I think remarks like "everyone has anxiety" actually perpetuate the stigma because that doesn't allow for any distinction between everyday stress and actual anxiety disorders. She used "stress" and "anxiety" interchangeably and they are simply not the same thing. Insinuating that /everybody/ suffers from anxiety takes away from those who actually have a disorder and need help... Equating stress and anxiety implies that mentally ill folks are "weaker" because they cannot function in the same way mentally well people can. Stress and anxiety are very different things. That's just the truth.

Brooke Dobossy Your comment reflects many of my exact thoughts while watching/listening to this. I almost immediately found her remarks disjointed from the clinical side of anxiety and associated disorders, and packaged them with typical or routine stress. It came off as a great disservice to those of us who suffer with chronic anxiety and panic disorders, the variety of which cannot be cured with a glass of wine.

      Yes, very true.
As someone who has suffered from severe anxiety at times, meaning I am in a total panic 24/7 and can only stay in a darkened room with no contact with anyone when I am feeling like this, her idea of anxiety would be my idea of a really good day!

“Everyone has anxiety” no No NO us with anxiety disorders and disabilitys will all tel you that anxiety and stress is not the same thing! You are the reason that so many people think they have anxiety when they don’t! It is NOT the same! For an example: I scratch myself until I bleed when I am having anxiety attacks and those happen multiple times a day, this is not caused because of stress but instead because my brain is sick or in other ways wired to think that I’m constantly in danger and I many times can’t calm myself down because I’m in a complete loss of control. Stress, you can cure that with Maybe a spa trip, or hanging out with family. Anxiety, you have to go through years of therapy and trying out different meds and sometimes not even that works.

Ummmmm...... I'm sorry but anyone who has ever had a panic attack will tell you that the physical and psychological affects from them are SO much worse than the stigma about anxiety. You can teach yourself to ignore other people's opinions, you can't just magically pretend that you aren't having random moments in which you feel like your having a heart attack and might die.

    • @enclave2k1

YES! I have multiple anxiety attacks a day on an average day, in which I scratch myself until I bleed, feel like I’m dying, and am at a complete loss of control, I don’t see that in the media anywhere. Anxiety is so over glorified 😑

It starts with something like this... I would feel a bit stressed out and the I start to worry that I'll have stroke. I then check my blood pressure to reassure myself. Blood pressure raises and I become more worried. This spiral continues until I'm almost incapacitated by fear, convinced that I'm about to die, and end up driving myself to the emergency room at 2AM to have my blood pressure checked.

I don't know why people casually say that they have anxiety whereas in real they don't even know what anxiety actually is. Anxiety is very much misguided by worrying ,fear of the future outcomes etc but no that's not anxiety. The strong feeling of worry, nervous, negative mind, fear etc is called anxiety. I don't even want to start with the physical symptoms of anxiety like heart palpitations, dizziness, nausea, numbness in which you can feel your own body, tingling sensation etc as there are many. For those who still didn't get what anxiety is do me a favour and say this to someone who really have anxiety disorder and i promise you they will explain it to you ;)

I'm actually crying because I had no idea that something like this could relate to my life so much. I've had anxiety my whole life and nothing bothers me more that people telling me to get my mind off it, anxiety doesn't leave. It's not an emotion, it's a piece of your brain that didn't leave, it can be better at times but it's always there!! This made me so happy but so sad, I'm happy because I'm glad that other people know what I'm going through but sad also because I relate.
Sorry for this little rant!! I just loved this video.

  • @davidrobins1021

As someone who suffers from anxiety, what really winds me up beyond belief is people who dismiss or minimise it by thinking it's just "worrying", and dealing with it is just a matter of "not worrying". This despite the seriousness of anxiety being explained multiple times. It seemingly just goes in one ear and out the other.
I don't expect non-sufferers to truly understand, but it would be nice to be listened to. Some people are totally clueless about mental health, but if it was a physical condition, it would all be "are you ok?" , and so on, with real concern shown.
They just don't get it. It's infuriating.

I find that for me, my anxiety a lot of times seems to be nutritionally based. If I don't eat correctly or have too much sugar or caffeine or even when I'm coming down with a cold. A quick fix for me, is a good meal. a good multivitamin, some exercise, sunshine and taking the supplements Gaba, 5HTTP, and Choline as needed. This seems to stabilize my thinking, also the Indian herb, Ashwagandha is very helpful.

Obviously, this does not prevent being followed by a health professional. However, I believe it's a good way to take care of yourself and make you feel better. I sincerely hope that you will find your means to fight your anxiety.

The instant cure for anxiety is to understand the fact that there are infinite amount of possible outcomes in this universe and our brain only thinks of a handful . A bad outcome can become the means of a good outcome in the future. Just like that a good outcome can become the means of a bad outcome. For example, you lost your job (bad thing). But then you got a new job which is better ( bad thing led to a good outcome.) It's an endless cycle. So just go with the flow and don't think about it . 😄 Goodluck.

    turn ANXIETY into LOVE.
anxiety is making you close up and love makes you open up.
if you're constantly anxious you need to GIVE love and thus receive love.
meditate, eat healthy, exercise. do everything focusing on love and on loving the entire world, even love those things you hate because if there weren't things you hated there wouldn't be things you loved. love yourself, parent your feelings, you didn't choose to be born but you wouldn't exist without chemical love, and some people's love for themselves. this world is all about that two side yin yang love relationship. good habits are almost everything, I'm a useless piece of meat but at least I do that & that..

I hope she is successful at convincing the medical community of this device's merits. The whole diagnosis thing is excruciating. Usually you present first to a GP who is not really an expert. For myself, I don't have trouble sleeping, and I'm not conscious of worrying (overthinking, yes, but not worrying exactly), yet there are times I am completely debilitated at work to the point of cognitive impairment. The computer screen becomes a jumble of too high contrast meaningless squiggles while I'm sweating like mad, hyperventilating and feel frozen to the spot. Yet without the more major symptoms it's hard to say I have anything worse than mild GAD. That's a darned frustrating spot to be in when you feel job scared because you can't answer the phone! I hope her device helps people better identify where they really stand on the spectrum of mental illnesses.

    I also have anxiety..
but I don’t think it is social anxiety
I am not even sure whether it is anxiety or not
But I am so tired of this
I am just always anxious about being anxious
Especially when I go to sleep I start thinking about things that scare me, and I remember that I can be anxious and I immediately get anxious!
And even when I calm down I just realise that I calmed down and I get anxious again...
And when in comes to food even if I am hungry I can’t eat when I am anxious
Because when I am anxious I am also nauseous!
Even if I am eating normally without anxiety, the fact that I am not anxious comes to my mind and I start feeling anxious again...
And the weirdest part is that when I am outside or with my friends I can forget about it, and I feel less anxious then when I am alone.
It is so awful I think that I am going crazy 😭
Similar thing used to happen with when I was a child, but it happened just at night
    And then it gradually disappeared
And now this happened to me again, but in a worse way...
I really hope that I am not the only one who has this kind of “anxiety”...

I have two anxiety disorders and for some reason the "raining with the window open" example didn't feel right to me. She did get the catastrophizing stuff right but I feel like non-anxious people watching would be like "big deal. why can't they just close the window and pick up the mess?" How about getting a test back with a bad grade and worrying about failing the whole class? Or getting an email from your boss that there's something important they wanna talk about with you and worrying about getting fired? They're more general examples, but I feel like more people can relate to it.

There is a difference between stress and anxiety, there is a difference between anxiety and panic disorder. Anxiety is not just about overthinking or worrying. Panic attacks are not just about crying and breaking down and having a fast heart beat. Anxiety and panic disorder are mental illnesses that can almost never be cured by oneself but only through therapy. Stress can be relieved through yoga, the spa, working out or whatever. Anxiety can not.

gratefulandamazed just because they may have these effects, does not guarantee that they will considering how unique biochemistry is to the individual.... this is exactly why we need more diagnostic tests and tools that provide conclusive feedback are much needed. Given the nature of the long term pharmaceutical treatment and the effects on the body when any particular treatment may have not even been the best choice for the patient has been long ignored, many patients needlessly suffer from the side effects of medications they may never have needed in the first place. Sometimes patients need no more than therapy to manage symptoms, but are thrown onto SSRI's or heavier antianxiety meds like benzodiazepines since there's really no qualitative diagnostic tests. There are countless, more acessable organic substance that far out number what's behind the pharmacy counter that can cause severe sometimes irreversible anxiety among other things. However, the take home message is that awareness of this much underserved population of those struggling with MI are not being treated any better than some throwing darts in the dark hoping for the best. She's providing evidence that anxiety is measurable and the ability to have very individualized treatment has been long available yet completely ignored. She's trying to educate the public and academic community to this fact as a catalyst for change.... She's not advocating chemical use, quite opposite, she's trying to eliminate unnecessary use of pharmaceuticals

Obviously, this does not prevent being followed by a health professional. However, I believe it's a good way to take care of yourself and make you feel better.
