At the time, this car's 240hp was actually quite a lot. To compare it to 60's muscle cars, that's over 300hp gross. Yeah, it doesn't put out 1000+ hp like the new ZR1, but who can use all that power on the street?! Contemporaries included the Ferrari 328 (270hp), Porsche 944 Turbo (247hp), Lotus Esprit Turbo (215hp), Mustang GT (225hp), Grand National (245hp) so the Vette was right in the mix. And, don't forget the B2K option came out in 1987 that gave the Corvette 345hp from twin turbos. Search for a Road & Track article: "Corvette Comparison: 1986 Z51 vs 1968 L88" (Feb 86) and you'll find out how awesome 80's Corvettes are. :)
345 ft/lb of torque is the answer. Torquey L98 Corvettes are fun to drive on the daily. I prefer it over the more powerful LT1 engines in the later C4's.
You can still have a great experience driving these cars. good to see that people garaged some of them and were gentle with the interior. Every one of these all original in good condition is a survivor to say the least. Good video Zach. ✌️
Yeah you can as long as you know the sill is really wide and you need gymnastics to get inside, it creaks and rattles a lot, and you better be ready to do some wrenching.
This would be a fine daily driver even today. A bit of style but it's not highly-strung. This design has aged very well. GM has had one rule since the 1950s: the Corvette must survive and remain king of the Chevy lineup.
The Wagon's a GM B-Body I can guarantee you, probably a Pontiac or Custom Cruiser. Would be cool today (especially the Custom Cruiser with skylights), if it hadn't been left effectively abandoned
Still working on getting mine back up to par, mechanically its sound, and the interior is finally shaping up, its awesome to see that interior actuallly in relitivly good shape.
I have an 84, and it's my favorite vehicle to drive ever. They are just so quirky and fun, while also handling very predictably at the limit and being genuinely quick up curvy roads.
Base? There was only one model with several different option packages. The car you are reviewing is far from "Base". It has some nice options on it. Is it a Z-51 or Z-52?
89 corvette with the 6 speed is peak C4 corvette IMO. Reliable torquey L98 paired with bulletproof ZF-6 speed while also having the 80s looks still in contrast to the 1990 interior refresh. Later C4's are cool too but the early 80s ones are where its at for me.
You're grasping at straws! 😄😆But seriously, were the 80's Caprice wagons available in woody?? I think so. I think All the GM full-size wagons were. Even some of the compacts like the Pontiac Sunbird Safari.😎
@landonbenford8369 I googled it and that’s the closest match I could find based on the taillight lenses. 98.92573% of all wagons in the 80’s had the faux wood panel. Give or take a 100th of a percentage. 😉
Awesome video man. Something I hear often from RUclipsrs is how weak and low-power cars of the 80s and 90s were. But understand that if you were a child of this period, these cars were state of the art and amazing. We could not predict that in the future vettes would be producing 1k hp. As a matter of fact, the popular trends would have said otherwise. It's all a matter of perspective. As a child of this era, the cars of this period were fast and exciting. Never once did someone utter "oh it's only 245hp" to us we would say wow 245 hp! That's 100 more than dads sports sedan!
I always remember how unusual white rear reversing cornering lamps on the side were! Not many cars had them...they were more common on the front on larger American luxury cars, but not rear ones. They were never a thing on European cars, however in the past decade or so,when you turn corners with your turn signals on,many European cars now have the feature that turns on the corresponding front fog light to help illuminate the road to the side,as you turn.
@@landonbenford8369 My brother had a '95 Grand Am. I remember it had large, round reversing lights alone in the bumper,in the back, but not on the side...so they were just regular back up lights, they may have lit up the rear more than an average car,as they were quite large, but they didn't specifically light up the side,as you reversed around a corner, like the Camero's side reversing lights.
@@markhealey9409 I shoulda made it clear I was referring to straight up reverse lights as a coworker had one. But Thanks for reassuring me that I'm not going crazy... yet!!
Ford actually did try to phase out the V8 in the Mustang completely for a short period. The Mustang II was initially only available with either a 4 or 6cyl. But eventually they felt the pressure the public and dealers and released a V8 again
The reason we have the power we have now is more to do with engine management. Older engines gain power with modern programmable ECUs while staying emissions legal.
Corvettes went undefeated (as in the won every race) for three years straight from '85-'87 in SCCA Showroom Stock. Porsche and Lotus got so butthurt they got together and had the Vettes banned from the series and they were forced to race against themselves in Corvette Challenge.
The digital cluster has aged the same way all these EVs and Hybrid vehicles will age 5 years from now 😂 EVs and Hybrids are money grab…long live gas engines and diesels.
I think the most concerning era for Vette to be or not to be was after big recession time and the C6 and whether it should exist or not. Remember that was the time of GM bankruptcy 😳
I think people hate on the 1986-87 Corvettes, just because of the over- repeated fact that the Buick Grand National of the same years was supposedly faster the Corvette.
Surprisingly a C4 in very Good Condition, Front Bumper is the only thing needing attention. Most C4's are in such a neglected condition that they are painful to look at.
I have a 91 a 2010 and a 23 vette love em all but I drive my c4 more it feels like a go cart n I always take it too 120mph n it feels like I'm going soo fast 😂
@@trentryan27they did it from the factory that to bring in air for brake cooling, the inside of the rims themselves actually have writing for what direction they are supposed to be. (This is my car)
My favorite generation of Corvette. All hates can eat it.
I second that emotion

It wasn’t just power but weight ratio, low ride and good handling. Still drive my 1985 to this day and it’s a blast!

And considering the C4 Corvette weighs next to nothing, 240 is more than enough to be exhilarating. 😎

You can't daily drive This! This thing belongs under Glass!!!❤
Love those C4 stock wheels.
My dad had a 1988. Got to drive it a lot when I got my license. Its fiberglass body made it really light so it moved pretty well.
Surprised I didn't hear Prince's Little Red Corvette playing at some point.
You got licensing money? Lol
@@KidNato especially prince was a hard ass when it came to people even sampling his music, but Id say thats a moot point considering hes gone.
Great vid... love 85-89 C4s (84 engine was meh). But the salad shooter wheels the ones from 88 and 89. 84-87 are just called turbine wheels.
I’d be more than happy to own that Corvette, any Vette with the salad spinners is a yay from me!

That front plate is a crime on such a beauty.
Illinois requires front plates for "law enforcement reasons". Yeah, ok. But Indiana next door does not.😮
The wheels are called sawblades.
Yeah, my 88' Supra came with them. Honestly nicest stock wheels I've had, but insane to clean so I went with Enkeis.
i have a dark red 1987 corvette base with an auto, i love that you made this video

I have a mint condition 1984 C4. Your review passed right over one of the best parts of the Corvette, the flip around headlights.
these are one of my favorite corvette body styles. the only ones that beat it for me are the 63 split window and the 82 collectors edition
This gen looks absolutely smooth. I like the C3, but this one is on another level for me
5:08 That looks like some sort of GM product from the 1980s, probably a Chevy Caprice or an Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser. :)
This model of any Corvettes is my favourite, I even prefer the looks of this over the Z1.
Thanks for coming out to check both my merkur and C4 out. :)
One of my favorite gen Corvettes ahh those 80s GOD DAMN ITS BEAUTIFUL
The A Team car really boosted sales for this model...
That's a really good looking car!

That graffitied wagon 5:03 is Definitely Not a Mercury. Or Any Ford product. It Is DEFINITELY a GM!! Looks like a Buick Estate Wagon.😊
Looks like a Caprice actually, has the Chevy tail lights and the little Caprice badge on the C-pillar. Gotta love them old wagons!
1:33 Be lucky it's not a Crossfire~~!! 😭
My dream car the 84 to 89 corvette
skip the 84, too many problems and slow as balls crossfire engine.
