Join us for our traditional Easter picnic out in the sagebrush where we roast hot dogs and marshmallows on the Extended Grill Plate using the Adjustable Fire Grate. Then I show how I clean my Folding Firebox Stove and all its parts.
One thing I do to my Firebox Gen 2 when there are stubborn stains that cannot be removed by scrubbing alone is to submerge it to vinegar folded for a day or two before scrubbing lightly. This is effective for me especially when removing rust especially here from where I am where steels rusts easily because of the weather and environment. Vinegar is the best way to remove rust without any harmful chemicals and works everytime also on other steels. Hard scrubbing done many times will sometimes make steel thin. You should add a video on how to remove rust and stains on the firebox, I mean different ways. I know there are lots of them but hopefully this helps others too. Love my firebox, been using it here in the Philippines for a couple of years now and still standing strong. Thanks Steve!
That is awesome to hear! Thank you for the suggestion, makes sense that vinegar would work for cleaning it. I appreciate the suggestion! A lot of people ask how to clean it and so this will help. Thanks for the support, I am glad to hear you are enjoying your G2 stove out there in the Philippines! Have fun out there, Cheers!
Great tip, Vinegar!

Thanks for tutorials cleaning firebox
The red or maroon scotch brite pads are pretty awesome for cleaning carbon off of metal. I am a mechanic and use these all the time to clean engine parts and what not. They are a must have in any shop, and I probably would have used them anyway without seeing this video. Planning on getting a Firebox stove real soon! You're a total genius, and I can't wait to use one of these amazing stoves!
Thanks so much for your kind words!
What are they called?
You should include a couple in with The Firebox. They would help people who don’t have access to scotchbrite pads. Maybe include some in the accessories pack too. 👍🏻
I'm right with you brother, that's exactly what I do with my pots. I keep them in a disposable grocery bag to keep the soot contained then wash up when I get home. I like to keep my camping trips as easy as possible!
Yeah the red pads are awesome, I use them on all my stainless cups, stove etc, great to keep a couple in your bag.
I really enjoy and use mine a lot as well. Thanks for watching!
Yeah, That's how I've done it in the past but these red scotch brites really work a lot faster and easier. And I like keeping the stove dry, a bit less messy.
Thanks a ton for the ongoing support!
Hey Steve I researched alot of high quality bomb proof stoves and the search always brought me back to .....well you know .The Firebox. So I asked for one for my 50th birthday. When I finally had it in my hands and camped twice with it since (b-day was aug /3) I said to myself very wise choice. Then I managed to get the extended kit and a trangia and havet looked back.I do like the look of the new one has the cut outs on the bottom which would be easier for constant heat control.Cool design. All in all a solid 10 out of 10 Keep up the good work.....solidly ,,,,,,,,,,Steve.
+steve brydges Thanks so much Steve! I'm glad you're loving your Firebox stove!
Just learned so much again from you're video.
Put the fire sticks on the ends to keep the hot dogs from rolling off.
Outstanding! 👁️♥️🔥📦👌🤠👍
Thanks James! I'm glad you find my videos useful 👍😎
If It weren't for the fact that I do these video's I probably wouldn't clean mine either. Really the only difference is the color. I think keeping it dry, brushing out the loose ash and burning off anything else would suit me fine.
Thanks for the comment!
yes to the red scotch brites
Thanks for the Feedback on the new Firebox accessories Brian!
You are very welcome! Thanks for the suggestion!
I just received my firebox and used it for a NY strip followed by smores last night. Thank you so much for the invention and this cleaning video. I enjoy watching your short instagram videos and look forward to your new recipes. I’m happy to have this contraption to make yakitori at my next duty station in hawaii!!! Happy Holidays! Thank you 😁
I'm so glad you're enjoying your Firebox stove thank you so much for your ongoing support!
OK, Thanks, that's why I asked.
All the best, Steve
Very helpful video. Yes to stocking the Red.
Thank you, glad you found the video helpful!
Hi Steve thanks for showing this video the additional plates really are great additions i will be putting mine to good use cheers Buddy all the best BriBo
That is awesome it cleans up so well. I don't really out much effort into cleaning mine, usually just brush it off and keep using it. I love it. My canvas is a mess, but I put it right in the Firebox pouch, so it's all contained on the inside and doesn't spread to anything else in my pack. I use my it everyday too, so I am also just not that interested in cleaning
Hey whatever works for you. We do recommend oiling it down after each use at least to help with maintenance and life span. Glad you have been out enjoying your Firebox and making great food, thanks for the support!
@@fireboxstove yes, I do oil it whenever I bet any sort of moisture on it. It's survived rain storms and snow storms. I just don't bother to much when everything is dry and it's nice weather that isn't creating a bunch of moisture. Thanks for the videos
a couple weeks ago i ordered the firebox 8" cook kit.....was totally impressed. Great quality cook wear. Just recently ordered the Master G2 kit.....i strongly recommend selling the maroon pads on the site, make it a one stop shop and offers more info for customers. I am in the stucco/ plaster business, and use these maroon pads to clean up all my tools and equipment. My original plan was to have one in my stove kit. Figured if they cleaned cementuous products off my tools, they will clean up the stove. Have plenty of other suggestions as well. Would like to be in touch with you. Thank you for the amazing products
We do sell those cleaning pads here: www.fireboxstove.com/scotch-brite?search=scotch. Thanks!! I appreciate your order and support, so glad you are enjoying your gear! Have fun out there Mike!
Thanks much for the feedback!
My process with the Gen2 is to let it cool, dump out any coals or remaining wood and then I do a full proper washdown with soap ,water and a scotchbirte when I return home. When I'm out in the bush, I just give it a wipe down and slight oiling between cooks
That is great, you don't necessarily have to wash it down......oiling works just fine we have learned. Thanks for your support Aash!
Thanks for listening to my request to make a 'cleaning' video. I appreciate the time to do this, especially during Easter :)
Yeah, what he said! Ha ha, you just made my day! very funny :)
Thanks!
I wipe washing up liquid over the outside of my stainless steel pots before use and the soot washes off very easily after. I wonder if that tip will work on the inside of the Firebox. I'll have to give it a try. I wipe over the stove with cooking oil after use before storing it for any length of time also. White vinegar is also a great product (as has been said) for removing rust especially from cast iron pans.
Great idea burning off the grease for a dry clean up. Little muss or fuss. Here we have major black bear issues, so its always good to get all food smells off the gear before packing it. That burn-off method should work just fine to achieve that. I can pick up the red scotch brites around here, so not sure how many you would sell?, but good idea to sell anyway. I encourage folks to get the Heavy Duty bag or the "Ugly" bag for packing and storage, and then soot is not an issue. Pack and go!
Good video for me. Just ordered my setup this past sunday.
Thanks Chris!
Yeah, I wouldn't clean my stove as much if not for these video's, I would just burn it clean and pack it up.
Thanks for the comment!
For sure you should carry the red Scotch-Brite Pads.
We do have them here: www.fireboxstove.com/scotch-brite?search=scotch. Thanks!!
Great vid.
Good times with family in nature's...
familyroom.
Maybe leave the pad out inexchange for something in the future a bit, well, cooler.
Great video. Have you done a video, on how to get rid of waste and rubbish? Yes, you should carry them. With where you live, is there a high risk of fires?
Thank you Robert. We have not done a video on that yet but will check into it. There is a very high risk for fires in Utah, we are in a drought.
It's best to keep the Firebox dry.
Thanks for the comment
Yes on the Red Scotch Brite pads! ✅👍🏻😊
They work great!
Can’t wait to get a firebox for Christmas and try it out
You will love it!! Thanks for watching!
Firebox Stove yes definitely I can’t wait to get out with my 2 children and set up camp somewhere and cook something cool on it .... is their a book I can get with all the different ways it can be used ? I might try and do some tandoori chicken on a tandoori oven
No mainly just the videos to be honest. You can see our cookbook on our site as well. It is free and has printable pages. The videos offer the most information you can find.
Firebox Stove that’s cool I do enjoy watching the videos I find they charge me up and make me want to start heading out lol but the weather is poor at the moment hire in the uk but not much longer left then I will definitely be out and about I know the kids will love it
Steve , You know what You SHOULD have used to pick up those dogs with !....
Lol yep, sure do!! Thanks for watching John!
Followed the link from a 2018 video. "Here's Emma." My first thought: Scroll down and see how old the video is. LOL! Kids grow SO fast!!!
They really do! It is sad. I enjoy your family and all these memories. Thanks for watching!
thats what i use but i put mine in the sink with hot soapy water then scrub with the scotch
brite works a treat
The cleaning pad with a paste made of water and ashes might speed the cleaning process..
thanks for your info
My pleasure Patrick, Thanks for commenting!
Just caught this video.
Also, just received my stove.
Question, before the first burn, what should I do to my stove to keep it lasting longer ?
Vegetable oil ?
Mineral oil ?
Motor oil ? (If so, will 10W-30 be good enough ? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Just kidding.)
Thank you for the videos !
Keep up the great work !
Ever thought of making a fire box that's 8 by 8 gives u more surface and still small enough to fit in a back pack ?
We have a few things in the works right now, keep your eye out. Thanks for the feedback by the way!
We need to get you set up with some New Mexico green chili to roast on there
Yes, I love roasted green chilies!
make fire cook, make fire clean, perfect
Thanks!
I never clean the firebox itself. As for the firesticks and the grills, we use small amounts of steel wool and throw that away afterwards. That's it :)
Thanks for the feedback Chris. Sounds like the way to go. Maybe a little oil on the stove occasionally and your set until the next use.
Thanks for commenting.
Great Video. Do you use this method, after all types of cooking, or just with sausages?
It really just depends on what I cook. I try to keep it wiped down most of the time and then give it a good cleaning when I get home from trips. Thanks for watching!
thank you have bmore fun sir
Thanks for watching!! 😎
The Fire box is awesome, I love it, thanks very clever design. Being able to have multiple uses & multiple fuel.... absolutely amazing. When I get into something I tend to really research, I found out this is the best, as far as I'm concerened. What oil would you use to lightly coat it? Thanks Steve from UK.
Hi Steve, That depends on how long it will be in storage, if it will be a while I would recommend mineral oil or olive oil so it won't go rancid. For shorter durations I use whatever's available, any fat will work and if it does start to spoil a bit between uses it's easy to burn off. Thanks for the question!
Wow that was a quick reply, thanks for your reply, Olive oil it is.
What’s the difference?
Hi Steve, is the firebox dishwasher safe??? Regards Lee
Hello Steve. Great video as usual. I'm a little confused though. In another video didn't you say not to place the grill plate over the open flames because it can warp the plate?
Anthony Gregorio That's correct. In this video I don't put it over the Flames I put it on the side of the fire the temperature difference is considerable. The idea is to get the grill plate hot enough to burn off the mess but not so hot that you damage it.
I was referring to the part when you place the adjustable grill plate over the open flames and then place the charcoal over it. Sorry if I confused you lol.
The red is better ,the is more for kitchen stuff.
if my fire box is blue or gold is that okay? I clean my fire box with a sos pad . thank from Canada .
Are red Scotch Brites recommended for the titanium Firebox?
It won't hurt to use one but with the Titanium there really is no need. You can just wipe it down and it will keep the blue patena on it. If you use the scotch Brite it will rub some of that off.
@@fireboxstove Thx
I'm not familiar with red Scotch-Brite. How do they differ from the green?
The red or I think they're actually called maroon Scotch-Brite are more aggressive than the green. But I don't really use the scotch brides Much anymore. Generally just a light coat of oil between uses cleans and protects the Firebox because you wipe your oil on liberally then wiping it back off with a dry paper towel cleans the surface quite well other than the thin coat of oil is Left behind
I was referring to the part when you place the adjustable grill plate over the open flames and then place the charcoal over it. Sorry if I confused you lol.
Anthony Gregorio it's a matter of flow. Having the charcoal on top of the adjustable fire grate slows down the flow of heat traveling through the adjustable fire grate. If you put a grill plate on top of a full roaring fire with nothing on top it will get much hotter as the heat flows freely through the grill plate.
I understand now. Makes perfect sense. Thank you. My girlfriend and I are doing wilderness camping for the first time. I'm planning on fishing at a large reservoir where there is large lake trout. I'd like to use the grill plates for grilling up some trout and you have given me the confidence to do it. Maybe I can send you a video on our trip using the firebox.
Anthony Gregorio sounds awesome! I would love that. Either way I hope you have a great time!
What type of oil do you suggest to stop corrosion?
It really doesn't matter which oil is used, I use whatever food grade oil is around, but for long term I would use Olive Oil or Mineral Oil whatever won't go rancid. Thanks for asking!
Hello Steve you said the grill plates should not be placed on the flames yet you just put the plate on open flames and placed briquets on top same with the extended plate however the coal is hotter so then I am confused please help me understand , thank you
hani karam I know it can be confusing and seem counterintuitive. The charcoal briquettes on top of the adjustable fire grate are absorbing Heat from the metal which regulates its temperature somewhat. Then once the briquettes are going and there is no longer flame underneath, the heat from the briquettes Rises. If you build a regular fire then put the extended Grill plate above that regular fire with no meat or food on it the metal will almost immediately overheat. If the extended Grill plate has food on it the food will absorb heat from the extended Grill plate regulating its temperature and preventing the material from overheating. Think of it like a frying pan on a stove top. A high heat with no food in the frying pan will almost surely damage the frying pan. It's the same with the grill plate, food prevents it from overheating. The briquettes on top of the adjustable fire grate Act similarly to the food in the fact that they absorb heat from the adjustable fire grate until they themselves start producing heat but at that point I do not have a fire underneath.
Had I not placed the charcoal briquettes on top of the adjustable fire grate the Flames would have damaged the adjustable fire grate.
HI Steve thank you for replying and last question please Sir in case and just in case that is if adjustable plate and the larger one got subjected to flames what sort of a damage would might be , thank you again Steve and can not wait to use mine . all the very best to you and all your loved ones Steve .
I bought mine with the upgrade from (Canadian outdoor equipment) 3 years ago but broke my fingers however will be using it this end of summer
hani karam if the grill plate is overheated it's can become warped and misshapen
is the fire box all stanless steel ?
Yes it is all stainless steel. Here's a video which explains the different colors and more about caring for the Firebox, starts at 5:28
Thanks for asking.
