As Brent would say, Elevate the house, OR go full tilt Thistle Hill competitor. (sorry Brent, that's the best paraphrase I have). If they do the column one, I think they would seriously have to elevate the inside to match.

You're knowledge and detail is second to none.
Ashton, will learn a tremendous amount working with you. I'm sure she has excellent ideas as well.
Anyone who is serious about true craftsmanship and human perfection would be honored to work for you.
If we lived in Texas I'd work as a laborer to gain your knowledge.
Ashton has outstanding ideas, she will be an asset.
Maybe she could be on one of your design videos ?
We thank you so much for sharing your excellent videos as well as your knowledge.
God bless you and your family 🙏❄️❄️

One thing I liked about the buildings at the college I went to (mostly Classical Revival, Federal, and Greek Revival buildings) is that the windows would be the same width but the height would change. It made the buildings look taller. The first floor might have 12/12, the second floor 8/12, and the third floor 8/8.
On the other hand, I'm sure it sucked to live at the top of one of those dorms, you had to climb a bunch of stairs and you got a tiny window.

I appreciate that you showcased Ashlen's sketches in this video. I prefer the simpler entrance from the 1st sketch. A paneled vestibule would be an improvement over the recessed front door. I hope we will see more of this house in future videos.

Wythe is my favorite home ■ Peyton, I love his wife's office, but the neice's bedroom between the two bedrooms of his and then his wife's is creepy. I do like how their nephews/boys would mat bed in the upstairs hallway/setting area; I fold my bedding in like manner. The dinning room is one of the best designs I know. M

@AF-O6 Near the college, yes!! Charles City is good too. Yorktown, you can do better!! I had (as a customer) a realtor that refused to go into Yorktown, she called it Billy'sburg, meaning the folk are stuck in middle school behavior and never grew up nor left. I personally think Jamestown is beautiful. There is property across the river that may be very private; good beach. Enjoy!! M

  • @timothybilsky3023

As an owner of an 1832 federal in southwestern PA (relatively small one but four rooms square on top of each other - 2 top, 2 bottom) what’s interesting to me is how on mine there are 3 large double hungs (3’w x 5’h) on both the front and back on the top level only but then only two on the front bottom as the front door (slightly recessed entry with a pedestal walk in) sits where a third window on the bottom level would go. Great job on the design ideas, I do think if it could get back to the odd number bays, that would be more visually appealing/focusing, but def getting the entry/vehicle approach out in front is key, if it’s in the budget. Ashlyn (sp?) has some good design thoughts on this one. Keep going!
I’m working on installing period color curtains/drapery and tiebacks, but boy, old wood/brick is unforgiving at times to drive into, even with the proper bits! Sadly, I violated Brent’s cardinal rule of not replacing some very old windows with new but we at least went with SDL (simulated divided lites, with grids on both sides of the window and a thick sashed window to give it that original feel. We had lead paint and several very rotted sashes. That was before I found this channel and I am happy to report at almost 10 years, these particular vinyl windows have definitely stood up and along with a 96.5% AFUE furnace, does quite well keeping up in sometimes near zero temps.

I know you’ve thought of this, but just reminding everyone six bays over 5 bays never happens because the upper bays are centered over lower bays to take significant masonry weight off the lintels of the lower bays. Good work here, Brent.

Two Story Porch ■ I believe this new exterior will pay for itself and the millwork inside of home, whereas, the one story stoop will be a deficient to the entire face of home and causing the interior millwork be underestimated. Q. What is the resale for the [e]ntire package of the two story porch vs. the appeal and the cost of the one story stoop? Hundreds of thousands; when design is more than function!! M

    • @BrentHull

My friend has a similarly proportioned house, except the front side has the front door and only 2 windows, one in the kitchen above the sink and one in the living room. Both are wide, not very tall and set so that they are at a perfect hight to look out when you're standing. The layout is symetrical. She's thinking of doing some renovations, mostly to the interior. I feel the house needs more windows on the front, upstairs.
The house was built in the 1970s and has a sunken living room. Right now it really lacks character, but could get a mid-century modern vibe going with the sunken living room, at least the interior. The kitchen was redone just before she bought it; white shaker cabinets and grey granite counters.
I should take pictures and do some sketches like you do.

The young lady from ND should look at Gloucester mansion in Natchez (1812). She’d see that an entablature without a frieze is never satisfying.

2nd house looks better and is way lower cost to effectuate. Once you start moving windows around, it gets way more expensive not to mention it might not correspond to what is going on in the interior and how the house is divided though I assume this is taken into consideration.

I dont like the double height portico option, is that kind of Greek?, but I really like the pediment over the front door version and the elimination of the two top windows

What I think? ■ The second story porch roofing is a must; with the new exterior work, putting a one story porch is cheap looking. For some reason I would really enjoy some second story iron work on atleast the two large windows under the porch roof; like a patio rail for open window/plants. The Porch lighting fixture and indoor stair area must have magnificent statement to be suit with porch. The front sidewalk is excellent and perhaps a road natural fencing like boxwoods with a beautiful gate would be a perfect framing. As for the front door casing, it needs some like of window above for light, caring the glass panes around the door. The door will have to be in suit with porch, does a double door work here? M

I would leave it as it is...
    1. It's more a Shaker-style house.. "no frills at my house".
    2. You don't know what's behind those two windows... maybe they needed the space for some rooms.
    3. It's still symmetrical.

@@BrentHull Fair enough, but then you should have called this video "Changing a ... house" instead of "Fixing a ... house".
The Shaker style is a style on it's own... and I think a previous owner changed the original front door, so fixing this house would mean to restore the front door back to a Shaker style entrance.
