  • In this video I talk about the new CBCS COMIC BOOK graded label! This has been a big discussion amongst comic book collectors for quite some time. Requesting to see a new label from that company and it seems like at NYCC they have started to really begin to promote them. Do you guys like it? Do you think this will be enough to close the gab between CGC and CBCS? Let me know in the comments.
    Hope you guys enjoy the video!

    I honestly have always appreciated the uniform blue bar on the CBCS. But! You cannot deny that the grade on a white box makes the grade stand out as what you are paying for. I can imagine Instagram, convention, and even LCS sellers love how obvious this makes the grade. I do think the new CBCS label avoids the big white sticker look that CGC has. I'm on board!

Marvel Comics #1 (and an OCTOBER copy at that!!!) in the new CBCS holder. Will be one to analyze from many different angles (rare edition in #2 slab company's new label). Will it buck the trend (is MC#1 Oct copy label proof, and can the new label 'help' bring in CGC numbers? One for the books!

  • @adamspencer5142
    @adamspencer5142 10 месяцев назад +1

    Its better than nothing; as a company its probably time to do something as long as they didn't invest too much in this. Many companies spend allot of money going through intensive design phases, since they just appeared to mostly copy the CGC I hope this was done on the cheap. I think it can't hurt / might help.
    CBCS does have a quality that CGC doesn't, they actually make an effort to properly note most first appearances which I think helps on resale a bit, especially for lesser-known keys (and, its just nice to have this noted for the personal collection.)

  • @Drayco91
    @Drayco91 10 месяцев назад

    I've only bought CGC second hand, and my first submission was a couple weeks ago - also to CGC. I'm only interested in having books I personally like slabbed and the resale is meaningless to me. If I decide to send anything else for grading, these really nice looking new labels are going to push me over to that way instead, most likely.
    That said, I like the larger lip on the case of the CGC books - makes them easier to stand up, hang up or store safely

  • @kyleroussel

    The new CBCS labels are pretty good from a graphic design perspective. The arrow pointing to the grade, which is now presented in a taller, thinner font, does a good job of calling out the grade in an understated way. The nicest label of them all is the perfect 10....which is a bit of a shame because it will clearly be the least seen. The two "downsides" I see with these new labels is that the text on the left & right of the label is poorly laid out. It looks like it's floating in nothingness. The other thing I believe they could have, and should have fixed is out of the EGS playbook. If CBCS truly thinks that the comic art should be the first thing people see, then they should have their "universal grade" labels available in multiple colors. Let's take a example like X-Men 50, the Steranko classic. Mostly green and yellow art. A blue label on top would call itself out, which apparently CBCS doesn't want. So do what EGS does, and let people choose a custom background color. It's a great feature. Then you can find some other way to distinguish it as "universal", "signature", "qualified", etc.
    I've never submitted to CBCS, and the presser I work with won't ever work with them again. So while I would certainly give them a shot, I don't submit on my own (yet) and so it's unlikely CBCS will ever get my business.

  • @300baud
    @300baud 10 месяцев назад +1

    I like the new label, but one problem I always felt they had with the old label was that the font is too narrow; this new label does not fix that. Hopefully these are just prototypes that will get tweaked before they unleash the final version to the public. Otherwise, I think they look fine.

  • @kinneywhat7019

    I think these look great. I prefer CBCS slabs, but I typically only use them for signature verification. I just got a batch of 8 books back yesterday. Had I watched this video first, I might have waited a few months to see if they new labels were going into affect. I especially like the yellow signature labels with the different shades of yellow.

  • @leeniren3706

    It will make a difference for CBCS as many people will want the new label and will send lots of money their way to get their books flagged with the new info. Thus it’s a moneymaker for CBCS.

  • @Matches-Malone
    @Matches-Malone 10 месяцев назад +4

    Can’t please everyone. I’m a graphic designer. I always liked CBCS labels. To me it was already the better design when compared to CGC. CBCS font design and layout is well designed, simple and clean. The only reason why I gravitate to CGC is because they started grading comics first and people are willing to spend more on CGC. CGC labels is definitely not attractive and never was. So with redesigning CBCS labels, was a waste of time and money, even though I do like the new elements added to the label. Sadly, CGC has already established a brand recognition and that will never have CBCS gain any traction over them, unless CGC continues to make mistakes which would cause their reputation to tank. CBCS has to find a way to authenticate signatures better, their has been test submissions of false signature on comics sent to CBCS and came back as verified and that hurts their one program that CGC does not have. And that will cause a loss to CBCS business.

    I sent them some label ideas a couple years ago and posted them on their forums. Seems like they used a few of my ideas, specifically the black and gold for the highest graded books. People will complain if they look too much like CGC but the reality is, they need to if they ever want to be on par with CGC. You should be able to look at a wall of slabs and neither company should stand out.
    I’m unsure what really goes on in the CBCS offices. It seems to take them years to make any kind of changes. My only hope is that their marketing department told them it would be 3 months for a concept, then a year later with no communication they rolled this out. At least then they can know what it’s like to be one of their customers.

    the two things that are better are the white backing for the grade, and also the size and shape of the CBCS logo. THe number font is thin, but i am thinking i might get used to it. I am still undecided on the arrow pointing to the grade, but i accept it because the white backing is so much better and it might grow on me as well. Overall i think it's better and I do give them props for actually doing something, but they always seem to fall a little short and "pale" in comparison. I think they enjoy being number 2 in the industry. I think they're are overdoing it with the 9.9 and 10.

    The horizontal scale () is too narrow on all of the label fonts.
    The title of the comic book will almost always be drawn with a font that has a normal/typical font width, even when it's heavily stylized. And thus, the label should try to use a standard font width as well (horizontal scale) so the mismatch isn't as noticeable.

    I never understood the knit-picking over the label. I didn't hear much of that complaint until CBCS had improved their slab which is undoubtedly superior to CGC. CBCS grading was always more consistent than CGC, and I think it was just "copium" from OCD CGC fan boys, that were desperately looking for something to complain about. I would ask people what they meant by it, and the best response I could get was there wasn't a white background on the grade.......Really?
    But I get why CBCS updated it. If the market speaks, and people can't handle it not looking more like their CGC books, they had to respond.

    I’m am so excited to buy underpriced old label CBCS the next 24 month! Possibly wait for the value perception to level out… or if it doesn’t, will consider re-grading if it works out with risk management.
    Don’t be fooled, we will see many books undervalued soon and many buyers will be too confused to confidently pull the trigger.
    My opinion, not financial advice nor facts. I’m buying the comic book at a relatively certain quality grade. As a comic collector/seller, why buy because cgc or cbcs (unless signed) if grading results are correlated? CBCS alone has created larger price ranges for same/similar condition due to lower perceived value of cgc. This new label in the short term will likely have the same value impact due to perception in the initial months.
    Heck we might even get the new labels for cheaper at first because the market is less aware. Overall look at the comic condition itself not the market disparity over new/old label or cgc/cbcs. It’s all perceptible value until the demand for the book is all that matters. Both companies and both labels accomplish the same goal for truly good books.

      I would only use cbcs for some of my comics i got signed at cons before i started grading.

    Not a fan of this new label design. Almost looks like they are sarcastically pointing out the grade.

    Much ado about nothing. As long as CGC slabs are more valuable than CBCS in the marketplace, the label change is meaningless to me. CBCS is second tier. I don’t see this changing anytime soon (or ever) regardless of the label changes.
