  • In this video I take a Winchester XPR to the range and shoot the 190 gr ABLR Winchester ammo. We also shoot some handloaded 190 gr ABLR. I compare it to the 6.5 PRC to see how it stacks up. Hope you enjoy the video!

    Modern Shoulder and Modern Cartridge Design are Hornady marketing terns used to sell their ammo. In the ranges I have hunted in my life, I see little to no benefit in changing from my 35 Whelen, 300 win mag, and 30-06.

    • @hunterjohnson5635
      @hunterjohnson5635 6 месяцев назад +5

      Yup, this. Hornady wants you to sell all of your guns in your standard calibers (.308 .270 and .30-06) and buy their AMAZING AND NEW AND GREAT AND INCREDIBLE CARTRIDGES.
      Mind you though, they are more expensive. Have feeding issues due to the sharper shoulder lengths and by far the biggest grievance I have is that they have much less capacity.

    I’m a big Hornady hater myself. I hate their business model shift. They also hate my beloved .277” caliber likely because of the 6.8 Western. They under-load the .270 (all manufacturers do) and won’t release quality bullets in the caliber because they themselves aren’t invested in it (funny how things change due to Hornady putting their name in the cartridge game)
    They are also leading the charge to change our traditional imperial units to metric because they want people to think that imperial units are outdated and uncool. Whether you think I’m schizo or not, it’s a big deal and an attempt to metrify the world in unison.

      Sure but that’s a maybe. Also, enjoy the lowered magazine capacity, feeding issues, mediocre performance sub 500 yards (shouldn’t take a shot past 5-600 yards in general) and barrel life.
      There’s truly nothing new under the sun and these Hornady bullets accomplish nothing new. The .270 and the .30-06 own the standard cartridge realm and likely will until we get laser guns.

    If I were going after BIG game, moose or brown bear, and I had to choose, I would take the 190 grain .30-06 all day long, maybe that's just the 59 year old "fudd" in me. But I have to admit the 6.5 PRC is a pretty damn respectable cartridge with impressive ballistics and seems very versatile. I really like the 6.8 Western as well. I don't have a dog in the fight as I don't own any bolt guns, I only hunt coyotes and hogs here in Texas so I use AR rifles and pistols. I guess my "fudd" cartridge is 7.62x39, but my new hipster cartridges are 350 Legend, 300 Ham'r and 450 Bushmaster. I guess that makes me a cool "fudd".

    Any time you are running a ladder test if you plot your data points on a line graph and it looks like mountain peaks and not some semblance of a curve it's time to do some legwork. Ask the questions, how can this be, why is this, could I have made one or more errors along the way? 54@2696 49.92FPS/G 55@2809 51.07 FPS/G 56@2772 49.5 FPS/G 57@2821 49.49 FPS/G. I'm going to see this data and say "I've made a mistake at the bench!. What has led me to this mistake?, and what do I need to do different to be certain that I am not making mistakes?".
    I understand that these results can and do occur at times but in a case like this I'm starting over and if the data is not somewhat similar on round 2 it's time to rethink my processes and focus at the bench.
    Purpose of a ladder test is to find your sweet spots and dead spots. If that limited data has truth to it then it would appear that your sweet spot lands somewhere between 54 and 55 grains.

Unless it's a family heirloom rifle there's no reason to shoot the weak 30-06. If recoil is an issue the 308 is better. If it's energy or velocity you want (over the 308) there's likely a half dozen better options. At what distance was the gel for the test? .308win will have a more devistating wound channel out to 300ish yards because of the diameter of the bullet but after that, the 6.5CM will retain it's velocity from there to way out beyond the .308's capabilities. The 6.5CM has a higher BC also. For hunting out to 300ish yards the .308win is awesome but after that "6.5 CM". Hunted with the .308win most of my life and now using 6.5CM. what drives me crazy is these channels promoting the new cartridges that compare old projectiles in the older calibers to new projectiles in the newer calibers. For example, backfire said in his 6.5PRC profile video that the 6.5 prc has more energy than a 30.06 past 160 yards. This was my repsonse..."Subscriber of a long time who loves your content, but the part about the 6.5 prc having more energy than the 30.06 from 160+ is just not accurate. If you compare a 6.5 eldx to a 3006 core lokt, sure. However, when you compare premium loadings of each, it's far from the case. I just checked Winchesters expedition big game long range loading with the ABLR for both the 6.5 prc and 30.06. All of the way out to 800 yards, which is as far as the program allows me to see, the 30.06 has more energy. If you want to talk about the merits of modern projectiles, that is great, but that is not exclusive to modern cartridges."

      Not the "most scientific" method using custom load data vs box data? Vs factory ammo. Using 1 round strings for velocity etc.
      However I am impressed with your handload and the results in accuracy were certainly surprising especially the factory winchester with that wierd crimp.
      I could see why someone might choose the 06 vs a 6.5 prc and vice versa application and personal preference applies. However I think the statement "30-06 is a 6.5 killer" is not accurate. I believe there is definitely some overlap and if someone were hunting elk within 400 yards it could be a better choice especially if the hunter has more confidence in it due to whatever personal experiences and or preconceived notions they may harbor.
      But I'll tell tell you that the 6.5 prc is going to kill an elk just as dead at ranges even perhaps further than the 06. Hell the 6.5 creed kills elk dead as does the 308. My niece shot a cow elk @ 400 yards with the creed 143 eldx double lung 700# cow went 30 yards.
      The guy I know that's shot the most elk has done it with a 250 savage ai with 80 grain ttsx @ ranges beyond 400 yards he uses a high shoulder shot.
