That’s what he thinks, and the only one that can beat him is himself. And I have faith in him that he will become the best racer in motocross history. And I’ve seen and raced against some of the best this country is ever produced. Glory to GOD!
Others have mentioned the extra pressure he invites by talking this way on the podium (JS and AC during Southwick broadcast) but nobody has hypothesized that the extra pressure is what he is seeking when he trash talks like this. I think you are spot on here, the only caveat being that the other riders, in addition to not wanting to invite extra pressure are also motivated to keep quiet simply because they don't want to rock the boat and raise the ire of Feld, MX Sports, Sponsors, etc... But yeah, you crystallized this perfectly and that definitely earns you a new subscription from me.
He doesn’t really talk trash compared to trash talkers in other sports I just think the media likes to make a bigger deal out of what he says ! He is exactly what the sport needs !!
There’s been tons of trash talk by tons of different riders. Shoot even Dungy said some good stuff like calling Chad reed a lapper when Chad got in the way. And he got absolutely punked by JLaw with straight jabs. To say Deegs is the only one is wild.
I think the sport itself wants the clean-cut image for their riders . I believe the team owners take instruction from their sponsors. The sponsors want the clean, respectful image for their products. So they limit what the rider can say on the podium. It becomes very obvious because, just like mainstream news fake news casters, read a script they have been handed all sound the same no matter what channel you watch. So does every rider in this sport . Cookie cutter podium speech. It's boring and fake . That's why people get up and go get refreshments during the podium speech because they already have heard it a million times before . But not with Haiden Deegan. They want to stay and listen because it's never the same . Real raw emotions. In the greatest sport on earth. I'm 67 years old and have followed Haiden for 12 years because I loved watching how hard he worked . He deserves all the respect and rewards that he is getting. The hate that haters spew just fans the flames 🔥 and makes him burn brighter . Keep it up, fools, lol 😆

So it is interesting. The first person to talk about this is Jason weigant. he was mentioning that in the 2000s era everybody wanted Stewart, Ricky, chad, etc to talk trash. And basically they wouldn't. chad and James got into it but it was on track . And just the sense is that nobody wanted that boost in expectations. And you're right. Cockiness is confidence. And vice versa. Imagine the environment he grew up in. Surrounded by men so completely cocky in their abilities that they would willingly risk their lives on bikes to continue to one-up each other with their tricks. You can't have doubt in that sport. If you do, well you come up short... literally. He was raised around the most aggressive types of athletes, and it simply became who he was. He assimilated into their characters. He backflipped at 10 years old! He was jumping 75' off ramps to dirt! Ever tried that? Its horrifying! He's got this ability on his bike because he removed doubt from his riding. It doesn't fit into that world so he was never burdened with it. Watch him on a BMX bike, or even a scooter. Confidence oozes from this kid.

Id rather hear a little competitive trash talk than a rider reading sponsors off his sleeve and saying how much he likes everyone he races against. Everyone knows it's fake, and it's a boring interview we've heard a thousand times.

The trash talk is a game. Talking the bs will tell you more about your competition than just racing them. If you talk shit and screw with them you can sit back and watch how they react and how they respond in performance or talking back. It’s the same reason cooper Webb does it as well. By doing so and if they react a certain way you automatically know if they are weak and you know for a fact that you have already beat them. He has the mental edge because they now fear any kind of altercation and will back off and keep mouth shut. Not only does that allow him more room to pass but he can just get near and they won’t fight as hard for position. They know he will make a poster of jumping over them and they know he will go harder than they will. They know he has the crowd and internet which has proven to be a bigger competitor than the racers are. He works his ass off to back it up. But he also knows what he is doing.

AMA/Mx Sports chased the racer families out. With help from Feld Entertainment and Ricky Carmichael. Deegan is the only kid from a racing back ground with a Factory ride, for the reason that no one can take the industry money. Remember where Brian’s stamp is.

All I can say is at 17 an 18 you weren't two time smx an outdoor champ . An only in the league two years . Still a kid becoming a young man . . An the fast 250 rider out there .
Of course, everybody talks a little smack in their head and the aim for everybody is to win. But I think most guys don't talk wild is because they recognize it's tacky. Let's not turn Moto sports into UFC where fans feed on toxicity. Personally, I like the guys that build their opponents up and then go stomp them out on race day. I love watching Deegan race and would watch even if he didn't talk crap. Difference being I'd stick around to hear him speak as well.

So I believe that it will not become like the ufc for that reason. In fact it's kind of funny that what qualifies as controversial in our sport is like not even headlines in other sports. Other sports have gross conduct that I don't even need to get into. We hear about it pretty much everyday. In Moto we just don't have a tolerance for that. And that one of the reason we love the sport !!!!!
