I've been complaining for 2yrs about this issue. Well done, man. Ty! Jeep knows the issue exists, yet there's still no recall on this.
Got the new steering box replaced. Cured all my problems. Highly recommend.
Have 2018 JL low miles all stock street Jeep- just had the dealer install the steel unit TSB. Wobble still there. Not a final solution!
I did my last week and I didn’t think mine was really bad at all. It makes a huge difference and tightens it up a lot. For the ones who are being refused find a new dealer or contact Jeep wave and open a case. NO WHERE in the TSB does it state a inspection has to be done. It also has no build dates listed there for it effects ALL 18-20 JL’s and JT’s. All that being said dealers can only order 1 in every 14 days as of today when I checked to see if we could order more. The 2-doors, 4-doors and Gladiators are all different. Also if your dealer tries to say well Jeep gave us guidelines to follow tell them stop bs’ing you. I am my dealers lead tech and my mangers right hand man so I know what’s going on. Usually I know before he does.
Good to know. Mine is 2 yrs old w/22k miles on it and they're replacing my steering gearbox, along w/another steering stabilizer, 2 tie rod ends and 4 tires that almost bald on one side of each tire. Not mention the paint is rusting right through every panel. Now, I have to go through all this red tape and implement the lemon law in Connecticut. Wish Jeep would get it together.
Hi, I am experiencing the death wobble on my 2020 jeep wrangler with 6k miles on it when I drive in the freeway at 70+ took the car to the dealer who had it for 3 days. According to them they were not able to replicate the wobble after driving it 33 miles. I been recording the issue and asked them if the recordings would be enough evidence to fix the problem which they replied no, I also offer to take one of the tech for a test drive and they told no because they can drive past 65mph as is a safety concern for the staff. How can I get them to fix my car.
It’s 2020 and new jeeps are still dealing with death wobble??! I have an 07 and I just figured that’s what I get for buying an old used Jeep, this is ridiculous
So happy you posted this! Just made an appointment to have my steering gear box changed!! Love your channel!!
I spent many hours trying to solve horrible DW on my JK. It did not go away until I sold it ;-) My current JK is fine as I have not lifted it or put on larger tires. DW is why my next Jeep will be a Bronco
First of all, it is not a recall, so whether you can receive it or not really depends on the mercy of your dealership. You can't do this by yourself even if you purchase the box, because the installation involves ECM flashing, only dealer has the equipment.
Second, this does not necessarily fix death wobble, which is a complex issue involving several components. The new box however will get rid of dead spot in steering wheel as well as tighten up the steering.
Combine this with proper caster, right geometry, track bar frame reinforcement, stronger draglink, tierod, and trackbar, better steering stabilizer, it will get rid of 99% of death wobble though.
I have a 2020 JL Rubicon having the same issues. Only 554 miles on it! Wife won't even drive it .
Went to my dealer today they said no recalls. So I called Jeep and they did open a case and gave me a case #
now my dealer can dig into it. I put a magnet on the steering gear box. It is Aluminum.
Thanks for the video will see what happens.
I feel you there, I bought my JT Rubicon and February, and only have 1500 miles on it now, since I started working from home in March because of c19, but when I do drive it, i'm white knuckle on the wheel, especially if I have to drive down the highway with the construction barricades all over the place. The lanes feel narrow enough without worrying about drifting side to said in my lane...
FYI my earlier post from 2 mo ago and 2021’s - just checked and my 2021 2DrJL Rubicon (Built Date 08-20) definitely has the black painted steering gear box with steel bolts. The steering box has a bar code sticker showing: (S) 43893, (P) 68507571AA, (I) MW50057, (R) 032 and 2020-08-13 date. Hope this helps someone. Only upgrade was 35’s installed on ICON 17x8.5 wheels with NO lift (so far). Steering seems tight with NO wander or wobble.
I can't wait to get this done on my JT Rubicon. I've actually been actively avoiding the highways here in Orlando since I bought it back in February. Luckily, I've been working at home since March, so haven't had to drive anywhere on the highways very often, but when I did, with all the construction barricades and such around here (I-4 construction will never be complete, I swear), the loosey-goosey steering has made me white knuckle the wheel in most cases.
Same here on the white knuckles. I have the one vehicle made for rough roads and I'm afraid of a light bump on the highway. Calling my dealer tomorrow.
My dealership ordered one for me , it's gonna be the first one they work on , i'll let u guys know if it's better when it's installed
Same here! It should be done in the next 2 weeks. Parts ordered Thursday last week. My JT isn't too bad.....but the wife is going to drive it in the winter on the hwy for work. Figured it couldn't hurt to get it done.
@@toddlampron5799 yeah mine after the whole front end is built is way bettwr now and much tighter but i can still feel that play in the steering so i hope that fixes it
Get it done. Period. I didn’t think mine was bad until I got the new design. Do it! The original WILL fail.
Has anyone seen a 2021JL? Have a 2Dr Rubi on order so it would be nice to know that FCA has finally fixed this issue. BTW - I have flat towed a 2013 Fiat Pop since new. It had a slipping clutch issue that FCA fixed OUT OF WARRANTY and I couldn’t be happier with the car. With that experience, I’m hopeful FCA will do what’s right for its Jeep division and current owners. I wish anyone who thinks the first model year Bronco will be without issues the best of luck.
🎉 this happened in the JK Steel Steering box.
I have mine in for the third time to fix the issue. They are putting in the steering dampener for the second time. They NEVER told me about this steering gear box and I just had it in the shop. I called Jeep wave and demanded they put it in. What a joke.
I have a 2018 JLUR (early build). It wasnt as bad as many I’ve heard of but still hid slight play (no death wobble). It was a constant battle to keep in in my lane esp on a rough, unlevel back road. Lifted it 2 1/2 and added 37’s. I was surprised that it didnt make it worse. Still no death wobble.... Had the steering box replace this week and see a huge improvement. Steering wheel has more feel. It seems heavier feeling and no play at all in the wheel. Havent driven it much but plan on getting it out on one of the roads where it was bad in a day or two. To see how it does.
Are they going to replace my tires also? This obviously causes tires to wear at an accelerated rate and they should have to pay for those as well.
Mine was fine until around 20k miles. Now I’m getting a dead spot and a right hand pull.
I installed the synergy sector shaft brace (which has it’s own issues).
It did help and added 1/8” more length to my right side LCA. The pull is gone for the most part. But going in on the 31st to see about the cast steering box
Brian, what do you mean about the Synergy sector brace having it's own issues? I haven't heard anything and I'm about to order one because my JT wanders around on the road so badly. Are people having problems with the brace? Thanks.
Disregard Brian, I'm seeing the discussions now on the Synergy brace on the Wrangler Forum. I've been on the Gladiator Forum where not too much has been written about it yet.
LOTS of folks are being denied! This is total horseshit. My JL is new and I have an appointment to "Diagnose" it. They want it all day. I think this issue needs to be escalated. If I'm denied I'm not going to let it go. I've only had it for 5 days and yes, it wanders all over the place and it's still bone stock.
I had it in the shop on Friday to do a test drive and they said my Jeep drives perfect but they are still going to order the parts in and do it anyways.
@@jamesdeagle6545 2 People I know here were told that there was nothing wrong with theirs. Unbelievable. It's a known, widespread issue.
The TSB plainly says if the owner complains... it isn’t determined by the idiot rep at the dealership... plus Jeep pays the dealer to install
Don't cal a dealer call Jeep they will give you a claim #
Mine wobbled yesterday, only 18K
Seeing dealer at 730am!!!!
Yes just got mine back and it is a night and day difference. Maybe not 100% but like 90% better. So glad #jeep did something about this
Missed my warranty period by 2 months and was told I'll have to out of pocket cost of $972.00 to have it replaced even though I had it documented twice before at the dealership of wondering steering
Love you guys, have had 7 Mustangs so yall have a lot of my money. Now doing this little '21 Rubicon build. Maybe don't throw around the term "Final Solution" though. Do a quick Google on that if you don't know why.
Jeep in Saudi Arabia just ignored the issue. I got the replacement stabilizer but at the time you mede this video they should have known about the steel steering box also. My death wobble returned last week with vengiance, but now my Jeep is out of it's warantee period. United Motors Jeep in Saudi Arabia is the worst experience I have had with aftersales service an have put me off Jeeps for good.
I found the best fix for jeep death wobble traded it in on a Toyota 4 Runner It’s A jeep thing you wouldn’t understand
ha nice.
Exactly, my first/last Jeep, 2018 Sahara JL had death wobble at 2,500 miles, the dealer and Jeep Wave denied it until the tech at the dealer duplicated it. Within a month the dealer had 35 owners on a list, still Jeep denied it. Meanwhile, during my first year of ownership I could/would not take people in the car with me. Unless you have experienced death wobble at 70 MPH with 3 passengers, you have no idea what it means. I had to have the recall work down twice, and it finally reached an acceptable level 14 months into my ownership, just in time to welcome my new friend galvanic corrosion. The Jeep has been traded in on a 4Runner. Jeep / Junk.
@@kirkpaulkirkman9453 Glad you moved on to the quality of the 4 Runner love that power rear window for dogs and camping 🏕
@@shannonzittlow8462 Yes, I never EVER put the rear window in the Jeep. I love the open air (I have/had the soft top). Now, with the 4Runner I will be able to close it easily when it rains. What year/model Jeep did you trade?
I was denied at first. No death wobble. Instead It was pulling hard right, wandering, and had 2" of free play in the wheel. Then this week I printed out the TSB and took it to the dealer. They gave me a bunch of bs about fixing it with a new stabilizer, and only 2% of Jeeps are affected. After they took it for a test drive they came back and said "sir we ordered you a new steering box." I get it done in 2 weeks. I have a 2.5" lift and 35s and they never even said anything about it.
If your wheel is pulling, you've got an alignment issue. The steering box would have nothiing to do with that. Wander, and or death wobble are issues that a secure steering box will help to remedy.
@@Bread996 they did an alignment already and it still pulled. So its something else. The TSB even says it could pull to right or left.
@@MMID303 It's not the steering box. The steering box is your hand on the wheel, but down on the frame. If the steering is pulling you got another issue.
It is 100% the steering box. I had six alignments since January for hard pulling to the right. The dealer installed the AE version of steering box and it is a world better than the AD version. They are installing the new cast iron box on Thursday under the TSB.
@@marksanchez6507 You are a 100% idiot if you think the steering box has anything to do with a constant pull to one side or the other. The only thing the box does is hold the steering direction, and keep that steering heading steady. A loose box can allow vauge steering, and sometimes a death wobble, just like any number of other loose steering or suspesion components. But it will not cause a constant pull to one side! It's impossible!
Just ordered mine, unfortunately not covered since I'm at 93,000 miles but hopefully it is worth the money
how much did they quote ? mine is out of warranty too :/
@@davidlima9784 I’d have to look it up. If I remember it wasn’t cheap. I think under a thousand but not by much.
Surprised that with the high costs of the JLs that they are still giving the death wobble. What was all that extra money for?
Good news!! Jeep is sending my dealer a new gear box for my JL as a recall. Thanks Jeep and CJ Off-Road
What’s even a bigger problem is letting your dealership touch your jeep
I hope hey do come up with a recall instead the TSB, my dealer in Germany didn’t know about it so I have to roll up the story with Jeep Germany.
Got it replaced. Fixed
I can’t wait to show up at the dealership with all of my upgraded steering components (tie rod, drag link, trackbar reinforcement, trackbar, steering stabilizer) and see what they say. Lol
Let us know 😂😂😂, you’re not the only one 😥🏃🏻♂️
I was actually curious, for those that installed additional suspension components (like the Synergy Front Track bar/Sector Shaft Brace) to try and fix the steering issues, will those parts even be compatible with the new gear box?
I ended up just taking my synergy sector shaft brace and steersmarts drag link off before taking it to the dealership. My replacement gear box should be here next week :)
Does this steel steering box come stock on all JLs and JTs now?
A $60k plus jeep Jl shouldn’t have steering issues at 40k miles just outta warranty. Jeep should recall & fix this dangerous steering issue free to their customers. Tired of spending big bucks on junk!
Got this done, but I have my doubts the software was updated properly.
gotta say these are the kinda reasons why i'm hesitating on buying one, luv the look but can't afford to sink $50k down the drain for it to look kool .. on driveway ...
Call Jeep Customer Service and get a claim # before going to your dealer.
Mine new nothing about the steering gear box problem.
Nice video Matt.😊
My 2022 came with the updated steering box. Around 10,000 ish miles and I’m fighting death wobble like crazy and still not been able to be fixed.
Same. Situation here. Any luck?
@@xxBLKSNXxx yes !! Back to loving my gladiator. Fix....was my ball joints !! I went with American Iron ball joint deletes. 37’s will put a hurting on the factory ball joints in a hurry.
@@buckeyejeeper9996 That’s awesome. I had violent death wobble at 9k miles on my 2021 JL after hitting pot holes and bridge transitions really bad. Replaced tie Rod, drag link, trac bar with synergy components and still had it. It’s in the shop now getting new Dynatrac HD ball joints. My ball joints seem fine though but we’ll see!
@@xxBLKSNXxx yes exactly, I changed everything including installing Apex 2.5 ton steering and tie rod ends. I or the shop could find any play in my ball joints. I’d bet 100% you’ll be fixed when you get it back !
@@buckeyejeeper9996 I sure hope so, tired of tracking this thing down! (stock tires here for now though)
Hi, I just ordered a 2021 Rubicon. Do you think the new ones will come through with the steel housing and bolts???
Most likely
The 21’s will have the new gear box
@@thejltech1099 Great TY
Can confirm this, re my 8-20 manuf date 2021
They had to fix it. The new Bronco will not have that.
Should the dealership also do an alignment on them as part of the service?
So the ones now coming off the factory line are coming with the new steel steering box, RIGHT ?
Pretty sure the last of the 2020s still have the old one. The 2021 models get the new one.
@@MMID303 I have a new 2021 Gladiator and the JT wanders back and forth so bad that I don't even enjoy driving it. I'm all over the road. The dealer replaced the steering damper on Tuesday and I didn't notice any improvement. It is so frustrating. I'm assuming I have the new gear box since mine was a Oct.'20 build. Going to have to install a Synergy track bar and sector shaft brace and hope that takes care of it.
Replace the plastic ball joints too!
Do you know if Jeep will; be installing the steel box and bolts for a new 2021 jeeps coming right out of the factory? Or you get the upgrade only if you have a problem?
Can confirm my 2021 JL Rubi (Manuf date 8-20) has the new steering box
Thanks for the video. So are saying that a new 2022 stock Gladiator will not have this issue?
2022 Gladiator max tow, gas. 11K miles. Got the DW today scared the crap out of me. Going to dealership this week
Will this be covered if the jeep is out of warranty??
How do I get the dealership to change the steering box. My dealership has changed the damper twice and still getting wobble of course I complained but they said that’s what Jeep told them to fix.
Just called the dealerships, they said no recall, do you have a recall number?
Here is the TSB: www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/attachments/tsb-08-074-20-pdf-356442-pdf.95902/
Thank you very much!!!
So no fix for the JK?
Is this covered under the Basic 36k mile warranty or 60k powertrain warranty?
I would assume that if this is a TSB it is still covered even if the warranty has expired? Seems like a huge legal liability?
No, a TSB is not a recall.
There is a class action lawsuit in progress over the Death Wobble issue.
It was steel bolts not aluminum
21,000 miles on my 2021 Wrangler JLU. I’ve had all shocks replaced. The rear shocks lasted less than 3000 miles. The rear shocks were replaced, not the front. Then I had the death wobble. My dealer only replaced the steering damper. How long do you think THAT fix will last? Should I request the steering box be swapped out? Just curious.
Did you end up replacing the steering box?
My 21 JL with the steel gearbox has death wobble. This wasn't a full fix by any means.
I have a 2023 4xe and death wobble is still a thing
give jeep propes!!!!!!!!!!!! they are the problem.... i have been driving a jeep since the 90s i'm actualy disabled cause JEEP has safty issues. YET im still driving a jeep wrangler.... I try to avoid parts made in the USA as usually they are faulty or made to low quality standards in the last 10-15 years.
Do you know the part number for this steering unit?
What about if you have lifted the Jeep and the track bar was part of the parts in the install. Will they even think about touching the Jeep? I do have a dead spot but I was going to see if swapping the tie rod and drag link would really fix it. I don’t want to install these parts if I can get this gear box swapped out.
It depends on the dealer. Technically they can't turn you away unless they have proof those parts caused issues. I have the Mopar lift which my dealer installed. I also have an adjustable track bar and a track bar brace. They didn't even mention it. I'm getting the new box in a few weeks.
Still only a bandaid for the Jeep Death Wobble. Specifically the OEM Mopar 2in lift kit which comes with no adjustable track bar or control arms and many cheaper kits come this way also. Have to Just Empty Every Pocket and do it right 0lllllll0 It's a Jeep thing
Do you have the tsb # for the steering box replacement?
My wife had some wobble this morning in her 4dr jl. I just went and checked the power steering box and it is steel. Jeep must have changed with 2021 model year.
The best way to permanently fix the Jeep Death Wobble is to buy the Bronco 😅
Or a 4Runner
Do they give it to you for free
I don't have steering wandering or a pull but I have vibration in the steering wheel when I go over bumps on the freeway. Anyone else have this experience? Idk if I should get it done or not, as to not fix it if it ain't broke, dealership is offering to pay for the cost.
What did you end up doing?
Mine hits at about 70mph after a bump.
@Omer Farooq HD Tir rod and drag links fixed mine. I also have a 3.5 inch lift so I have adjustable lower control arms and adjustable front track bar, but the HD rod and links took it out completely
So even if you life your new Jeep and mod it out they will still do it 🤔 lol I figured it was the cheap lifts people were putting in
Bolts aren’t aluminum lol
get it fixed for $1300.
Isn’t the major issue that Jeep is just a poor quality company?
All steel gear box & bolts, not aluminum, cool straight from factory not wear, not alignment, fix & Ram makes a similar identical steering unit that is 30% larger than jeeps. That is the way to real fix the problem for good, & if u up size tires u r still good. I God Want The Ram Steering box On All Bronze Rubicons & up that come down the line. Lowest model allowed to b made of ppl car. When it comes to steering & the reputation of the brand Jeep & God will hve to cover r ass NOW & over Kill it & make it right at the extreme load range & hard working it over time.
wtf are you talking about, speak english?
Wha-whaaaat? Missing 'grammar', reward offered 🤦♀️
Good old expensive and unreliable jeep. If it was made after 98, I would never buy one. Jeeps are absolute TRASH.
I just traded a 2004 wrangler I had owned Gor many years and never had any problems with it other than a coil pack,I have a 2013 and a 2016 jeep wrangler, only problem with them has been the heater on the thirteen and a busted left side brake hose that caused a shake and wobble to the front end,,it quit after replacing the hose,,73000 miles,,2016 wrangler has had no problems yet,,63000 mile,,I love both of them and they have been great for me and my wife
