    Sheffield United have applied for planning permission to add 5,400 seats to the South Stand. The stand which currently seats 7,500 fans would if the scheme goes ahead seat just under 13,000. Like the recently extended Main Stand at Anfield Liverpool, this would be achieved by building behind and above the existing stand, adding an additional tier.

    These impressions of Bramall Lane stadium improvements aren't new. They first appeared about 5/6 years ago. But it was said that no ground expansion would take place until such time as Sheffield United had achieved Premier league status - AND STAYED THERE. Also, another problem is that the design as shown in the film is - I think - one envisaged by a company called Scarborough Holdings - a company owned by Kevin McCabe. Kevin McCabe formerly owned the club, but entered into joint ownership with a Saudi Prince. The relationship went sour and ended up in court, with the Prince being given full ownership. I may be wrong but I can't see McCabe and Scarborough Holdings having any further interest in the stadium expansion, so if at some point in the future it is expanded, it could look quite different to the one shown in the video.

    The current ground is too small, apart from restricted view it was an home sell out for over half the matches in the Championship last season and every game will be sold out in the Premier league. Think a 36K minimum capacity is needed but the 41.2K above would still sell out for the big games. The beauty about the designs above is that current capacity will hardly be effected because both stands build on the back of the current stands, like what they did at Anfield, with their centenary stand and the Anfield Road away stand.

    Interesting they aren't replacing the bramall lane stand, extremely cramped with very little legroom in there at the moment, and quite dated in general. Believe it's an early 60's stand (not a blades fan so feel free to correct me just speaking from my experience as an away fan)

    • @chrisaskin6144
      @chrisaskin6144 2 года назад +3

      No, you're 100% correct. The Bramall Lane stand is really overdue being replaced/modernised, as a structure it's depth is very shallow and looks out of proportion to it's height. The problem is though, that Bramall Lane itself runs directly behind it. Which makes expansion of the BL stand virtually impossible. They're faced with two options: move the whole stadium eastwards thus making more space for a new deeper stand - clearly a non starter, or move Bramall Lane thoroughfare a number of yards westwards around the ground to increase the space. But the cost in doing that would be mega and no doubt fall to SUFC before they'd even costed the replacement of the stand itself. There's also the City Council itself and they would need to be happy for it to go ahead, and I shouldn't think they would be. There are also businesses across the road from the football ground which I daresay would be less than happy about it.

    Looks an impressive design piece but what’s the point if the club cannot regularly fill the existing stadium? In a two big club city both have fan potential capacity limits of about 35k.

    • @ScottBlade1889
      @ScottBlade1889 2 года назад

      Yeah, I kind of agree.
      I think 35k would be about right for us in the prem but I can't see a point in the future where we'll ever need 40k+.You only have to look at Hillsborough across the city to see the effect it has on the atmosphere playing in a stadium that is too big for you. Wednesday have like 20,000 empty seats every week.

    • @stevecooper5419
      @stevecooper5419 Год назад

      @@ScottBlade1889 if it was increased to say 38,000 we could fill it in Premier league against about 8 or 9 teams with large away following by giving them that whole away end. Top tier & bottom.

    • @ScottBlade1889
      @ScottBlade1889 Год назад

      @@stevecooper5419Giving both tiers to away fans wouldn't actually be a bad idea to be honest if the expansion happens. I always felt that bigger away followings used to help the atmosphere anyway, by that I mean in the sense that it would spark a reaction from our fans. That being said I still think 35k would be about right for us. We'd need to consolidate ourselves as a top half Prem team in order to start pulling 38k crowds imo.

    The only part that is planned, is to renew the Kop end, Bramall Lane can't be extended because of the road behind it, and to be honest, anything else would make it lose its charm as the world's oldest professional football stadium.
