Seriously, your reactions are EXACTLY the way I reacted to these movies as a child in the theaters! I was ASTONISHED at what I saw on the big screens. At the time, the technology was cutting edge, and the story is just fantastic!!

I laughed out loud and so loud because I did not expect it...... 31:10.... you made a "that was she said joke!!!!?" or maybe what should be a "that's what she never says" joke. What made me laugh so loud is because you said as a seemingly automatic reflex, that I'm not sure you knew you even said it! Lol. Bravo!🤣🤣🤣

Pacing issues aside (yes, I stand by that assessment of ESB), I do like Luke's character arc in this film. Many of the traits he displayed in the previous film (natural compassion, impulsiveness, acting on emotion) that previously helped him end up biting him in the rear and setting him up for failure repeatedly in this film.
His impatience led to him failing Yoda's initial test of character, his commitment to a specific way of thinking kept him from getting his X-Wing out of the swamp, and his natural compassion for his friends overrode any rational thought over the possibility that he was being lured. His only major successes in this film occur when he's in his element (flying), and it wasn't until _after_ the reveal that he refused to let his emotions get the better of him, resulting in him turning down Vader's offer.

Keep in mind that the only versions of these movies available are the Special Editions, which have had some of the special visual effects updated with newer technology, though most of the original effects are still in them. The first film had the smallest budget so it had the fewest alterations made to it. This film had a bigger budget, so it has far fewer changes in it, and what changes there are mostly add to the film.
This film takes place 3 years after Ep.4, and the next film takes place one year later.

Thank you so much for your reactions/ reviews! I have a LONG answer your question "what was it like when they came out?" So skip to the last couple of sentences if you don't want to read, otherwise... I would say in my home town, there was a movie theater with ONE screen. On Friday or Saturday nights, if you drove by, the younger people might hang around the parking lot talking, making something of a "crowd", but you'd only see a line of a half dozen people buying tickets at the box office at any given time for a really big movie with a big-name star.
And then, Star Wars came out. I was 3 years old. Originally it was NOT called Episode IV: A New Hope, it was just Star Wars, and the opening scrawl was simply an homage to the old Flash Gordon serials that opened the same way. George added Episode IV to the opening scrawl for the re-release the following year, with the announcement of Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back - and suddenly, there were lines down the street all over again. It was a cultural phenomenon. It wasn't strictly for sci-fi nerds, it was for everyone. ANYONE could watch these films and marvel at SOMETHING about them; the music, the fx, the archetypes, the strong female lead, the religious overtones, the unique mix of eastern and western influences - cowboys and samurai and World War II movies and alien monsters, etc. It was beyond belief how every aspect seemed to resonate with somebody somewhere. Churches could put out a sign saying, We're going to talk about Star Wars this Sunday, and attendence would skyrocket. The legend of Lucas asking for the "worthless" merchandizing rights and making more money than the gods by putting a "Star Wars" label on every pencil and gadget was making entreprenuers weep with envy. I ate a cereal called C-3PO's once, with milk that had blue food coloring added. It was incredible.
Watch a movie called Logan's Run to understand what visual fx looked like before Star Wars, and you'll understand why nobody (except for "sci-fi nerds") liked science fiction movies before 1977. With rare exceptions like a few "flying saucer" films from the 1950's (Forbidden Planet, The Thing from Another World, etc.) sci-fi movies rarely got made with big budgets or by big-name talent. Planet of the Apes was a rare exception in the 1960's, having been written by The Twilight Zone's Rod Serling, and even though Logan's Run was a moderate success, sci-fi films were generally hard to watch because generally they looked like sh!t. The space ships looked like toys. Robots were shiny trash cans. 2001: A Space Odyssey was photo-realistic though - and got a lot of attention for it - but it was an "art" film, and suddenly, Star Wars was family-friendly, sugar-coated Flash Gordon-style entertainment, only in color, and photo-real. It went off like a bomb, and showed the world that anything was possible if you knew how to make the fx "special."
Jaws and Close Encounters had come out prior to Star Wars though, and they also generated lines around the block, thus the term "blockbuster" came into being, and studios and investors instantly realized that they didn't want to make merely "profitable" films, they wanted BLOCKBUSTER revenues every time, so corporations started buying up studios and risking BIG money on Star Wars ripoffs. Sir Ridley Scott was making movies like The Duel, saw Star Wars and said, "What am I doing?" So he made Alien, and Blade Runner. James Cameron was making matte paintings for films like Escape from New York and said, I should be doing what George and Steven are doing, so he became production designer for Battle Beyond the Stars (one of my favorite Star Wars ripoffs), and then wrote and directed The Terminator.
The whole industry started cranking out sci-fi films which started looking better and better each year (regardless of whether or not the stories were any good). Even James Bond went to outer space in Moonraker! Now its hard to find "art" films at the multiplex because the studios think its a waste of time unless you're making BLOCKBUSTER money, lol. But everyone HOPED Empire would be as good or better, at a time when sequels generally worked with the rule of "diminishing returns," meaning the budgets were cut, and less effort went into making them more often than not.
Lucas followed the 007 formula however, and poured every cent of his profits from Star Wars merchandizing into Empire, and the results speak for themselves. Audiences were blown away, lines formed around the block, our little theater stayed open long after midnight to have 2am screenings, and soon investors were building multiplexes across the country (and around the world) in anticipation of Return of the Jedi, where they could show it on multiple screens, along with all of the rising competition - Tron, Firefox, Conan the Barbarian, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, The Dark Crystal, The Thing, E.T., Poltergeist, and more.
The early 80's were a magical time for motion pictures, and I didn't think I'd ever experience that again, until... in 1993, Spielberg did it again with Jurassic Park. Computer-generated fx re-revolutionized the industry, and Lucas announced that the re-release of the Star Wars Trilogy Special Editions would raise the money for the long-awaited prequel films. James Cameron made 3-D worth seeing with Avatar, and after a decades-long legal battle, Marvel Comics got the film rights back to their most popular characters, and made overlapping franchises with Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers, which is still going and going and going!
Sadly, the most recent Star Wars trilogy - despite a great start - wasn't as good as the first two trilogies, but the Disney+ series have been very good overall, and even though I'm way too old to be so passionate about it, I still care about this childhood favorite, and carry high hopes that the Jedi will continue to entertain me (and the rest of the world) until I become one with the Force myself, lol. On a final note, thank you guy SO MUCH for sharing your reactions to these and so many other great films - you're hilarious and fun, and your time is much appreciated. All the best, and can't wait to see whatever's next! I hope I'm saying this right - dhanyavaad! (Thanks!)

Such a fun reaction, Kaursa and Parbrahm, You both were amazing . It's pretty rear to see someone who has no idea about the "No, I am your father" line uttered by Vader. Since its one of the most parodied scenes in modern media history. I was a kid when this came out and trust me it was shocking for all of us at the time. Plus the next movie was not to come out for 2 years. So the audience was left wondering, even debating if this new information could be true.

"The Empire Strikes Back" is the BEST "Star Wars" movie and one of the GREATEST films of all time. Easily my favorite John Williams film score.

@@UntrimmedSavage9858 Yes "Superman II" is my favorite Superman movie. Really loved Ken Thorne's score using themes by John Williams. And YES the scores to both "Conan the Barbarian" and "Conan the Destroyer" are AWESOME. Basil Poledouris was a genius. 'Barbarian" was his opus. I sometimes tend to lean more to "Destroyer", but "Barbarian" all the way. However, I do love both scores equally with "RoboCop" being my 2nd favorite by him.

27:00 Star wars is inspired by many sources including 7 Samurai and Western Movies, and the books, Lord of the Rings, but also philosophically has many inspirations from Eastern traditions such as Tao, Buddhism and also Hinduism, I think George Lucas was also inspired partly by the Veda's, many Indian ideas in there.
The Jedi philosophy is very much a blend of Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoist ideas and points of view.........in Space with "pew pew pew" laser guns and Laser Swords

Hey Kaursa and Parbrahm, you all act the same as I did when the reveal of Darth Vader happened in theaters. I said, WHAT!!!! WHAT!!!! are you KIDDING me!!!!!! THe most Evil, diabolical, man in the galaxy, is LUKE'S FATHERI!!!!! Ohhhhhhhh!!! HELL NO. THey need to change that pronto, that had to be a misprint. They must have released the wrong movie. It's impossible that VAder is Luke's father. My young brain could not comprehend such a twist. I debated endlessly with many of my friends about this matter and had to wait 3 years to have the next movie explain more. PLus I would watch the movie 15 more times in the theater. Mind and soul was rocked to the core with that reveal make no mistake. Just like you guys were shocked.

Fun fact: Vader had discovered Luke Skywalker was his son long before the Emperor told him. In the time between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, Vader was punished and humiliated by the Emperor because he was the only one still alive for the Emperor to vent his wrath upon for the Death Star's destruction. He spent every waking moment vowing to make the pilot who caused him such pain and humiliation to suffer before killing him. So he hired Boba Fett (the bounty hunter who takes Solo in this movie) to go after him. Fett had fought Luke, but they were separated by a sandstorm. Unable to continue pursuing, Fett returned to Vader onboard the Executor with the information he had: the pilot's name.
Since you saw Revenge of the Sith, there's no spoilers here. When Vader heard the name Skywalker, he was an absolute mess. Fett left because Vader was just standing there silently and assumed their contract was done. But inside, Vader was in turmoil with emotion; any thoughts of torturing and killing Luke was gone. He remembered the joy he felt when Padme told him she was pregnant, and the sorrow he felt at losing her.
    "A son..."
If his tear ducts hadn't burned away, he would have wept. The child he thought had been dead for so long, that he believed he had murdered along with his beloved wife, was alive.
    "I have a son..."
He then remembered what the Emperor had told him all those years ago; "It seems, in your anger, you killed her." Vader's gloved hand slowly clenched into a fist. He had lied. His master had dared lie to him, to his face, after months of pure torturous agony enduring the operations that bound him to this suit. The survival of his son confirmed Padme had lived after Mustafar; long enough to deliver their child. The Emperor had taken advantage of his weakness to turn it into a collar and chain.
Just as it did before in the hospital room over twenty years ago, Vader's fury threatened to tear apart the very room he was in. The metal walls and beams groaned as they bent and twisted out of shape, and thousands of spider web like cracks appeared on the glass windows on the Executor's bridge. Having lost everything had only made it easier for Vader to lay claim to anything he wanted. And with this knowledge, he made a solemn vow.
    "He will be mine."
