I personally have never broke the side cover or covers. Most common you will break 1st gear or reverse gear and even blown complete spider gears and I've only run stock too 1641 cc engines,but all 7 transaxles I've blown have been in baja bugs running 30 inch tires or bigger
The transaxle that have 1 side cover would be 1973 or later. Dual side covers are from 1968 1/2 too 1972. But in Mexico & Europe they used different transaxles and gears because they used the 1300cc dual port motors. America was about bigger is better.
Those are called transaxles and the highest horsepower came from the factory was 58hp from the Volkswagen dual port engine.

i have a pro drag type 1 made by rancho and im close to 400 ponies no issues
