Remember when “In The Nightside Eclipse” first came out. I listened to that album to death. Such an awesome release - and the anticipation after that mini album/split album with Enslaved (which was also awesome, but a bit more primitive). Good times! Or should I say Evil times...

I was named after the vocalist of this band! My dad is a huge Emperor/Ihsahn fan so much so that I am legally named Ihsahn, I honestly feel extremely honored. With that being said you should listen to Ihsahn’s solo albums too, his solo career in my opinion is fantastic, a bit different than Emperor but damn good regardless!

One important thing to consider is that this song was written by a bunch of 16/17 years old teenagers who read a lot of Tolkien, it's understandale that the song doesen't have modern Behemoth depth when it comes to the lyrics.
Vin seems bummed out that his Bible knowledge was not used much here. But Sori instantly get it, this song is pure black metal atmosphere.

This is not just Black Metal, it is, in not just my not so humble opinion, THE quintessential black metal track. Imagine writing this epic, symphonic score when you’re at the tender age of just 17. Ihsahn is a genius of the magnitude of guys like Mozart or Beethoven, but with a darkness to his soul that he unleashes and shares with us through his music. This particular track is the only song which lyrics were written by once member Mortiis, who later went on to form his own theatrical eponymous band. To me the lyrics and the title, with the seemingly apparent misspelling, speak of obscurity, mysticism and the occult, all central themes to the genre.

This song litterally changed my life the first time I heard it. You cannot find a bigger fan of this band than myself in the world (you can see all my Emperors/Ihsahn covers on my channel).
The music these guys released is just a gift to this world and will never be surpassed.
Ihsahn is just a genius, he already was at 16-17 when he wrote this song, which is now one of (if not THE) the anthems of Black Metal, and he invented a whole new style with the introduction of keyboards into black metal.....
In The Nightside Eclipse is pure gold, but for me Anthems tot he Welkin at Dusk (the next album) is just the best album in music history.

I had a chance to see Ihsahn (front man of Emperor) in Sydney a couple months ago. He was phenomenal. He’s matured a lot (musically wise) since the last Emperor album “Prometheus” in 2001ish. His solo stuff is amazing. Progressive and atmospheric. He did a couple Emperor songs to keep the originals happy 😉. Emperor is pure Norwegian black metal.
Another thing to note is that Ihsahn was only about 16 when he wrote this album. Mind blowing for someone so young.

    Mightiest am I
But I am not alone in this cosmos of mine
For the black hills consist of black souls
Souls that are already died one thousand deaths
Behind the stone walls of centuries they breed their black art
Boiling their spells in cauldrons of black gold
    Far up in the mountains
Where the rain fall not far
    Yet the sun cannot reach
    The wizards, my servants
    Summon the souls of macrocosm
No age will escape my wrath
I travel through time and I return to the future
    I gather wisdom now lost
I visit again the eternally ancient caves
Before a mighty emperor thereupon came
Watching the mortals "discovering" my chronicles, guarded
By the old demons, even unknown to me
Once destroyed their souls are being summoned
To my timeless prison of hate
It is delightful to feast upon the screaming souls
That were destroyed in my future
How many wizards that serve with me with evil, I know not
    My empire has no limits
From the never ending mountains black
    To the bottomless lakes
I am the ruler and has been for eternities long
    I am them
From the never ending mountains black
    To the bottomless lakes
I am the ruler and has been for eternities long
My wizards are many, but their essence is mine
Forever they are in the hills in their stone homes of grief
Because I am the spirit of their existence
    I am them
    I am them
    I am them.

Well that was even more unexpected than Dissection yesterday.... what's next, some "recent" Black Metal like Mgla? More 90's Black metal? As for Emperor, I'm actually not the biggest fan, but I appreciate the music. Kinda like Sori I guess.
Hearing Sori talk about the music "in the back" reminding her of Mountains and precipices and cool things, really just makes me want to see her react to Agalloch even more... that's what I love about that band, I feel like i'm in the middle of a forest with snow and shit, every time. So yeah, requesting that again.
For a totally random band mention, I got reminded of Saor, a one man atmospheric folk\black metal from the UK, using lots of Bagpipes and also Fiddles or tin whistles to give a Scottish theme to the music. If you want some music to you about "mountains and other cool shit", check out something like "Saor - The Declaration", off-video. I'm not gonna bother requesting that, it's a small band, i'll stick to Agalloch until it happens, haha.

The thing with a lot of Black Metal bands, especially older stuff and bands from the Norwegian Black Metal scene, is the atmosphere portrayed in the music. Sori was right on target with how she described where the music took her. It's meant to be dark, cold, hypnotic and like a roller coaster. It can be very repetitive, but you never really notice it because the vocals add that element of unease to the experience. Some bands use the cheapest equipment they can on purpose to get the right atmosphere. Varg, from Burzum and MAYHEM, specifically asked for a cheap headset mic (in the 90's, so you can imagine how that sounded) to record his albums while in prison. I'm really glad you checked this band out because if someone had said "Well, ACTUALLY, this isn't trve Black Metal" then you would know they don't know shit about the genre, or Black Metal in general. \m/

Emperor is considered the creators of Symphonic/Melodic Black Metal, Burzum added keyboards to Black Metal before Emperor but it was Emperor that took it to another level, and can really be considered ahead of its time, specially inside the Black Metal scene of that time (Burzum, Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir on their first two albuns and many other bands).

Emperor is a Norwegian Black Metal band, a kind of sub-genre of the Black Metal subgenre; Emperor always borrowed a bit more of Celtic Frost's avant-garde influence in their sound and songwriting than many of their Norwegian contemporaries. The music behind the distortion really is some beautiful stuff, the band has recorded "neo-classical" versions of some of the songs where the music is much easier to hear. "I Am the Black Wizards" is the right title, and though the Norwegian author Mortiis' grammar can be a bit rough sometimes (I'll bet his English is almost certainly better than your Norwegian), the title in this case is deliberate: the narrator speaks from the perspective of the animating spirit and inspiration behind the night landscape and the magicians and other creatures that haunt it. Mortiis' song lyrics in this era were fantasy stories about haunted dreamscapes imagined by troubled, artistic creator escaping from the unimaginative confinement of the modern, industrialized world and the confinement of its bland, tightly-regimented society and government: the entire output of Mortiis' art is a rejection of the world that modern man has created for himself.

Not sure if this was mentioned before by anyone, but there are actually two recordings of "I am the black wizards", the first one was off their self-titled split ep with Entombed and it was very raw and unpolished. The second recording was from their first LP "In the nightside eclipse" and it's much more polished and has higher production quality with more emphasis on the keyboards.

Ok. Now that you've tackled Emperor, you absolutely HAVE to listen to BERGTATT (the whole album is a mere half hour long) by ULVER. It's black metal with a decidedly folk touch. And it's a concept album about a norwegian fairytale: a little girl gets lost in the woods and gets enticed by the fairies and trolls that haunt the forest. Bergtatt means "taken by the mountain".
The music on the album is very, very melodic, the singing is almost priestly (no kidding!) at times, and it has flutes, and piano, and classical guitar. I can guarantee you WILL like it. Seriously.
Oh, and they're decidedly not satanic.

Forgot to mention last night due to severe tiredness, but you are absolutely right about other bands being inspired by Emperor (and Satyricon, Mayhem, Immortal, Darkthrone ++) from the Norwegian Black Metal wave.. many of them, like Cradle and Behemoth (Nergal have stated it several times) were hugely inspired and influenced by it. Also in other generes.. Nightwish? 100% formed by Toumas because of the 3rd and the Mortal (with the amazing Kari Rueslåtten).

VinAnd Sori Yeah, it had (and still do!) a HUGE impact on the metal scene all over the world. Really funny considering it's us.. tiny little Norway! But as I mentioned, the metal were/are heavily influenced and inspired by our nature landscape, our cold and harsh fall/winter.. which is very present in the sound. (reason why "Norwegian Black Metal" is kind of it's own genre)

Darkthrone were not inspired by Emperor. Darkthrone started before{pr at least around the same time as} Emperor. They were one of the first black metal bands to emerge in fact{if anything emperor were influenced by them- as were pretty much ALL black metal bands of the 2nd wave}; the first wave were bands like Bathory{the first}, Mayhem, and Darkthrone -in the first wave or early 2nd.

Will Baker I think you just read it wrong. I listed the bands that were part of the "Norwegian Black Metal wave" (or the 2nd black metal wave).. didn't say Darkthrone was inspired by Emperor, but that they are among the bands who inspired others. I may have worded myself badly, sorry if that's the case. But I grew up during those years and got into the extreme metal scene at the time. So know all the history around it :) but again.. might just be my wording! Norwegian after all so 2nd language isn't always spot on, hehe
