    Update: The xTool D1 now supports Lightburn which was my biggest negative from the machine. Overall this is my favorite laser diode even at a higher price point than others.

      There are 2 versions of Lightburn, which would I need, GCode or DSP?

    • @makeorbreakshop

      @@JamesGames. its more like 2 different licenses, which open up support to DSP based or Gcode based machines. For the D1 one though you'll want the Gcode version.

    I think it would be very informative if you gave the engrave/cut times. I've owned a diode and co2 laser now and I think some people would find it helpful to know how long it takes to achieve a finished product. I'm not In the market for another one currently, I'm working more with plasma, but a coworker talked about this so I thought I'd check it out. Seems pretty nice and the creature comforts seem really nice specifically the integrated focusing jig.

  • @jillthomas6975
    @jillthomas6975 2 года назад +1

    watched several of you videos, but not one on engraving acrylic. I know you have to have something underneath the acrylic so the lazer does not just pass through. My question is some acrylic blanks have colored protective coverings, some blue heavy plastic and some a brown cardboard looking color. If you just remove one side of the of the covering are those backing colors solid enough to keep the lazer from passing through?

    I need a laser to permanently apply text to stainless steel and brass coupons, none larger than 100mm. There will be hundreds of them, each different. The stainless will need to withstand permanent exposure to the harshest sun and wind for years at a time. When you say this machine will mark metal, does that mean it will be satisfactory for my needs or do I need to think fiber lasers?

    • @jamespelt3651
      @jamespelt3651 2 года назад

      Any diode laser will as you say, mark on stainless steel, not truly engrave the metal. Having said that, yes the mark is permanent. I expect it will do what you ask of it right out of the box. However, if you really want to ensure a dark solid permanent mark, I suggest you use a laser marking spray. (Search Amazon) it is expensive at about $60 for a 12 oz spray can, but in your case I think it will be more than work it.

    • @makeorbreakshop
      @makeorbreakshop  3 года назад +3

      Most people will mod an air assist with a cooper tube attached to the side of the laser head that then attaches to rubber tubbing and finally a compressor. So the air doesn't go through the actual laser module is just is coming in from the side.

    Would you say this is better than the laserpecker? I work with leather (boxing gloves) and would like to start engraving on them. Which of the two would you recommend?

    • @makeorbreakshop
      @makeorbreakshop  3 года назад +3

      The laserpecker is a different style diode laser. It moves the laser beam with a glavo, which is a mirror that moves the redirect the beam, meaning that it is faster but teh overall work area is pretty small. If your working with gloves the Laserpecker might give you enough work area to engrave but it could be tight. I would lean towards something like this since its way more flexible in terms of having higher laser power as well as a pretty big work area.

    Can I import illustrator files into this software? So do all the editing in illustrator, import, then print as is?

    Great review. What's the downside of this laser's software compared to lightburn.

    • @makeorbreakshop

      Their software is actually pretty good, you can do pretty much everything you need. The design tools are pretty simple so if you mostly importing images it shouldn’t be a huge deal. The big thing is just flexibility, other software has features you might want down the road so having the option to use it would be nice

    What do you use underneath the project to protect your table? Also I'm so glad you reviewed the D1, you are by far the best laser reviewer. I purchased the D1 but I haven't gotten it yet.

      Glad the review helped! Mine machines I usually just sitting on a work table with a MDF top that I wound up replacing every now and then since I also do woodworking as well and they get pretty banged up. But I have seen people use hard surfaces like granite to add some protection between the laser and the table.

      Waiting on mine as well. Currently have an Ortur LM2, I use a ceramic tile I bought from Lowes to protect the table under the laser cutter. There's no way the stone would catch fire and its cheap.

    I think a a k40 with a couple of little mods would be a much better alternative?

    • @makeorbreakshop
      @makeorbreakshop  3 года назад +3

      Yeh the K40 is probably the most interesting comparison. The biggest benefit you get going the K40 route is you move from diode to CO2 which means you get WAY more power (40W vs 10W). But you also get all the drawbacks in that is more heavy, less portable, takes up more space, needs water/compressor attached and has a much smaller work area. It really depends on the types of stuff you want to make. If you mostly want to do engraving that I would stick with the D1 or something from Ortur. If you really want to laser cut, then a CO2 machine is going to be your best bet.

    Will you be doing a review of the M1? I would like to purchase one of these two to start a home business, however I can't make a decision. I am hoping your review will assist me with a final decision.
