With the introduction of blue pholed and a single substrate design the panels will be:
      -More efficient
      -Cheaper to produce
      -Have a standard pixel layout
-Bendable but probably up to the manufacturer

With a lot of people now working from home, it's actually really useful having a USB-C connector on the monitor with support for DP alt mode, PD with enough juice to power a laptop and preferably also USB hub functionality, so that you can just plug in your work laptop with a single cable and easily switch between your home/gaming system and the work laptop. Automatic input switching is also nice to have (looking at you LG). Not saying all monitors should have this, but it would be really nice to see more monitors with both gaming and productivity features.

I love glossy glassy OLED. The picture quality, contrast is 2nd to none. Even QD-OLEDs use the blurry grayed out mess of a screen, ruining the perceived picture quality. All things get old and break. If anything, it gives you a reason to go out and get the shiny new OLED, when your old trashy tv/monitor should be thrown out anyway. Only reason I can think of to cap refresh rate to below what your monitor is fully capable of (taking into consideration it's full capabilities like you mentioned) is for consistency from the GPU. If the 5% lows are too low, that hitching can be incredibly distracting and annoying, so just capping the refresh rate to what your GPU can handle with the game can keep such bad performance from being so jarring.
I'm thinking about Callisto Protocol, very recent game runs like garbage on many PC set ups.

We might see a resolution upgrade to be slightly beyond 4k (2880p maybe) but I doubt anyone is going to care about 8k in the monitor/desktop/laptop space.

Thanks for taking up my question-glad to hear your thoughts on it! I do agree that USB-C cables can be quite convoluted given the amount of variation of capabilities a cable can have without any obvious indication of those capabilities; I wish there were more specific indications on the cables for the capabilities they were rated for. Would be nice as cables usually just get bundled up and put away in a similar location without labeling while also tossing away the original packaging, in my case at least.
My question was formed from seeing the AMD reference models for the RX 6000 series having a USB-C display out. It was also formed while thinking about surpassing the need for a hub/dock for devices like tablets, phones, handhelds, and thin laptops that only have USB-C ports since most of them are relying on USB-C to output a display signal but monitors usually don’t natively support USB-C for display in. Having this feature on monitors would drop the need for a hub/dock and be more simple with only one cable if you’re only looking to get a display out from the device.
Anyway, glad to hear your thoughts on this question and on the many other questions you answered in this Q&A session. Will definitely like to see more of these in the future!

For the questions about where the monitors will go in the future - I completely agree that all of the areas that you mentioned have a massive room for improvement. However, none of the things are easily marketable like "4k" or "240 Hz". Do you expect the industry at large to move towards more strict certifications and standards in order to differentiate their newer and improved products? For example, in 5 years your average buyer will see two monitors with "4k 240Hz HDR10" on the box and think they are exactly the same.

    • @MagiofAsura
      @MagiofAsura Год назад

Hdr already has the displayvesa certification so there already is a range of "hdr10" monitors ranging from we are hdr10 in the sense that it accepts the signal but does nothing to effectively display it to displayhdr1500 monitors that can beautifully blind you when you look at the sun in game with WCG, 1000+ zones, and a stupid high contrast ratio.

Almost everyone else is shoving 4K 144 ULTRA WIDE 78" MONITORS OH EM GEE down our throats. For most of us fps gamers that's nit what we want. 1080p high refresh rate is slowly being replaced with the better resolution high refresh rate 1440p monitors. A lot of people are migrating to 1440p. Just please keep on going with the 1440p content. It's so sparse that I JUST found out that a 1440p hdmi 2.1 monitor came out like a month ago and never knew about it. Been lookong for one forever. And not the 1440p super duper ultra wide 37 inch now that resolution is useless monitor. I'm talking 27 inch pixel density high refresh rate monitor. I found one. A random small youtuber popped up on my feed with a 27 inch 240hz hdmi 2.1 1440p monitor and I was joyous! I have even seen a 360hz 1440p monitor around as well! I thought the extra screen real estate would be enough (or significantly better) for having multiple windows open when creating content/learning new skills and doing work, however, I now wish I had upped to at least an ultrawide screen in size/resolution, though, of course, the graphics horsepower required is more significant, especially in scenarios where FSR or DLSS are not available. Having to Minimise a window while watching something in order to make an adjustment say when learning something new, e.g. when using some design software, becomes tiresome very fast. That is where another 32" screen or ultrawide/4K monitor would be ideal. As for the picture/gaming quality when currently using a 32" 1440p screen, however, I find that to be very good.

Best i can get is most likely going to be a mid range AMD card from their next gen release when ever they plan to release them. The thing is that i use my PC for all my media consumption though. I don't own a TV. So watch Movies, TV, RUclips etc on my monitor. Since most content is moving to 4K, it would make sense to move to 4K as well. At the same time though. I don't wanna pay $1000 to get decent HDR performance and would most likely have to turn the games down to 1440p on the monitor anyway to get decent frame rates with the GPU that i plan on getting in the future.

Personally I even bought the fancy PG27UQ, the first Nvidia G Sync Ultimate display, for the ridiculous $1,200 it was on sale. It even came with the factory calibration paper and everything, and I immediately went into the settings, turned on the wide color gamut, HDR brightness in SDR content, and punched up the contrast. I personally think color calibration looks ugly and drab. There's a reason people always bought the Samsung over LG displays at the store. Yeah LG is more color accurate, but Samsung's vivid mode just looks so much better.
Plus personally I actually prefer the SDR with HDR brightness over true HDR. It means I can have the dynamic range with colors how I want them. That's what I wanted in the first place. Only thing you lose is the rare times games actually support 10 bit color. Otherwise I've honestly noticed that the fake HDR looks more accurate to what it should than real HDR. An example being Final Fantasy 7 Remake the menus are all grey in HDR which they shouldn't be. Every Final Fantasy game shares the exact same deep blue menus and turning HDR off fixes it yet I don't lose the contrast. Some games like Forza Horizon 4 honestly looked more crushed with HDR on with the entire image dimming making the whole image just look bland.

OLED will only make VA and IPS irelevant if it comes down to $400 and lower price point. RN we are seeing very promising OLED monitors around 1000 and that's nice! But that's still top of the line monitor territory, not many people buying at these price ranges, I do expect them to come lower, especially on Black friday and whatnot but still, from 1000 to 400, that's a big gap, and if they ever reach this price point while maintaining high refresh rates and high brightness it will be many many years in the future, where it's very possibli micro-LED is already replacing OLED if it ever does. I can see maybe ink-jet printe OLEDs getting this cheap in the next feew years but they will stil have to diferentiate the low price products to the high priced ones and since you can't slap a faster response time figure or better backlighting since these simply don't affect OLED what's left is just limiting the brightness output, make it only SDR instead of HDR and, of course, lower refresh rates.

@Robert Davidson I mentioned not many people are buying monitors at 1000! Not OLEDs at 1000, that's just a high-end price point! Alienware QD-OLED being frequently sold-out sold out just means there's not nearly the same amount of units being produced as there are cheaper LCD sets. While maybe Alienware sells 200 thousand units of it's QD-OLED $1300 monitors in a given period of time, they themselves proabably sell well over 1 million units of cheaper LCD monitors. And even so, I do'nt believe they move nearly the same amount of units as brands like AOC, or ACER that sells cheaper monitors. There's no two ways about it, for each person with an OLED screen there's a the very least another 10 with an LCD screen, even if you include TVs on this math. Unique, limited production cars sells for millions and millions, and even so, they are frequently sold out even before they actually launch! It doesn't mean there's a large proportion of the population driving around on Bugattis, McLarens or limited production Ferraris, it just means they produced a small enough amount that they could easily sell them even for that price, in fact there's probably only like 10 people with that car, betweeen another 8 billion.

When getting down to choosing the monitor I didn't like the ips glow / low contrast of ips and don't want a curved VA and have to compromise motion blur and have a curved screen to achieve contrast. LG announced this new monitor for me specifically, coincidences do not exist. This thing will sell like hot cakes , hopefully the longevity and build quality is decent at this intro price point. LG know this market is there and salivating. Smart play.

The others two bought [2013-04-03] Dell U2711 A12 - 27” IPS, 1440p @ 60Hz, even for a main video gaming monitor, I'm extremely wary of OLED because of burn in, and £1000+ cost
In Black Friday sales, I passed standby power negated at purchase by a master plug extension switching off all with my PC + Cooler Master Tempest GP27Q not sold in EU yet, if ever?
Standby was a factor for 2011 Samsung TV, went with LG G2 55'' 4K, 40% off £1,400, over LG C2 55" 17% off £1,080, so I will see how good OLED is that way before deciding on a monitor.

As long as the OLEDS have horrendous burn-in issues(which they objectively do) + insane brightness and color degradation in less than a year with normal use, LCD's will be relevant for quite a long time. There's a reason samsung abandoned OLED tech, sold it to LG and now use some of LG's(old samsung tech) OLEDS just to keep with the hype train. As someone who has tested over 100 gaming monitors in the last 5 years, as of this point in time MiniLED/FALD monitors are HIGHLY superior to OLEDS(not in contrast but in longevity and they are close enough in contrast and color quality).

Just pulled the trigger an a cheap Samsung U28R554UQR (28", 4K, IPS, 60Hz), it was on sale for €200 (incl. VAT & shipping). As I am not really gaming, I deem that thing enough for my needs. Beyond the occasional game of building cities and societies and the like I consider it out of the ordinary to play a round of some shooter against some bots...
I'll put that thing to use in CAD, without the need for absolute color accuracy. Otherwise it'll only see office and mostly the web browser with some YT clips in between.
Considering what I otherwise work with (15.6" TN, 24" old TN and newer VA, all 60Hz) that is still a humongous upgrade. I was totally blown away when I unpacked it and set it up for the first time to check for defects.
Forgot to mention: It will be fed mostly by Intel IGP or AMD APU, low tier dGPU at most.

"Difference between each frame" isn't a good way to explain sample and hold blur. It's all about the frame/pixel visibility time in milliseconds, that's exactly what mprt is.
on sample and hold mprt = frametime in ms
blur reduction tech like backlight strobing or bfi is reducing frame visibility time without having to increase framerate+refreshrate.

ICC profiles tend to introduce color banding even on properly dithered color gradients (I think it's because the ICC profiles don't change the response curve of the display, but simply changes the color signal to trick the display into outputting more accurate colors). Is buying a monitor with perfect out-of-the box accuracy the only way to get accurate colors without banding, or is there more "low-level" way to do calibration?

They're pushing up against the physical limitations of copper, it seems. The usb-c cable I use to connect to my M28U monitor is a little under a meter long. If it was longer then it would either not offer the same bandwidth, or it would have to be a hybrid electrical / optical cable which drives up the price significantly. My hope is that eventually, optical connections become part of the usb-c standard, then cheap and extremely high bandwidth cables with long runs would be possible.

    • @rodhester2166
      @rodhester2166 Год назад

@@liamness Agreed. Hopefully optical takes over. For now work doesnt require as fast of response time ect.. Today, USB-C can support various data transfer rates, from 0.48Gbps (USB 2.0) all the way to 40Gbps (USB4, Thunderbolt 3, and Thunderbolt 4). Things are only about to intensify, as today the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) published the USB4 Version 2.0 spec. It adds optional support for 80Gbps bidirectional bandwidth as well as the optional ability to send or receive data at up to 120Gbps.

I always recommend against going for OLEDs for most people who want to keep monitors for 5 years or more. Too many static elements that could accelerate burn in regardless of what you do with it. If you play a certain game or use a program for 100's of hours, then the static UI is guaranteed to leave a mark (Minecraft is a common culprit). This is why Mini-LED is the near-future for PC monitors IMO.

7:43 NO, they cannot replace the DP/HDMI. They don't work, screen starts disconnecting and reconnecting after an initial while of use, because the dedicated GPU works thought the thunderbolt and hdmi sockets and the usbc is from the intel integrated chip on a laptop. And the desktops don't use usbc
I have recently bough a dell g2723h and paired it to a gaming laptop rtx 3060 130W and there is ZERO information on the internet about the problem i encountered.
In my scouring on the windows settings, I ended up in the Nvidia settings from the bottom right of the taskbar, where they show which ports power the monitor in the surround/physX line
Maybe for a laptop that lacks a dedicated gpu and a simple monitor, for a quick use, the usb c is ok. Not for gaming or anything GPU dependent.
