Let’s power up the Boeing 747-8

- Hello friends out there! How do you do?
We were fortunate the other day to pitch up at the aircraft and maintenance personnel were just about to power up our aircraft, a Boeing 747-8. As I had a trainee with me, I thought I’d take the opportunity to let him go through the procedure if establishing power on the aircraft which would involve starting the APU as there was no external power. Ordinarily, 99% of the time we get to the aircraft from flight dispatch and it is already powered up and ready for us - so this was a rare instance but valuable for training as it were😀
Hope you like it! Chi Di Gin! Later!✈️✈️✈️✈️
You have my respect, Captain. God bless your journey. Greetings from Brazil 👋
@@Henrique_747 greetings to you in Brazil😀
A King and his Queen of the Skyes. Thank you Captain Obet, for teaching us so well.
🖖
I once had a car that took longer to start ;-)
Thank you Captain, you don't know what a good example you set for many of us
I hope they'll still be around when I become a pilot 🇿🇼
And we are very happy, that you shared this rare event with us! 😎 TYVM!!
Thanks for showing how you switch on the 747 so to speak. I always wanted to see how its done
Cap’n- What a treat to watch you gents breathe life into this queen!
WOW excellent and outstanding training Captain. Have always safe and blessed travels
Ahoy from Nova Scotia! Thanks for sharing.

God bless you Cap.
@@الدكتورلتشخيصالسيارات God bless you too😊
I just literally fell onto this video.
Wow what superb training and teaching you're passing on.
I've subscribed Captain!
Best from me Down Under in Middle Earth!
Later!
Enjoyed the video. Thanks!!
Amazing how quiet it is prior to startup!
great video captain.. very nicely explained
Good to see Wayne
Thank you for doing these amazing captivating educational videos!
CAPTAIN OBET, THE BEST PERSON TO FLY WITH💥💥🙏🙏
Merci pour ces explications très pédagogiques . Je fais de la simulation et enfin je trouve une explication au pourquoi de l'activation de certains boutons.
👍👍👍👍🤙 great videos, captain
FO didn’t say Later! ha ha.. great video as always, Capt..
So interesting to watch. Thank you for sharing
That was awesome. That information is so secretive! Especially with a 747-400 and -8 no less. Now just have to learn how to power up the engines! Very very nice. Please keep coming out with more vlogs!!
Fascinating stuff! It's nice to see most of the instruments in the flight deck are still analogue.
Fantastic SIR
Always great seeing you and your videos Sir Captain Obet.
Captain was departing Sydney on Monday on a domestic work trip and saw the Cathay 747-8 at the cargo terminal.
Again super performance - 👍
Awesome.
Smart guy
Lovely video captain
I saw this on the Captain’s IG. Super informative!
Don't forget the crew meals check.
cool guys🙂👍👍👍👍
Thanks Captain , I enjoyed the video. Educational. Thanks
We love you captain.
@@TafadzwaMapamula thank you
Thank You Captain. Great video.
Hey didn't you appear in @Sam Chui's video 1 week ago? Great to see you, nice video.
@@AviationxMonkey yes I did
nice job! I really like your videos.
Cool😊
Great clip as always Capt...I am a fan of all your vedios....just a quick query, did we missed to do APU fire test before firing up or is it not in check list anymore?
We don't do that. It's a maintenance function. Plus after you turn the apu off the apu will enter a cool down phase, which the fire system will be automatically tested.
I'll watch again and again till i know this by heart!!!!
Thanks for uploading ❤
Thanks Captain!
Awesome! We hardly get to see stuff like this. I'm a little surprised the checklist didn't call for a fire test of the apu prior to startup
@@traffictraffic new Boeing procedure does not require it as it will shutdown and automatically discharge extinguishers too on ground.
@@pilot_obet ah okay thanks!
Outstanding as always Capt Obet - sure appreciate the time and professionalism. Great checklist explanation - you stated certain items are where they are and why. Are those items verified to be in the correct position prior to engaging the battery (gear handle, flap, hyd pumps, etc)? For example, if the flap handle been inadvertently moved to 20 and Sys 4 Hyd left in Aux, would the flaps transition once batt switch was engaged or is that not possible until the APU is selected on? Verifying positions with the checklist after the battery was turned on left me curious. Thank you again for such amazing videos!!!
Great clip, Skipper. I am sure the junior colleagues appreciate your selfless attitude. the APU has a door that opens before it starts and I believe it remains open whilst the APU is operational. Kindly talk me through APU operations during the flight because thinking that the open door might be ripped off during the flight always puzzles me.
Normally the APU will be shut down before flight - the door will close.
- the generators on the en gines will take over the electricity supply
The APU door is an inward opening flap. So there would be no risk of it being „ripped off“. However, on 747-100 an -200, this door even had a scoop which was designed to catch the air for better start up of the APU during flight. It was discarded later from production and removed from planes already flying with it for drag reasons, because it was deemed to be unnecessary to start the APU during flight at all.
Very informative. Thank you Captain Obet.
As mentioned, the door opens inwards. Even so, the door opening is reduced when the aircraft is in the air (if the APU is still running).
This must be the best job in the world!!
Nice one 👍
Good. Now, where do I find one to power up? Back to aerowinx 747 sim I guess... 😞
Super video Sir. Later
AWESOME
The '47 is still a favorite ship. I'm curious, though. The APU is a turbine engine, much like the main engines but smaller. When starting the APU, is the fuel management automatically handled (once the turbine has spooled up to ~21% N2)?. In contrast, when starting one of the main engines, as it gets cart or bleed air, you monitor the N2 rpm's before introducing fuel, manually. Always interesting to see cockpit video. Thanks and safe travels.
Hello Captain, I would like to know if learning to fly is self funded or funded by the company to train you. How did you get into Cathay Pacific? I would like to hear your story, which is worth a video
Why is it getting noisy once the airplane is “alive”? Is it the AC starting to operate? I always thought it was the APU that made the most noise up until the engines are turned on. And great video of course!
@@finn-lub the Air conditioning packs came on and airflow started. The camera is a bit sensitive and the sound is a it louder than actual.
just a silly question, Capt: so the aircraft is always powered up by the mechanics before the pilots come on board? for each flight?
@@TheFurreid in general -yes
Go Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 🇿🇼
when you start the APU, which I understand is a mini jet engine, an you get a hot start? I notice you were not monitoring any instruments when you started the APU...
You can go to the status page and watch the apu spool up. But nothing to monitor
Thanks for showing us how to wake the Queen.
👍
what happens if the gear lever is up...?
The plane falls on its nose, but that may depend on the weight on the nose and whether the nosewheels are chocked. Usually the weight on the main gear is suffient to prevent them retracting. Hydraulics are required for retraction, of course. This applies to the 747-400. The 747-8 should have logic to prevent this. The main gear doors on the 747-400 will drop (open) and may injure personnel.
@@ImperrfectStranger Very detailed response, is that from the manual?
Landing gear down, that’s why u guys are sitting on the ground
