Captain Kangaroo was a morning children's show in the 60s and 70s
I loved Captain Kangaroo
@@scotthuish67 Mr. Moose was cool.
Loved Capt Kangaroo
Began in the 50's.
It started in 1955 and ran until 1984.
The Statler Brothers were discovered by Johnny Cash and were part of his touring group in the 1960’s/early 70’s. They recorded a song later called “We Got Payed By Cash”
......and would have done it all for free......
I love this song, and have since a young age. It's such a dated song, that it may not make sense to young folks. This song was before video games and personal computers, when television went off air at midnight and came back on at 5am with little kids shows, when playing solitaire meant real playing cards, and sometimes the deck was short a card. Strange times to contemplate, from now. Just for clarity, it's actually a sad song. The premise is that he's run into his ex and she's expressing concern for him, and he's telling her he's fine even though he's really not fine.
Tasha really needs to read this.too many time the younger generation hears a song and doesn't get it.
went right over her head.
I always thought it was about a guy in an institution (nut house).
This is my retirement theme song. Finally enjoying my adult life.
Flowers on the wall. The most happy upbeat song about crippling depression ever......
This song was featured in Pulp Fiction in a scene with Bruce Willis. One year later, Bruce mentioned he was “smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo” in Die Hard with a Vengeance.
He's gone crazy, living in a rubber room lol.
As others have said, Captain Kangaroo was a (low-key) kids' show - the point here is that he's been playing solitaire till dawn, when the TV stations started their day, and Captain Kangaroo would have been one of the first shows on in the morning. I think I was just past the age of watching Captain Kangaroo when this song came out, so I appreciated the shout-out ... !
One of the advantages of being born in the 1950's is you understand all the references in a Statler Brothers song. Of course having been able to see them live on Tv performing all their wonderful hits is another.
Before Sesame Street, there was Captain Kangaroo.
I about spat out my coffee when she said she had no idea who Captain Kangaroo was. OH MY GOODNESS. lol I knew the show well.
Always so impressed with the music you choose to cover. I mean, it seems there's a thing lately or everybody doing reactions is doing it exactly the same thing. It comes in waves and they all copy each other and I don't get it. Angelina Jordan, Falling in Reverse, Dolly Parton, on and on it goes and it's all good stuff it's just weird and yet here you are covering really cool off the radar stuff that is really incredibly great music.
This was popular when I was young, and yeah man in the late sixties and early seventies I grew up watching the children's show Captain Kangaroo, with Mr. Green Jeans and the moose and everything and the ping-pong balls falling down and all that stuff.
But this is such a great song and I love The Statler Brothers harmonies of course as always, but I love the fact that it's got that acoustic bass plunking away, which we miss so much in modern music and I would also say, a little wrinkle on your listing off of the things you liked about it, playing Solitaire - well if you remember, he actually says I'm playing Solitaire with a deck of 51, think about it. It's going to be a frustrating experience if you're serious about the game, but he's not; he's just trying to bide his time and get by. 😀
❤
He’s playing solitaire with a deck of 51 cards , but there’s 52 cards in a deck so he will never win.
Wow! Haven’t heard this in years!! Fun song!! Thanks Tasha! 😅
You need to react to Eric Weatherly’s version of “Flowers on the Wall”
Home Free did a great cover of this
Man this takes me back to jr high and high school. I used to have the cassette tape of the album this song was from. ❤
I knew a different version growing up by one hit wonder Eric heatherly
This group is still my mom’s fever dream. Before my mom retired, Statler was her password.
Some more Statler Brothers you should check out- "I'll Go To My Grave Loving You", "Carry Me Back", "Elizabeth", Guilty", "My Only Love", "One Size Fits All"...
That song was old school when i first heard it, as a child....I ❤ the Statler Bros 😊
Captain Kangaroo was a kids show when i was little I'm about to turn 58 next month so that's why you never heard of it youngun.
Hmm. She completely missed the irony in this song; nevertheless, a very understandable interpretation for a person of her generation.
Captain Kangaroo is a badass.
He sure was … the haircut
Mind your business! 🤣 Fun one, Tasha. Brings back the memories. ❤
Love the group. Song takes me back to my childhood.
I've always had my theory that this song is about his friends visiting him in a mental hospital.
*Countin' flowers on the wall* : In the old days, mental patients were put into padded rooms. The little buttons that attached the padding would push it in and it looked like little flowers.
*Playin' solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51* : He's "not playing with a fell deck" with is a euphonism for being crazy and he's playing solitaire since he's alone in his room/cell.
*... anyway, my eyes are not accustomed to this light* : Mental patients were kept in windowless rooms.
*My shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete* : He never got to leave his padded room.
Wow. This is such a memory! I haven't heard this song in 40 years.
Home Free has done a wonderful cover of this song. Check it out on their YT channel sometime.
Solitaire with a missing card (deck of 51) is a futile game. You can never win…
I loved “Flowers On The Wall” when I was a teen - still do. I lived in NYC where one seldom heard country music on the radio but I ran to buy this 45 - which I still have. Great song.
Idk off u caught: "Playing Solitaire 'till one, with a deck of 51"
Decks of cards have 52; it's futile, but he's got something to do: "Well, sh*t, I lost again.. I'll have to start over.."😂❤✝
Wonder how many people caught the deck of 51? A deck has 52.
It's great to see the diversity and appreciation of this music. These men originally started as singing old gospel tunes. They are from Staunton Virginia in the mountains of the Blue Ridge. I am 115 miles from that small gorgeous town .
It's understandable that you never heard of Captain Kangaroo. That show rarely gets mentioned to the point where if any young people does know, I'd be shocked. So far, anyway.
I've always loved this song since my teens in the 70's and 80's, and as I now know I'm a far-out introvert, I can understand why! But the very idea should have been very strange back back when it was released. Still, very many must have felt just as attracted to the text as those who only reacted to the wonderful melody.
Mr Green jeans Captain kangaroo sidekick
Interesting take on this song. Thanks for your perspective Tasha.
You' re making me laugh anout his parents. 😂😂 It's a Breakup Song. His girlfriend left him. I loved Captain Kangaroo. People my age & older watched this show every morning & then before going to school. My brothers watched Sesame Street. Any song by The Statler Brothers is great. Want a laugh, listen to;
"We got paid by Cash"
"You can't have your Kate & Edith too"
Or look up The Statler Brothers doing "Lester 'Roadhog' Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys" You will die laughing. TEST....TEST....Alright, mighty fine, mighty fine. Each & everynite at the Johnny McBrown High School. I wish they hadn't done that.😁
Captain Kangaroo, his co host Mr Greene Jeans and Lee Marvin all served in the Marines during wwii.
I think it's more about a guy breaking up with his girl. No one except kids who grew up in the 60,s know who Captain Kangaroo was. lol
Captain Kangaroo is a children's show from the 60s and 70s that was on early morning on week days ... the song is actually about a guy talking to his ex [presumably she broke it off and is worried that he took it hard]
I love the Statler Brothers and this song, but you should listen to it as if a guy meets a girl who dumped him and he's trying to convince her and himself that he's ok. He really is doing nothing, so he has time to count flowers on wallpaper, he plays solitaire with only 51 cards, when a deck should have 52, meaning he can never win, Captain Kangaroo is a kids tv show, so he's really upset by her leaving, but he's putting a brave face on for her.
Captain kangaroo and Mr. Green jeans was I early morning show like sesame Street back in the 60's.
He is telling his x girlfriend he doesn't miss her and he is not depressed. But then goes on to explain his depressed behaviors.
We had four channels on television and they typically shut down at midnight. We turned on the tv in the morning and there was Captain Kangaroo!
You have to check out theirs songs Too Much On My Heart and More Then A Name On A Wall
Yes sweetie two of their best. These Virginia boys could sing. No Hun he's telling his ex what all he's doing.
You should listen to "Elizabeth" by the Statlers. It is beautiful!
I'm from Belarus and i love Statler Brothers)
It means the guy is bored out of his head ,He is a Swinger'' Dress up in Tails in front of the mirror , wishes there was someplace to go playing cards , and smoking cigs
These guys are from Staunton Va , I meet one of these guys Song tells it al Buy the way , Who is this captain kangaroo , Joking .
Such a cool song. Great reaction
Flowers On the Wall is a song about man who's love left him. He just wants to be left alone.
Tasha listen to Marty Robins Don’t Worry it’s a great song you’ll like it.
HOME FREE DID FLOWES ON THE WALL DURING LOCK DOWN
He had gone crazy. In an institute thus reference to the concrete floor and going back to his room.
He's an open minded free spirited person to where he's so smooth that he can beat solitaire with 51 cards. It has to do with confidence!
Hes in a mental hospital
Its about being in a mental asylum
A guy in looney bin. I think
That was great! I 7sed to watch Captain Kangaroo on TV as a kid. You should check out the episode where he had a young Dolly Parton on as his guest.
The lord blesses those who are content , don’t pull down on others and do there work.
I used to go to school with Buck Owen's son , we would hang out at their house,
We rented from a minor country star as well,
I listened to this song with a transistor radio with one ear piece,
It's always been a favorite song
this is a *very* sad song about a broken man who lost the love of his life and is now just "waiting to die" essentially, while also not willing to admit that that's all he is doing.
Man in loony bin
Captain kangaroo always bothered me.
which isone thing tasha jackson has never done. i used to travel through georgia to visit my grandparents in florida from the time i was 7 and loved atlanta especially. living in florida in the early 2000's was less cool..i enjoy your videos. you turned out well in all ways....
a REAL tear jerker....THE WALL by the Statler Bros. about the Viet Nam war memorial...get the tissues ready.
I was only 7 when this song came out and flooded the airwaves. Playing on the radio, TV, and jukeboxes. Captain Kangaroo was a a kids show on CBS from '55-'84.
there are 52 cards in a deck of cards
Which is why he's playing till dawn trying to win a hand
Home Free did a great cover of this during lockdown and as a tribute to Harold Reid, who was the bass singer. Captain Kangaroo was a kids show in the 60's and 70's always enjoy your reactions
Didn't think I'd heard this before til it got to the chorus...not sure where I've heard it but you are so right...LOL...millennials theme song!
Glad to hear this again! Thanks Littl' Lady! Glad ya enjoy it too✌️🫂🤪🇺🇸🐍
HE IS IN A MENTAL INSTITUTION!!!
Oh, "playing with a deck of 51" means deck missing card! 52 in deck, 54 with Jokers!!✌️🫂🐍
Whoever made the Scrolls couldn’t spell Brothers or flowers
This is the only top 40 song that mentions Captain Kangaroo.
