stabilize the top of a curved waistband. I have a stretched out waistband and now I understand why this happened and how to fix it. It won’t happen again. Thanks a lot!
I used to always interface both inner and outer waistbands to avoid the problem but they were stiff and bulky. This is so much nicer :)
Ah the infamous gray skirt in your cardie video! Gorgeous ... perfect fit. It really does go with everything! Thanks for the valuable tips and tricks. Your channel is SO unique and essential for anyone who sews garments. Thanks so much! 🌺🌺🌺
Thank you so much 😊. Your encouragement means a lot :)

Great tips for constructing waistbands, this will be my new way to do a waistband. Thanks
Yay! You’ll really enjoy them :)
Thank you! I will try this reverse waistband on my next waistband. I am sewing now with my first Style Arc patterns. The instructions are brief, not "holding your hand". The style and details are very nice.
They are great patterns in my opinion and less hand holding has the benefits of challenging our minds to think a little bit more 😄.
I love how you did the waistband in reverse!
Thank you so much 😊
Thank you for the critique of the patterns; very useful. I loved that you also named the tops that you paired it with, I have a couple of those that I will now look at again!
I have a few sneaky RTW too 😄. The ones I buy are the ones I want to recreate and that I can’t see a pattern for them :)
Really nice, it appears blue when you paired it with blue blouses. Then charcoal grey when paired with the other colors. Really pretty.
I really like that feature of this fabric, it blends into whatever I wear on the top :)
I love your attention to detail 💕
Thank you so much 😊
I love your honest and comprehensive review and comparison of these two patterns! Great waistband tutorial and tips. I really like that you showed your skirt styled with several different tops at the end! Sooo pretty!
It’s because it goes with everything 😄. Love that.
Karina, like always, you are great.
Thank you so much 😍😍
I love the look of selvedges - I cut them off and save them for use in projects. Great video!
Yup! Great stuff, not bulky and otherwise is wasted :)
Great fit, Great instructions on the waistband!!! It will be a skirt that you can wear a lot, and be comfortable. xxx
It goes with every single one of my tops :)
OMG! I love love love your accent!!!
Thank you so much 😊. It’s a very mixed one because I’ve lived in many English speaking countries:)
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles I spent the whole video trying to guess! 😅
Hi Karina! This video was sooo helpful! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!❤️❤️❤️
I’m glad you liked it :)
I really appreciate your detailed reviews. :-)
Thank you so much 😊. I’m so glad you do.
Can't wait to cut out my Danube Jean Skirt! After the skirt I'll be making the Eddystone Jeans!!
I did the Coca cola wash on my 4 yds of denim and it did soften the denim nicely.
I'm excited to try the reverse waistband method. Your skirts turned out nice!!
Soft denim is so nice to work with. I’m excited for you 😃
I think we should called it the "Karina Waistband Method" so it is clear who developed the technique. :-) Love all your tips and explanations!
Oh I couldn’t name a technique after myself 😄. I’m sure others have figured out this method too :)
thank you! and that's salvage twill tape is brilliant
love the "reverse" waistband method
Thank you so much 😊
Excellent, I refer to your videos a lot instruction are s9 well d9ne!
Glad you like them!
Great topic! Thanks for these tips!
You’re very welcome 😉
Hi Marina
Thanks for sharing. Love your waistband secrets. Not sure when this was posted, regardless, I learn something new. Now I need to make a skirt.
Thanks again
Hope Brazil will open soon. Considering going shopping for material in your area. Blessings
It was posted and hour ago ;)
I’ve done something similar with my waistbands. I sew a guide stitch along the top edge of the upper edges. Then I sew both inner and outer waistbands to the body. Then topstitch to close the top.
I’ve done that with straight waistbands before too :)
Beautiful skirt👍
Thanks for watching 😊.
Hi Karina great video! Where did you get the adjustable stitch in the ditch foot did it come with your machine or did you buy it on line?
I bought it separately. It’s a blind hem foot and it has an L on it.
I really enjoyed this video as I enjoy all of them. I am a bit disappointed because I was waiting for this skirt video after watching the Danube one and being slightly older thought I would prefer the slight A line rather than the straight with slits option. The bonus being your use of stretch denim for the A-line too. I am 38” waist and 44” hip so wondering firstly if I will be able to print one size of the Sally and secondly whether I have sufficient knowledge to tackle this pattern. I consider myself intermediate level but like to have prompts of which order to do things as sometimes that is crucial. I love your precision and have learned so much from you. Thank you Karina. Stay safe. Hazel
This body measurements chart seems to be drafted with a 9” waist/hip difference. In your case, having a pattern with layers would help blend from the waist into a smaller size at the hip. You can make a straight skirt A lined and eliminate the slits. Draw a mark about 1” away from the side seam, at the hem of the skirt and blend that line into the hip level of the skirt. Then round out the hem at the sides a tad and voila :) an A line skirt :)
The Sally had a few little diagrams and a lot of words. I’m mainly concerned about the zipper because there was no information at all.
Thank you for the helpful advice on adapting the pattern to A line. I have a book on order about making jeans so zip should be well documented in that one for me at least. Thanks again. Hazel
I do my bands in reverse. Gives a better neater finish in my opinion. I also do collar stands in a different way to patterns.
Yup me too. Converted to reverse ages ago and sewing is so much better. I also do my collars a tad different :)
I do love the reverse method. It works so much better and avoids under stitching. Just need to remember to think in reverse. It goes against my thinking 🤦🏾♀️
I'm an experienced sewer and have had a lot of success with Style Arc patterns for dresses and tops - I've not made any of their skirts yet. My nemisis seems to be their trouser patterns - the block they use doesn't work for me at all. I've tried the Sadie and Kew pants and both have been 'gardening only' garments - I wouldn't go out in the street in them! I'm hoping your series of videos on pants fitting will help me adjust their patterns properly - I like the designs very much but the block just doesn't work for my body. Have you done any videos on Style Arc pants patterns? I'd love to know if you've had similar issues.
Love your videos. Which skirt do you prefer?
I love them both. I prefer the zipper from the Sally. The rest of the features are pretty even :)
Thank you for the information on Style Arc patterns. I love this skirt. I am going to make a curved waistband on jeans that did not come wit one. Do you have to make any changes to the top of the pant?
No you don’t change the pant legs at all. It’s just the waistband.
Is the whole waistband interfaced?
No part of the waistband is interfaced. The wrong side of the denim is light color.
How do you find Style Arc patterns directions. I heard they aren’t very good.
They are fine for me. They sure aren’t trying to teach how to sew and techniques. I did mention my opinion. They are not for new sewists.
It's ridiculous - I have the Sally Jean Skirt pattern and decided not to print it out and make it because I couldn't be bothered with all the sticking together. So, I bought another skirt pattern from one of the 'big 4' companies and it also has a curved waistband but in three parts (?). Very frustrating. My question is which side of the curve is to be attached to the skirt? The smaller or the larger? I've tried both ways and am totally stumped. Help!!
The longer side is sewn to the waistline of the skirt. The shorter end of the curve will end up on the top of the waistband.
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles Thank you so much, Karina. As always. you're a goldmine of information.
Apologies for your incorrect name Karina. Self correction of else. Not sure
