What I have found is that if you focus hard on wiping out the vampires in Cathay in the first few turns, you can take at least one city (therefore having a foothold in Cathay) and sell Shang-Wu for a free 20k. The reason this is free is because you are "selling" it to the Jade Custodians, who are usually your first confederation anyways so you just get the city back for free almost immediately. Im not sure how intended of a cheese that is but I havent seen anyone else talking about it.

    • @ElvenPlotArmour
      @ElvenPlotArmour  11 месяцев назад +5

Mate, I never even considered that as a play. Certainly risky as you aren't guaranteed to get that confed early or they could get wiped, but that ignores the fact you can have a perfectly strong campaign while never having set foot in Cathay at all. Nice thinking, cheers for sharing!

Nice guide, can't replicate that fully because there are some changes. You start now with Gate Master and there are two armies on orcs to beat before you can reach Floating Pyramid, so You can't force march and you have less movement. Guide still very useful. Thanks!

Great video as usual. Discovered your channel recently and have been on a bit of a binge.
I would like to explain the Matters of State mechanic a bit further, as it was a tad unclear in the video and I saw quite a bit of confusion about it online when Yuan Bo was first released. When you spend a Steel or Stone Token, it will always put an equal amount of the opposite token in the queue; it isn't in any way a random process. As an example: If I were to spend two Steel Tokens on an action, that would give me two Stone tokens, but I'd have to wait five turns for each to come online (barring any battles won). You end up with four Stone Tokens. The same applies In the opposite direction: spending those four Stone Tokens gives you four Steel Tokens, with a five turn waiting period for each one. It helps to think of harmony: You have to spend Steel to be able to do Stone actions, and you have to spend Stone to be able to do Steel actions. Alternatively: Just think of them as all being the same type of token, they just change colour when you spend them. You start with four tokens, and gain a new token each time you declare a tier three or higher province capital to be either a Fortress City or Commercial District, up to a maximum of eight total tokens. What happens is you spend the four tokens to declare the action; and five tokens show up in queue instead of the usual four. (you want to declare them regardless, the bonuses they grant to the city you declare on are wild).
As for the compass directions: the tier three landmark building in each of the four locations that you have to build is always the same, but grant excellent bonuses. Each one of them also grants plus two to the Astromancer hero capacity. Pair this with the two you get from the faction trait and the two you get from Yuan Bo's Celestial Court Overseer skill, and The Jade Court effectively grants you a total of twelve extra Astromancers over the course of your campaign.
Also, get the first point of Yuan Bo's unique tree practically the moment he hits level twelve: plus five to the recruit rank of all Dragon Blooded Shugengan and Astromancers is great, and can really help carry your dual campaign expansion.
A fun little bit of lore trivia: Stone and Steel being tied to matters of state in Grand Cathay actually precedes Yuan Bo's release. The Lands of Stone and Steel has been a province in central Cathay for a while now. It's description (which I just look up in the wiki, no real idea how to find province descriptions ingame) states that stone and steel represent the divine matters of state (hence the the name of the mechanic). Stone represents structure, foundation and planning (and as such Stone actions tend to help you administratively and diplomatically), whereas steel represents action, reactiveness and initiative (and as such Steel actions tend to help you militarily). The Land of Stone and Steel province has both a marble and an iron resource available, because Warhammer.

Appreciate the viewership but even more, thanks for this amazing writeup. I'll be doing a campaign mastery on Cathay very soon and have clipped your advice to integrate into my testing and scripting, so thanks very much. It's hard to develop things as thorough as you'd like in early access and I appreciate everyone who takes the time to share their strategy. Really love how your strategiesfeed into each other and play off one another. Thanks for the great read and happy hunting mate!

@@ElvenPlotArmour Thanks for the kind words, I am happy to have helped.
I don't even own the game yet, I just like theory-crafting, strategy and Warhammer lore. I just haven't had the time yet to make the plunge. If I could be of any further assistance, I might have some more notes that could help.
      1) It might be helpful to share that you can change between the Yin and Yang versions of buildings. CA put out a patch that removed this mechanic, and almost immediately reverted that change. Quite naturally, a lot of confusion ensued.
      2) In the early game Yang lords, with the first tech as well as route marcher, can really help your early game mobility. Bureaucrat is my favourite Yang trait, as it reduces building costs in the province by ten percent, and is available to both lords and heroes.
      3) Only one caravan can be sent out at a time, but caravans that are returning home don't count. Keep two caravans active at a time: when one starts its travel home, send out the other.
      4) The Wu Xing Compass affects all Cathayan factions. (Do the Great Bastion Gates buildings still decrease the realignment cooldown at tier five?).
      5) The Western borders of Cathay are a lot less clear cut than the others (a near impregnable wall, an ocean border and Ind not existing), with many potential threats that could emerge (Grimgor, the Chaos Dwarfs, maybe Ghorst or Kugath, a particularly cheeky Vilitch who decided to take the long way round). How to deal with that properly deserves a place somewhere in the guide.
      Yuan Bo specific notes:
      1) Both declaration options boost the effects of certain building chains, with every chain providing a unique bonus. Commercial Districts add extra bonuses to any infrastructure and trade resource buildings you build there, as well as any ports and the settlement chain itself. There are major settlements for every type of trade resource except Tusks, though if you want you can get the benefits from the Tusks buildings by declaring a Commercial District in the Ogre mountains. Most of the benefits are economical, though a few aid your armies. Generally speaking you will want to build these. Fortress City's add bonuses to any military buildings built in the settlement, as well as the Great Bastion buildings (those should always be Fortress City's, they (quite logically) gain no benefits from being Commercial Districts). These benefit your military far more than Commercial Districts do, so you will want a few of them around. Most bonuses are faction-wide, and as such you can mostly just place what you need at the time, with a few exceptions. The settlement buildings of Commercial Districts boosts the income of the province and as such larger provinces should be Commercial Districts. If there is a port or resource in the capital, they should probably also be Commercial districts. In Fortress City's local bonuses are provided by the Garrison and Armoury buildings: Garrisons grant you a lot of extra defensive supplies in the province while Armoury buildings grant a permanent armour bonus to units recruited in the province. Therefore these should be built in border provinces where you are likely to be attacked, as well as any recruitment province.
      2) The Command the Lesser Courts action states that the bonus you choose is permanent, with only one of the four able to be active at any time. Last I checked this was a lie; it only lasts ten turns. You might want to check that as well.
      3) When building the Astromantic relay buildings, make sure that you have sufficient force in the area to defend the settlement for five turns. The armies will start to spawn immediately on building construction, so ensure that the other local threats are sufficiently contained when it happens. You might want to make them Fortress City's beforehand and/or build up the garrisons if you have minimal force or if you are otherwise engaged in the area.
Future video suggestions (no real rush to any of them, just getting these out there):
I liked the recent beginners guide, it was really good. Could you perhaps do a video on fighting asymmetrical battles? I'm thinking things like: how to make the most out of an ambush (what to prioritise when you get the jump on an army, as well as how to minimise the damage when you get jumped), how to defend unwalled settlements (Wood Elves, Ogres, Beastmen and Norscans come to mind, but useful for others as well) as well as underway intercept type battles. Advice for holding on to difficult territory would be nice: places like the north of Ulthuan or the Badlands, places you will end up taking in a campaign but can't fully pacify for quite some time or will drag you further and further away from where you actually want to go if you aren't careful, like with northern Naggarond.
(The rest is all High Elf specific stuff)
Speaking of holding on to difficult territory: I have been an Imrik fanboy ever since I read the lore on Dragonsongs a few years back and an elf fan for a few years longer than that (and an Eldar fan for even longer still; I have a type), and as you are the guy to go to for anything Imrik related, I have take this opportunity: A guide on how to hold onto Caledor economically (The Hall of Dragons landmark combining with the Grave of Dragons landmark and the Exotic Animals tech is spicy indeed, especially with a clutch Tyrion confed for one turn global recruit Sun Dragons, but I'd rather not cripple my progress in the Badlands), as well as an overview how the generic dragon encounters work & what to do with them (nobody has done anything on them, I could find absolutely nothing on them) are the two Imrik guides I still need. As an aside: does the recruitment reduction from the "Dragon Willed" trait also affect global recruitment? Also: When do you send a hero to the Eastern Colonies as Imrik?
As for the rest of the High Elves: a saving Teclis as Tyrion guide, because Tyrion needs his brother to come home safely, getting the White Tower of Hoeth reasonably quickly as Teclis (seriously CA, not even a questline?), as well as how to get the medicinal herbs resource as the three Ulthuan factions for that replenishment tech would all mean a lot.
Hope you have a good day, I look forward to seeing the campaign mastery guide soon.

Yes it's very corporate, which is antithetical to a happy gamer client base, imo.

I had no issue with the Chaos Dwarf DLC price because there was a lot. But that price as a new standard is not okay I feel.
It's strange... It is the first DLC since WHTW1 came out that I haven't immediately bought.
Anyway, I also don't feel like that's in any way something you in your capacity as strategy guide maker should necessarily comment on. It's just that I use your guide also for making this choice and I'm actually thankful to you for providing that.

Or are those without limit so you can (in the late game) add one more each time you have 4 token of the same colour?

Moving the hero in a another direction will consume some of its movement. Too much movement consumed will slow down the army once that hero joins (it can only move as far as the unit with least range). The idea is to avoid either unit backtracking to not compromise the reach of the army.
